Art Project #1: Selections from Human Achievement archive
“Finger of God”
I started this project by first deciding to create a photo archive from important moments in human history. The photos are both literal and symbolical depending on the event or time period. The series is in rough order of events that depict what I felt could be distilled to ten photos. This was a tough project in trying to decide what I felt was a “humanities top-10 list” or “greatest hits.” I still feel conflicted as to the ones I chose as there are so many significant moments that I chose not to use. In the end I decided that I needed to make this for a more general audience, not just for me.
To contrast the achievements of humanity I selected the focal point of the fresco, “The Creation of Adam” by Italian artist Michelangelo. The purpose of this painting was to remind man that he was created in gods image and from this simple touch came the spark of life. While I do not personally subscribe to this mode of thinking I think it shows how far we have come from this literal and figurative point in history. Perhaps it was humanities desire to be closer to god that spurred modern innovation and rapid social evolution, or perhaps “god” was simply another of mans greatest inventions used to help bring order to chaos in absence of a fundamental understanding of the universe.
The movement through time in this series is an obvious record of some of mans accomplishments, however, it is my opinion that mans accelerating evolution is a far more dynamic, dystopian, hopeful, virtual, and violent change than anything outlined in the books of Genesis. It is the meeting of the new and the old that I think we can appreciate how far we have come and far we intend to go.
I did have far higher hopes for this project but due to my lack of photoshop skills this is the best version of how I was able to translate this idea.

Although yes, this video is long, I wanted to portray how nowadays most if not all young women struggle with their image and how they portray themselves. Many of us despise posting a photo without any filter or factune, even if we have a full face of makeup on. This past year I actually deleted all of my social media simply because it was destroying me every day to see myself in the mirror and not be happy with what I saw becuase it wasn’t what social media or society in general would consider to be beautiful (or at least, that’s what I thought). I also used to wear a full face of makeup every day, which would take about an hour to do, so I would wake up extra early. From contouring, to over lining my lips a little too much (as I did in the video), to just putting on layers and layers until I felt hidden. Nowadays, I wear a little makeup as I can in order to push myself to accept my beauty and my wonderful body and face that god gave me. When I first heard Billie Eilish’s song “idontwannabeyouanymore”, it made me realize just how much we are all truly tied down by society’s standards of beauty and perfection, and how we should all stop hiding behind filters and makeup. This video simply puts all that I’ve experienced in the past year in a nutshell - feeling unworthy or not pretty unless I didn’t have makeup on, and not being brave enough to post a selfie unless I had some form of filter on it that would smooth my face out (even though now I realize my skin is perfectly fine). Overall, this video represents how I broke through my fear of being my natural self, and accept my beauty, becuase we are all perfectly imperfect, and that is what makes every one of us unique!

So this is the video concept I had about a shadowy type of figure looming over me while I’m drawing, trying to get something right but every time it closes in a little, I have to scribble out my work and start over. The shadow creature represents self-doubt which can sometimes feel like it’s so attached while I try to do a good job at anything. I feel like doubt looks like this, a dark little blobby, lethargic thing and one big feature I like about it is the way that aside from this little doubt monster, it’s a normal looking scene, with it, not so much. I also chose this recording because it got minimal reaction from the people around me which makes it feel more like it’s just in my head. Self-doubt really is nothing more than just something in your head, without it you’re free and even with it, barely anyone pays attention or sometimes even notices.

“Silence” My camera man stopped the recording a bit short of the one minute.  I’d planned to stare at you after the writing on the face.

Project #4: One Minute Live Performance
I know this is well past one minute but it didn’t feel complete when I cut it shorter. Marina Abramovic’s documentary was mind blowing and stretched my previously conceived notions of what art is and can be. Although she is most known for her radical displays, I was more influenced by her subtle performances like when she sat in a chair and gave blank stares to strangers. I hope I was able to adequately show the inspiration I gathered from her work.
The background music is a song I made a year or so ago called “Black Ice” and the footage is a blend of shots that I took myself using a tripod and phone as well as clips from Earl Sweatshirt’s “Grief” video. I would have recreated similar scenes to Earl’s with me as the subject but I think once you see the clips I borrowed it will be understandable how recreating these sentiments would have required an extensively larger amount of resources than I have access to.
If you like the music, please check my other stuff out as well:

Reading & Response #4
I wanted to combine my response to Roselee Goldberg’s A Hidden History and Marina Abramovic’s The Artist is Present because they each helped me make meaning of the other. While Goldberg’s piece is an analysis of the characteristics of performance art, Abramovic’s documentary is a demonstration of these characteristics. Even with both pieces stating that each moment of a performance act is a one of one, never to be captured exactly the same again, I think the essence of the difference in their view points lies within the areas and moments in which they are making their observations. Golberg seems to see performance art as a tool to challenge thought that it is concurrent with social change. A more historical approach is taken. On the other hand, Abramovic takes the aspects of human interaction and turns them into a “scientific experiment that reveals human nature” in the present. To her, performance art is omnipresent just as light is as a medium in Sean Cubitt’s piece. I tend to agree with her sentiments after seeing her demonstrations. Whether she is staring into the face of random strangers sitting across from her, meeting and leaving the love of her life on the great wall of China, cutting herself and whipping her back, etc., we can all relate to the emotions behind the actions even if not the actions themselves. She states that she is a mirror showing people to themselves and that was such a profound statement considering the dynamics of the reactions the audiences shared with her. We are all mediums simply through existing.

Vanishing and Becoming: Liquids
Looking at several of the examples of video art linked in this module gave me several ideas for themes and content after I began with next to none. This one started in my mind with just showing various clips and forms of water, and soon evolved to as many different types of liquids as I could think of: water, paint, oil, ink, milk, blood, and even storm clouds, lava and glacier ice — not all exactly liquid by definition, but I felt like they were close enough and perfectly fit the “mesmerizing” look I wanted.
The varied distances, along with some clips of controlled settings and others of chaos and destruction, became a play on light and color. By placing them all next to each other from clip to clip, they began to lose their singular context and become part of the others, which I saw fit into the theme of abstraction. Finding the perfect timing and length for each clip and sequence, both to fit the one-minute mark and the beat of the music, fit into duration, as did the varying movement speeds of each substance. All of them ending by moving in reverse and back to their starting points was my take on vanishing and becoming. I chose the Bauhaus song, Bela Lugosi’s Dead, somewhat randomly as it was on while I was thinking about the project, but while working on it, I found its effects and ambiance brought all the varied clips together perfectly, and gave the video a stronger rhythm and a darker edge.

Vanishing and Becoming
For this project response, I wanted to depict the idea of how ideas wander, vanish, and reappear throughout long nights or when you’re alone and just wandering your mind in an abstract way with the string lights and darkness. I believe the song also adds to it, because it is about a man daydreaming about his significant other, and how he sits around thinking all these random thoughts. Hope you enjoy!

I really enjoyed exploring the different effects within premiere and ended up enjoying the black and white, tint, and leave color effects the most. I love this because it is so different from the original works. The song is from Disney’s Cinderella (2015) “Pumpkin Pursuit.” The dancer is Sarah “Smac” McCreanor in Young & Beautiful. I enjoyed seeing how the different music could transform her amazing choreography!
