5 recommendations for the global community to improve the lives of people with Down syndrome by addressing stereotypes and misconceptions.
Tumblr media
The international community, led by the United Nations, can continue to improve the lives of people with Down syndrome by addressing stereotypes and misconceptions. Here are five recommendations for the global community:
Work with people with Down syndrome and their representative organizations to raise awareness about Down syndrome, in line with Article 8 of CRPD. In particular, there is a need in many countries to raise understanding of the cause of Down syndrome so that families are not faced with discrimination and shame arising from a false belief that they or their ancestors in some way caused the genetic variation.
Adopt best practices in life contexts through the implementation of evidence-informed guidelines, such as Down Syndrome International’s International Guidelines for the Education of Learners with Down Syndrome.
Provide opportunities for people with Down syndrome to take part in projects, advocacy campaigns and events. Down Syndrome International, in collaboration with Inclusion International, has developed guidelines to assist organizations with inclusive participation.
Provide employment opportunities for people with Down syndrome. Employers, from small organizations to large corporations to civil society groups, need to make workplaces accessible and welcoming.
Use easy-to-understand communication options for all information, ensuring accessibility for people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities, as well as for people with limited literacy or those who are reading in a different language, in line with General Assembly resolution 77/240, adopted on 16 December 2022.
All people deserve the opportunity to live life to the fullest. For people with Down syndrome to do so, it is past time to dispense with the myths and stereotypes that for too long have led to low expectations and diminished quality of life.

people not realizing the extreme rarity of captive walruses is k i l l i n g me dear god. Just any old zoo does not have them! They are hard to transport, hard to care for, and hardly ever successfully breed in captivity so zoos only get them when an injured or orphaned individual gets picked up by a rescue in the arctic and is deemed unreleasable. That’s not a frequent occurrence! This isn’t a tiger king situation with backyard breeders all over the place!

And there it is. There is the point I'm trying to get at. They will never. NEVER investigate the systematic harm against Palestinian women and girls because they're not even seen to be worthy of worry or outrage in the NYT's eyes. We have been screaming about sexual abuse against Palestinians the past 75 years and no one gave a damn. It happens all the time to our girls and women, but no one cared enough to investigate until now.

Boycott Israeli Dates this Ramadan, from Call 2 Action Now, 28/Feb/2024: (caption under images)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This Ramadan, don’t break your fast with an Israeli date. Stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Israel’s genocidal assault on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip has now killed tens of thousands. Palestinians, facing down Israel’s catastrophic violence, call on us to boycott Israeli products in solidarity with their struggle for freedom.
Follow this quick guide to boycotting Israeli dates:
• Always check the label when buying dates. Don’t buy dates that are produced or packaged in Israel or its West Bank settlements. If no country of origin can be found on the box, check the retailer’s website.
• One of Israel’s largest exporters is called Hadiklaim. It sells dates in supermarkets under these names: King Solomon, Jordan River and Jordan River Bio-Top, as well as under the labels of supermarket chains. Check the box carefully, if the dates were “exported by Hadiklaim” – don’t buy them.
• Avoid these companies: Mehadrin, MTex, Edom, Carmel Agrexco, and Arava
#checkthelabel is not enough. Israel has been caught labelling their dates as ‘produce of Palestine’. Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, M&S, Morrison, Aldi, Lidl and Asda package Israeli dates under their own labels!
Buy dates from Zaytoun, Alard, Yaffa, and Holy Land Date all support Palestinian Farmers. If you cannot get hold of these brands then buy dates from Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, UAE and Algeria.

i genuinely don't think it matters if avery was breaking ToS or not. a website where ToS is only applied to posts that get staff's attention and where terfs consistently organize to get trans women's posts brought to staff's attention is de facto a website where the rules only apply to trans women. the purpose of a system is what it does and all that innit

Before you reblog that bullshit article about Sacheen Littlefeather
Please know it was written by J. Keeler, a notoriously ghoulish person who is obsessed with things like blood quantum, and is also especially racist towards Black Natives and Black people in general. Keeler has been widely denounced by NDN Twitter, but it seems that hasn't spread over to Tumblr yet because I've seen that article come up on my dash twice now.
She does her own "research" that has been faulty time and again, with zero apologies for the damage she's done. Do not trust a single word she says.
Read these articles instead:
And also, here's a relevant Twitter thread:

