How to knock an arrow

If you are learning archery or bow hunting then you would probably know that nocking an arrow is the 2nd step of archery. Some of you will think, nocking an arrow is so easy and why I am writing all these! But you would be amazed to know that some experienced archers struggle sometimes beside the beginners with this basic process. In this article, I am going to talk about how to get the arrow from a quiver and correctly set onto the bowstring.

The nocking point and the nock locator

Before I start, I would like to make you familiar with some words used in archery. Different archers use these words in different ways. I am writing this to make you better understand the post.

When someone put an arrow on the string, that’s called “nocking the arrow”.

A nock locator or a string nock is a small piece of metal attached to the bowstring so that one can set a nocking point on the bow.

When you set the nocking point on your bow and set the nock locator, then you will be able to attach your arrows at the same place every single time you shoot an arrow. Success and accuracy in archery depend on when you in the same way and from the same place.

Setting the nocking point is quite difficult. When you are using a rented bow in a shooting range, the range will set a nocking point on the bowstring for you. That’s a great help to you surely. For the beginners, they also use a rubbery thing which is called finger saver on the nock point. It helps to grip the arrow on the nocking point better.

Nocking the arrow

I hope you have practiced your stance very well and now you are kind of natural at this. Now you are ready to get an arrow. Now let’s follow the following steps:

You have to hold the arrow shaft close to the nock that is behind the vanes

Put the arrow shaft on the arrow rest

Rotate the shaft till the indexing vane pointed in the right direction. For recurve bow, the indexing vane should be pointing away from the riser. So we can say, rotate the shaft until the indexing vane comes between your body and riser. If you are a compound bow user then you will index the arrow directly depending on the arrow rest installed on your bow.

When the indexing vane is rightly oriented, snap the nock of the arrow onto the bowstring under the nock locator.

 If you are using a compound bow, then, when you are nocking an arrow on a bowstring with a D-Loop, the knock on the shaft goes between the upper and lower knot of the D-Loop. If there is a gap left after the arrow is snapped into position, the nock on the arrow shaft should be pushed toward the top of the D-Loop.

Safety Tips

When you are in a shooting range and you drop an arrow don’t try to pick it up. Even if an arrow falls from your hand on your feet don’t bend and try to pick it. Call the staff and he will pick it up for you. Most archery ranges have this kind of rules. They make this safety rule to keep you safe and they are very strict about this.

If you are confused about nocking the arrow or any other procedure then just stop and ask for help to any staff or experts around you. They would love to help you.

Keep an eye out for your center serving. On your bowstring, you'll see that there's some extra material right in the middle of the string, right around where the nock/finger saver is located. Over time, this material can fray or tatter, and that may mean it's time for a new bowstring.

 If you feel a bit awkward when nocking an arrow, don’t be upset. Most of the beginner archers take time to get perfection. The truth is every archer will develop their own skill or method of nocking the arrow. There is no particular rule to do this easily at the beginning. So keep calm and practice more and always follow the safety tips.

It seems like again someone is inspired by the movie “Hunger Games” and decided to take archery as a hobby! So you have been struck by the archery arrow and started growing interest in archery but don’t know from where and how to get started. In this article, we are going to know about how to get started with archery. So, let’s go and start with the basics.

What is archery

When you are going to start something new, you should have some knowledge about that thing. Archery is a skill of using a bow to shoot arrows to the targets. In the ancient period, archery was a form of combat and equipment of hunting down animals. But in modern times archery is a very famous sport. It’s famous also in the Olympics.

Things you need to do to get started Find a good club and coach You can find a good archery club around you. Because in a good club you will find a lot of opportunities to learn archery. There are experienced coaches in those clubs who can teach you and train you about archery. If there is no club available but you still want to continue, then just buy a bow and arrows and start practicing in your garden. But be careful that you don’t hurt anyone.

Rent your equipment

Most of the archery club let their beginner member use their bow for free or in a small rent. There are two sides to it. One is the experts can advise you about which bow suits you the most. After practicing with that you can buy your own gear. 

On the other side, if you buy your own bow at first, you will get comfortable with your bow because you are practicing with it.

