what *other things*?
lol I don't have any coherent thoughts or the time to delve into them at the moment. The Anti-Hero is just a fascinating study in her own demons and insecurities and fears. And with the added context of what was going on in her life at the time she wrote the album and shot the video, it bleeds right into what ends up being explored on TTPD. And like I said in the previous ask, I think the gender politics of it all is a telling theme (not only in the mv, but on Midnights as a whole and certainly on TTPD). And knowing what she was battling in her personal life at the time (or at least, having a rough idea of it), the theme of being exploited and misunderstood throughout her life and even at her own funeral by those who were supposed to love her is fascinating.
I did write a bit about the funeral scene awhile back though.
#Pouring out my heart to a stranger but I didn't pour the whiskey#Anonymous#also the faceless nameless unspoken of father vs the two sons anyway i can't articulate it lol#anti-hero mv

something i always think about is how in the "mine" music video and in the "anti-hero" song / music video, taylor envisions herself having a son (or sons). i don't think she's the type of person to NOT want a daughter or anything, but i just think it's interesting that in two different moments in her career (and in vastly very different contexts - one of romanticized longing and the other of self-loathing and existential dread), it's something that's popped up. it makes me think about how taylor is constantly alluding to a desire to protect future generations of girls while simultaneously mourning the various ways she was failed. i wonder if she feels more nervous about the prospect of raising a daughter in light of all that?
I wouldn't be able to answer that since I'm not in her head!
That being said, even though I'm not a parent, many of my friends do have daughters, and they've all expressed similar concerns about raising them and protecting them given all the pressures (and dangers) of being a woman in the world. It's at a fever pitch in today's environment. I couldn't tell you if Taylor specifically is worried about that, in so much as I'd hazard a guess that most women who are or are considering raising daughters at this point in time are concerned about that.
I don't necessarily think casting boys in her music videos is a glimpse into her psyche or anything (though it could be! Again, I'm not Taylor, I can't answer that) but if I'd have to guess, it might just have to do with the visual contrast on screen of her very girly self to the boys around her. And also, as she's grown older, she's delved into the gender politics of relationships (both romantic and otherwise) so it may have to do with the commentary on her career and existence uniquely tied to womanhood vs the ways in which it's exploited (thinking of Anti-Hero in this case, not Mine lol).
Like, taking Anti-Hero and the music video skit for instance, the image she conjures up there would be different altogether for a daughter living in her shadow, vs. the two feckless sons lol.

Run (original lyrics) // Run (Taylor’s Version) ◉: scrapped, ◉ : changed, ◉ : additions “(…) and it’s a song about sort of the escapism about falling in love and how you don’t really care what anyone else says when you feel this way, and you just want to run away with someone, and all the little secrets that you establish with this person—this secret world you create.” - Taylor on Run (x)

lmao every time Enchanted comes on it makes me think of the time the girls at the rink put their Taylor playlist on and I ended doing a spin right as the big note to the last chorus hit and it's on video 😂

"you are an expert at 'sorry' and keeping the lines blurry" is one of those lines that just flies by but is so insidiously disturbing

"in a world of boys he's a gentleman" is a very interesting lyric when you remember it was written about the first guy taylor dated who was around her age after two very questionable and tumultuous relationships with much older men

ttpd prologue - taylor swift
#i could write essays about this exact bit#i probably have#this is like the very condensed cliff notes of the story that drives it all#like in this one stanza you see the hopes and dreams and love and the way it all falls apart#it's actually so deeply poignant and heartbreaking#ANYWAY

shuffle tonight went from komh to peace and it made me sick to my stomach that she wrote a whole song about how he was everything to her only to a few years down the line write a song asking if she could do anything to be enough for him. needless to say i’m taking a break from shuffle lol
It's sad when relationships start breaking down and the person who brought you comfort becomes the person causing you pain! 😩 'Tis the human condition and all that and so painfully normal. But what a gift that Taylor can put all of these ranges of experiences into words. Obviously it's terrible to go through some of these things in the moment, but it's a privilege as a fan (and just as like, a human connecting to other humans) to follow along. And I don't mean that in a voyeuristic way, but in the sense that you're a witness to the growth and determination and survival throughout these stories. (Whether it's Taylor's music or another writer's novels or a director's films etc.) Art really does do that for us all. 🫶
(Also my semi-regular soapbox that on its own, Peace isn't a sad song, it's a tender and vulnerable exploration of one's insecurities in the face of major life decisions and can be seen as a wonderful expression of love to choose to give yourself to this person in spite of those fears. It's just that when the answer eventually shifts from "of course" to "no" that it goes from being sweet to devastating. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.)
Shuffle is indeed a menace sometimes lol.