In relation to the 'news' surrounding Sacheen Littlefeather, i'm really going to need non natives to kinda sit back on this one. I mean it. It gets exhausting having to repeatedly explain ideas of blood quantum and it's catastrophic effects on indigenous communities to allies that're strangely gun-ho about attacking someone who may or may not be Native.
CONTEXT ; Jacqueline Keeler, for those who are uninitiated, is a notorious 'pretendian hunter' and authored a list of 'confirmed pretendians' that erroneously implicated several people as race fakers when that was flat out not the case. This was most famously the case with Ben Nighthorse Campbell ( who mind you, isn't a good person, but that doesn't matter here ), where she claimed that he had no Cheyenne ancestry despite him being a registered tribal citzen of the Northern Cheyenne nation. At no point did she confer with tribal officials to confirm her belief.
She is the author of the piece that is now implicating Sacheen as a race faker, and that alone should be a red flag to people. The whole piece leans on the idea that Sacheen's sisters, Rosalind and Trudy, always knew that Sacheen was lying and spent years and years and years holding back from speaking out out of the belief that Sacheen's career would fizzle out eventually.
If they always knew, then why did Rosalind flat out say on twitter that she found out recently FROM Jacqueline Keeler herself that they aren't Native?

Jacqueline should not, in my opinion, be trusted to speak on issues of 'real native status'. Anyone who values mindlessly rooting out 'pretendians' over doing community work of real merit isn't worth giving the time of day to. Her evidence for most things is flimsy and should always be taken with a HEFTY grain of salt.
I need everyone to understand that obsessing over 'pretendians' and blood quantum and who has a right to claim nativeness is a fool's errand. Blood quantum as a concept is a tool of colonization, and is something we're still trying to shake off to this day. Smaller Native communities are losing their land rights and tribal sovereignty because of blood quantum stipulations put out by the government. At some point, there may be no one with a large enough quantum to claim tribal affiliation for these small bands, despite thriving communities still existing.
So, imagine our frustration at non natives pointing at people and saying 'lol I bet you're only 0.1% native, shut up' like that's some kind've all powerful gotcha. It displays a profound lack of understanding for our experiences and how we define nativeness. Please try and get that blood quantum is an issue that we as a community debate about all the time and that it's just.. something that's best left to those it effects. You aren't helping any indigenous people by perpetuating this shit.
I don't know what Sacheen's claim to Nativeness really is. I do not trust Jacqueline's word as far as I can throw it, which isn't very far. Her sisters openly hate her and seem to not know how to get their story straight. This all conveniently comes forward after her passing, so she couldn't defend or explain herself if she wanted to, and all of it feels very suspicious to me. I don't know what Sacheen's claim to Nativeness really is, and yanno what, I don't care. At the end of the god damn day, this sorta thing is not my business and it's not your business either.

A lot of pretendian discourse online has made non-Native people especially feel like they're allowed to accuse any Native person they don't like of being a faker or pretendian and I can't believe how many Native people are totally okay with that and actually ENCOURAGE IT. Like we've got so called leftists going around picking apart any random Native person's social media to find anything that could be even slightly inconsistent to make a callout post about them supposedly being a faker and for what? Who does that help? What purpose does that serve except to terrify Native people into hiding and never talking about our experiences online?

the way j*cquelin k**ler pivoted from just doing “genealogy” to like dna tests (which like how tf would she even get her hands on those, she’s such a fucking grifter) to prove that someone is ndn enough for her is absolutely insane like you’re going to use dna tests (which are notoriously unreliable in determining where anyone’s ancestors come from) and blood quantum, two tools of colonizers, to decide if someone is ndn enough? those are your diagnostic tools? no fucking way

Beware of anyone advocating that blood quantum is a good thing. Because they are 100% using it to rationalize overturning the ICWA. That children who are "lesser" deserve to be bought & sold. BQ is also a part of eugenicist philosophy, as exampled. As well as anyone who uses the word 'pretendian' - they are not to be trusted. They are purposely stirring up divisiveness to seem righteous & placing Native youth in danger in the process.