Choosing the right bow

There are mainly two types of bow, recurve bow and compound bow. Choosing one of them depends on what you really want to do after getting into archery. To choose between them, you need to know what they are and what they really do.

Comparison between the compound and recurve bow

If you want to be an archer like you see in the movies or if you dream of getting a gold medal in Olympics, then recurve bow is a perfect choice. Only these bows are allowed in the Olympics. The reason behind it is that recurve bow is less powerful than compound bows and because of it the ability of an archer fully comes out by recurve bows.

Recurve bows are cheaper in cost. You can fire quickly and easily by it and it is also easy to maintain and carry. All these things make it a great choice for beginners.

On the other side, if you want to be more accurate and get more power from your bow, then compound bows are the best.

After drawing with compound bows, archers get time to measure distance, wind resistance etc. Arrows will fly faster and further because compound bow will store and release more kinetic energy. These features make compound bows a great choice for the bow hunters.

A bow is nothing without the arrows. So, let’s take a look at the three types of archers to help you choose:

Aluminum arrows

Mainly shoot from recurve bows and great for beginners. Carbon arrows Mainly shoot from the compound bows and very famous to the hunters.

Wood arrows

These wood arrows are so wonderful that you would want to learn how to make it for yourself. These are the original arrows and are being used since ancient times. These arrows are for the recurve bows.

Try to find an archery range around you. You can practice your target there and improve your skill. You can also do it indoors if there’s an indoor club near you. How to draw a compound bow

Drawing a compound bow is really a fun part. When you are ready with aligning your feet and body, gripping the bow, knocking the arrow and positioning your release aid only when you are ready to learn about the fun part, drawing a bow. But before learning to draw a compound bow, be careful about the weight. Don’t try to draw a bow that is too heavy for you. In this writing, I will try to help with some information about ‘how to draw a compound bow’.

Why it is so important

When someone pulls the bowstring back, that’s called the draw. It’s the 6th step of shooting an arrow and also the most active and heavy part of the shooting sequence. Shooting the correct draw weight lets you make perfect shots, saves you from injury and increase your chance of success. All these reasons make the draw the most important part of shooting.

The basic movement 

When you are ready with the earlier steps means, getting your stance right, nocked the arrow, grasped the bowstring, readied your bow hand and raised your bow arm, then comes the draw. Draw in and of itself, the draw seems easy, just bring the bowstring backward, towards the side of your face.

It sounds easy, right? The hidden things are not, trust me! Whether you are drawing a recurve bow or a compound bow, you need to keep these things in

your head:

Keep your head straight and up. You may sometime have the tendency to bring the head back or away from the bowstring or get closer to the bowstring. Never look at the target and keep your head still when you draw the string close to your face.

Keep calm and let your shoulders be relaxed. Keep them as low as possible that means in a good form.

Try to use your back because a good draw uses your back and arms as well. When you are getting into a full draw, try it by pressing your both shoulder blades closer and together. Do it in a very smooth motion so that the bow doesn’t move from its position.

 Always keep your wrist flat. You have to keep your drawing hand straight as much possible. When you are at full draw, keep a straight line from your wrist to your elbow.

Always keep the string at the middle lined up with the bow. Don’t move it right or left.

Take stock at the time of full draw. Your chest should face the target perpendicularly; index finger should be near to the corner of your mouth, the elbow of the draw hand should be right behind the arrow.

Try to complete the draw in a single continuous smooth motion.

Looks like a lot, right? Yes, it is! People get trained for long to do it perfectly.

Draw with a compound bow

Holles Wilbur Allen, Jr., the man who created the compound bow, was really a genius. Draw with a compound bow is a little complicated. At the beginner level archers, that’s why try to avoid it. There is a complicated levering system in a compound bow which increases the draw weight. But the amazing fact is, when you make a full draw, it will feel easy and light. This feeling is called “the valley”. So, you can aim for a long time and you will not feel the full draw weight of the bow.

But if you make a full draw and then need to come back, return the bow carefully and slowly because you will experience a sudden increase in draw weight. So be careful about that feeling so that you don’t lose control of the bowstring and misfire or dry fire.

If you have done this successfully, then congratulations, you have done the hardest part of shooting with a compound bow sequence. And till then you would probably gather something in your bag.
