Leigh Cook Group Tutorial - 22nd October 2018
FDC - Live Brief
Themes of Entrapment - Using screen printing over Digital?
Overlay of plastic and dead fish is working well
3D scanning technique is something to pursue (Perhaps think of how this could come into sampling)
Remember to not get carried away with 3d printing, use motifs generated by 3d scanning if printing fails
Perhaps look at David Salle and his use of Collage
Start to experiment now - start to play with materials and begin to sample fabrics once visual research is completed - composition
General Feedback
Begin to think about the scale and placement of work/sampling
Start to source fabrics which you could begin to experiment with.
Think about 5 Main pieces of imagery that best describe work, These will provide key points of reference within the project.
Leigh will enquire the process of translating works into fashion based outcomes.

Sketchbook pages which document the development of research for my project. This is a follow up to the research processes that I have developed during the SDC Colour and Research project during the first 3 weeks of the term. By presenting and analysing the issues that are prevalent in which the world of fashion and science I have successfully generated a wide range of inspirational sources which would be crucial in the development of my own work. Ranging from plastic in fashion to environmental imagery from science and documentary footage, my research took me on a journey which delved into the depths of history, looking into the symbolism of vanitas painting and the cabinets of curiosity and the mysteries they hold to contemporary activism seen within Haute Couture.

Initial Sketchbook pages which document the collection of newspaper articles over the summer which focus on environmental issues. This has sparked the development of research for my project, Exploring a topic which is very prevalent in today’s climate of environmental uncertainty.

FDC Brief (Live Project) - Being approached by the FDC over Instagram over the summer I have decided to take part in their “Young Designer of the Year” Awards. Above illustrates the brief that has been given out and illustrates the guidelines that I must follow. Presentation Feedback
I believe that the presentation that I completed accurately reflected where I am currently at both within my work and mentally as a person. It was clear that I was able to create in-depth contextual referencing, presenting key ideas and concepts that reflected themes of deep thinking. However, there were a few issues that were arisen once my presentation was completed. Although I had made a keen effort to begin to refine and condense my work to look deeper into my referencing. However, I ended up running over time and this was because I had crammed in too much information in a short period of time. It was noted that this would have effected an assessed piece of work and that in future it is something I am going to have to consider when preparing presentations. However, They were impressed with the deep thinking and analysis that went into the work I had produced over the 3 week period and it was suggested that the project be presented in a clean and clear publication.
I need to begin to accept when enough is enough and start to edit my work so that I am only presenting THE KEY POINTS. Additionally, although I had explored the project as a research and concept project, many thought it was a shame that I lost my own hand of drawing and sampling and focused on the work of others. However, I felt as if at this point it was necessary to be able continue these themes and concepts in a new project driven by self exploration through drawing, painting, photography and sampling. Feedback was also given on post-it notes in the forms of critical statements and questions -
- “It would be interesting yo see the colours you have referenced within your work in a finalised colour palette?”
- “You have some amazing research, your drawings are incredible but its time to really condense your ideas and your work even more to give it the credit it deserves”
- “In comparison to your previous practice, did this process of in-depth research help you feel more comfortable when it came sampling?”
- “Enlarge some of your inspiration so we can understand the textural elements too, your project was really interesting and really suited you”
- “How would you use the images on the body? would you use the 3D element through your collages within your sampling?”
-“Have you ever considered exploring embroidery in your printed samples?”
- “Do you feel you had enough time to look into each “branch” of your work?”
- “All your Ideas have really shown through all your work is relative and links just try to pick key points to each so there isn’t too much information?”
- “Do you see your prints as fashion prints” “how will your prints be created screen - Large scale - Repeat?”
- “ Do you think the use of 3D collage approach to drawing has influenced you in materials and development?”
- “ Mind Map is a really good way to show your ideas BUT try not to get distracted. - look into rust dyeing”
These elements risen by my peers are fascinating viewpoints that will allow me to take on constructive criticism. By thinking about these statements, I can begin to develop and refine pieces of work, condensing my ideas once again in order to remember the KEY POINTS. In the next part of the unit, I want to respond to this 3 week project by producing practical pieces of work through drawing, painting, photography and collage which will inform potential sampling ideas.

After my Crit with leigh on the 1st of October 2018, I spent the rest of the week preparing for my presentation using the technique that leigh suggested. By using a “crime scene investigation’ style approach to mind-mapping I was able to explore a number of crucial research topics that lead me to establish key themes that I have looked at in the last 3 weeks. These included responses to literary quotations from “Convergence of the twain” and “ghostly galleons”, refined concepts such as “Eroded Elegance” and scientific discovery from “The science of Rust” to “Sonar Technology. Through producing these concepts, I was able to identify the following themes :
- Decayed Decadence -Natural Rebellion- Consumed Corruption - Eroded Elegance -  Corrosion Fatigue - Rust Harvest - Rusted imitation - Surface Failure - Engulfed Suffocation - Passage of Time - Historical Fragments
These themes, established by the exploration of narratives are key points that I wish to delve into during the presentation, allowing the viewers to see into the inner workings of how I produce ideas and concepts from referenced imagery.
