⚡️Back to black ⚡️This Night Rider is on its way out to its owner today, really loving the classic look without any stone or appliqué, just letting the leather and hardware speak for itself. Also made with an extra long strap to be worn across the body. Thanks for your order @arcanedelve 🖤🖤 (at Auckland, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/COUAO59sFXk/?igshid=ex2v9rq7f7t8

I expanded the western stitch detail on this bag and carried it through to gusset and was really happy with how this turned out. I’m always trying to find ways to add even more detail into each bag to make each piece truly individual. Also made with a matching complimentary lighter case to complete the set⚡️🌺⚡️ (at Auckland, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNeX5X0sOhA/?igshid=eut1irwsfgrs

Since working in the NZ fashion industry for over a decade now I’ve noticed that my co-workers would tend to fit into either one of two groups, those who were younger and fairly new to the NZ made fashion industry, and those who were quite a bit older who would talk to me about the “good old days” of the industry and how “everything changed in the 80’s”. It became evident that my older colleagues had lived through much more productive times in the past and had all struggled to survive the enormous and rapid changes within the manufacturing industry since the late 1980’s. These changes are commonly referred to as the era of “Rogernomics” coined after the dramatic and incredibly swift changes made to the NZ economy implemented by the Minister of Finance at the time, Roger Douglas. Those changes happened overnight, on the 1st April 1987. Taxes on imports were taken off completely, and many state supported industries lost the entirety of their funding and protection by government. The manufacturing industry took a massive and permanent hit and it has never returned to its former glory. Approximately 76,000 manufacturing jobs were lost between 1987 and 1992. Prior to this economic restructure, New Zealand had a booming manufacturing industry; we made our own clothes, our own shoes, our own trademark woolen blankets, our own pottery, most of our common household goods were all made in Nz. These relics of our prior manufacturing independence are now coveted in high end second hand shops all over the country, tokens of our ability to create almost anything we put our mind to here in gods own country. One friend who was around at the time told me “Everyone wanted to wear a pair of levi’s jeans, but no one could afford them due to the high tariffs. So everyone wore the same made in New Zealand jeans. This went for the shoes and the clothes, everyone wore the same pair of shoes. So in a way, when the tariffs were lifted it was exciting, kiwis could now wear internationally made fashion, but within a few years, all the factories started closing down. Everything changed, no one could compete with the new cheaper prices due to tax reduced importing...(continued in comments) (at Auckland, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3xxikmJX9W/?igshid=1gt25dh4uv5ur

The process of creating products from concept through to final design; it begins with pattern drafting then creating the pattern pieces, selecting the right leather (colour, thickness, tanning method and animal) hardware selection, cutting, prep and lastly the sewing! It all takes a long time. My patience with this craft is one of the things others comment about most often when they see my work first hand. The hours of careful thought out steps taken, each action planned in deliberate succession. It’s all worth it when a product comes together to create a piece I can happily put my name to and a ten year warranty behind. Then to be able to release something into the world to be loved and worn forever is a great feeling 🙌 This image is me sewing the last stage of the midnight rider bag on my walking foot post machine, making sure to sew the stitch line super straight 👌 Photography by @storiesbybianca (at Auckland, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz4vhwHJOVS/?igshid=1tu1vq8t06agh
