I've started going into a real, touching grass activism in my community since January that deals with matters locally all the way up to nationally and one thing it has really taught me is how much the internet views entertainment as activism versus real, concrete activism.

Art is incredibly powerful & important but the act alone of consuming it is not necessarily (and 99% of the time definitely isn't) a form of activism.

One of the reasons I started getting involved is I learned that there is no number of FD Signifier or Kat Blaque video essays I can watch that is going to make change. I've learned a lot from them, I've gained new perspectives, knowledge and ways of thinking but that in and of itself isn't actually doing anything, I'm just watching entertainment I find fulfilling.

All this rambling to say, I do think maybe in some way you could use D&D to do activism such as starting D&D activities for children as after school programs or as ways to help build community though I do think it'd be better to use other systems for a number of reasons but that goes down a different tangent.

But the act of trying to make D&D transformative at the end of the day is somebody making their form of media consumption tailored to them and nothing else really changes. WotC still got your money, you feel better about what you do and it's just a very lib way of dealing with "activism" by still keeping it within the confines of consumption. I think all of this is fine on it's own as your way to engage in entertainment you like. And I do think it's good to do that for your own fun.

When I play Eat The Reich and people are playing queer vampires murdering nazis, that doesn't move the needle any further to stopping the right wing rise across the globe, but it's damn fun and it's good to do things that are fun and they can just be that without trying to make it more than it is.

Anyway, please do something in your community, I can't express how much it helps my mental health to feel like I am working towards making the world better instead of just scrolling and seeing how much worse it's getting, especially when I see success and meet new people. It also doubly doesn't put that pressure on my leisure activities to be my way of fighting back against the man because I made my half-elf bisexual. I'm not trying to dismiss how powerful these experiences can be but I see way too much being framed as "activism" by people who want to feel like they are doing something just because they have progressive feelings on subjects.

One of the funny types of person I sometimes run into on here is the person who really believes in the transformative power of play to the extent where they will begin to frame the act of playing D&D in a way that doesn't agree with the text of the game as a way of sticking it to WotC (to paraphrase @sirobvious, "playing D&D wrong as a form of activism"). This is of course already laughable in the sense that playing Wizards of the Coast's game, even in a transformative way, doesn't exactly do anything to really show it to Wizards of the Coast (and like even supposedly "anticapitalist" transformative works based on D&D will just get absorbed into the larger D&D fandom and just end up feeding into the WotC ecosystem), but also, very importantly, it is primarily a game and even though it's a game some versions of which I happen to like I don't think playing D&D in a transformative way is a very good replacement for actual political work and activism. Like, I think you're better off joining a communist party rather than playing D&D if you want to enact political change in the society around you.

So anyway playing D&D isn't a replacement for activism, that much should be obvious, but I feel an underappreciated part of it is the fact that there seems to be already a presupposed admission that you need to play D&D transformatively for it to count as properly anticapitalist. As if the text itself was not exactly accommodating to those themes. Which just makes it funnier. Like people on tumblr will be like "you believe in Marxism? that pales in effectiveness to my strategy. playing D&D" and then not play D&D.
