okay, so important headcanon on the nature of dhampirs!

i’ve talked about it a bunch to partners (including @anxietyfought, @lambloved, and @connwcller) before, but leggo. 

the nature of dhampirs is closer to that of immortal children than it is to any other sort of vampire. immortal children are impossible not to love, and extremely endearing to the point where covens fought to their last member to protect them. it’s a sort of defense mechanism that they cannot control or turn off in any way, shape, or form. it’s a additional power in their arsenal, as opposed to adult vampires’ strength, speed, marble skin, ect.

dhampirs are like this, to a lesser extreme.  

dhampirs are naturally overwhelmingly charming. people want to protect and love them upon their first meeting, subconsciously, even if it goes against what they logically believe to be true. for some, who are aware of what what dhampirs are and what powers they might possess, like billy or alister, it makes them hate dhampirs more because they don’t want to hate them. 

because of this overwhelming charm, emotions surrounding them are much stronger than they would be if they were human. bella immediately loved and cared for her daughter, and would have even if renesmee were entirely human. but the fact that renesmee is a dhampir enhances bella’s feelings all the more. it explains the visceral reaction bella has to her daughter’s nickname. bella would be protective of a human daughter, but renesmee’s dhampir nature, alongside bella’s status as a newborn, make that need to protect renesmee, even from a threat as minor as a nickname, all the more intense. 

the nature of dhampirs is also why so many immediately took to renesmee. she had entire covens wrapped around her finger. now renesmee is normally a very sweet, caring girl who genuinely wants the best for others, so that does have something to do with how quickly people care about her, but it doesn’t explain how many vampires were willing to lay their lives down for her. even the romanian coven, although they never let her touch them, falls for renesmee immediately. aro is intensely curious about renesmee from the second he lays eyes on her, although before then we can assume his goal was to destroy the cullen coven and keep the leftovers. 

nahuel is taken to by the cullens and the vampires around him as quickly as renesmee was. although he’s much shyer around people, everyone welcomes him into the fold without question.

even dhampirs are not immune to the effect dhampirs have on people. nahuel and renesmee are both immediately curious about each other. while renesmee would love nahuel regardless, she is overwhelmingly protective about him and loves to spend every waking moment with him.

in most cases, to know a dhampir is to love a dhampir.
