pre canon, whenever Pony got overwhelmed or too emotional or he was just done with the gang, he ran. He would walk (sometimes stumble) out the door and just start running down the street wherever he could go to just get away. Darry and Soda hated this cause he could be gone for five minutes and then come back, or he could be gone for hours before he came back, cooled off.

However it was so much better than post canon.

The first time Pony got overwhelmed from just daily life, he made a move towards the door to run but everything came back to him in that moment in perfect clarity.

Last time he'd ran, two of his best friends had died because of his pettiness. Last time he'd ran, everything had crumbled around him.

He had stumbled away from the door, tripped into a closet somewhere in the house, and curled himself up and just sat there with the door closed.

Some people didn't like the tight spaces, but compared to big drafty open areas like the church where fire could spread anything could get in, he would take the secure, closed area where he knew he couldn't hurt anybody ever, maybe himself but that didn't matter.

Darry and Soda hated this even more because it reminded them of all the little things they had lost about their little brother. He didn't get angry anymore and storm out of the house, he just walked quietly away and disappeared into their room. Soda tried to talk him out of the closet once, before Pony was ready to get out, but anything Soda said seemed to go right over his head, Pony barely realizing there was somebody talking to him, too caught up in his own head to acknowledged Soda trying to comfort him.

It was the little things like this that truly punched everybody in the gut as they realized.

Pony wasn't who he used to be, and he never would be again.

Apocalypse au ponyboy but its heavy on my headcanons!! Yay!!

Ponyboys middle name in this au is Halsey.

At some point, pony started going by his middle name Halsey (this is inspired by what S.E hinton said one time about pony going by his middle name later in life, except in this au he chooses his middle name far sooner in life. The apocalypse really messed with him, Hes a lot more serious now. Hes incredibly good with weapons and a skilled fighter. He carries with him a baseball bat and a gun (which is almost never touched, he brings it out when absolutely needed, very rare). He always wears a very serious cold expression. He doesn't talk much anymore. He hasn't let go of his older hobbies, even if he doesn't have much time for writing and drawing. He keeps a notebook and book with him and when he can, takes time to himself to draw and read (mostly in secret)

His hair is grown out, to his shoulders and he bleaches it when he can. He has a few scars. He is very fast and quiet, which leads him to being one of the main hunters of the group. Hes very good at going undetected.

He definitely carries a pack of cigarettes around with him because of course he does

Halsey also has chronic eye bags. He does NOT sleep.

Halsey has a pet cat that follows him named Hitch.. shes a very fiesty calico cat. She doesn't like almost anyone but shes ATTACHED to Halsey. She sits on his shoulder sometimes

ponyboy was never close with his parents. yeah, he loved them and cares about them, but they weren’t close. he couldn’t name mama’s favorite flower off the top of his head like soda, or the year papa graduated like darry. he knew them, but he didn’t know them like darry and sodapop.
