*The Manager nodded.*

“I know. It’s part of why I’m happy. I know you’re not very accustomed to performances without blood or screams in them, and I’m thankful you dialed it back. Even if I might have to teach you the Heimlich maneuver for next time someone chokes.”

*10:30 rolled around, and on the dot the performance started, not a second late as Emcee introduced himself (again) and laid out the activities for the day. He was wearing a different suit, although it was still in his signiature red and gold colors. The color was a slightly darker color, and the golden accents were glittery.*

*the crowd was a little apprehensive at first, but once trivia started and Mr. Emcee got comfortable in his element, he worked the crowd easily. He was enthusiastic, and it seemed the excitement was contagious. He even managed to get 4 particapants from the crowd to partake in the trivia.*

*only one participant managed to get all the correct answers and not get cold water dunked on them. He offered towels to the other three.*

*The Manager stood in the back, and the staff nodded in approval. All of them clapped at the right moments and snickered to each other, whispering inside jokes after every outside one Emcee made. Their approval was quiet but clear. He belonged here.*

“I’ve had some bad experiences with Kayne” is the understatement of the eon, Manager

“She’s a kid, what am I supposed to say?! Oh yea, this figure you care about enough to give an honorific killed everyone I love and will again if a random guy I picked out of nowhere doesn’t stop him?! I can’t say that to a kid!”

*The Manager… smiled.*

“Yes. I am. I just wanted to know what was happening. Thank you.”

*they actually stepped back, letting her go.*

She nods, one of the flowers from her decrepit flower crown dropping to the floor. She steps a little closer, worry and sadness crossing her face.

“Yes, but did I do something wrong? You’re a little… um…”

She waves a hand up at the Manager’s face. At how pale they are.

She steps even closer. She hardly reaches their knee she’s so small.

“Do… do you want a hug?”

*The Manager smiled, kneeling in front of her.*

“I’m okay sweetheart. I just… have some bad experiences with mister Kayne. I get a little scared when people mention him, that’s all.”

*The Manager went backstage and waved to him over the mirror.*

“I have to hand it to you, I was nervous, but you did well. I’m surprised you weren’t getting booked out for your shows months in advance with a performance like that.”

*The Manager calm demeanor immediately turned to rage as they gripped her hand tightly. Their eyes glowed white.*

“Don’t you dare call them lunatics for protecting themselves! The only reason they have them is because of people like you!”

*they took a breath, their eyes normal and their grip softer.*

“Would you rather them have no way to defend themself if someone like you started to strangle them?”

*One waiter stepped forward to stop him while another had to stop themselves from laughing. The Manager stopped the first waiter, but did make a note to teach Emcee the heimlich so this didn’t happen again.

It helped that the constant actually clearly thanked Emcee afterward for saving them.

The Manager stopped and asked if they were okay after they left the stage. They were fine. Maybe a slight bruise on the stomach, but okay. The Manager sat them down and get them some water, but seemed pleased with how Emcee handled the situation.*

*The Manager gestured to the scorched wood at her feet.*

“I just want to be there to contain the fire when that happens.”

*Their smile faded, but not to anger. Just to… nothing.*

“I didn’t do anything. I don’t want to isolate you, you’re welcome to be with others. I just don’t want anyone to get hurt. Most of them have guns, and I don’t want any drawn.

“You’re welcome to dig for information, I don’t care. They all know every bad thing I’ve done already. But they also know I’m a lot better than the alternative.

“And it’s not an empty room. All of the rooms you see in front of you have full baths, queen beds, and come with a book of every genre in the bedside tables. You don’t even have to stay in there. I just think sleep would benefit you.”

*they were calm. A bit exasperated, but calm.*

“And I think, just maybe, you wouldn’t feel like I was starving you for information if you actually asked me what you wanted to ask me instead of trying to get me to let my guard down. I lost that ability a long time ago.”

The cracks are peaking through her shirt and onto her neck…

“No, I don't wanna talk, and you won't make me!”

She notices her state and sighs like it's a minor annoyance.

“... I should go.”

She follows through, leaving scorch marks in her wake.

“Vixen, wait!”

*The Manager ran after her, cutting in front of her.*

“I won’t make you talk. I won’t act concerned at all if you don’t want, I won’t do anything. I just…”

*at this point they still looked concerned but mostly for the floor.*

“I just want to help. In any way I can.”

“I’m Orchid! Because my dad found me outside a shop selling them. Also they’re pretty!”

She smiles up at the Manager, then turns her head a bit to the side.

“Oh, you’re bright. Not as bright as mister Kayne though.”

It’s an offhand comment, hardly any thought to the words. It’s not clear what she means by bright, but regular brightness is incredibly unlikely. She looks like she expects them to understand what she means.

“Anyway! You can help me find my dad?”

*The Manager face went white as their suit.*

“Mister Kayne…”

*they cleared their throat to keep themself from crying.*

“Yes, but I need to ask you a few questions first. Is that okay?”

“Well.” Director W. dropped her arms back down to her sides. “I’m sorry you’re always getting injured. And that I had to be a contributor to that injury — even if you don’t mind.”

After a couple long seconds of awkward silence, Director W. took a deep breath and stood up straight.

“Right. It’s late. I should be, uh, getting off to bed. There wouldn’t happen to be somewhere I can sleep?” She tilted her head a little. “…And are you sure you don’t want me to clean your office?”

“I’m sure.”

*The Manager got on their feet, wincing a bit, but okay. They pointed right across the hall.*

“78 is empty.”

*The Manager was still smiling, but their posture was clear. They were ready to dodge, but not run.*

“I can show you an to empty room if you like. But honestly, I don’t feel comfortable leaving you around other patrons right now, at least not entirely. You’re scared, I get it, but I can’t risk you hurting anyone. I can heal. Some of them can’t.”

[she looks down and swings her legs around the side of the bed]

"Yeah, I know. Sorry."

[troy sighs. he's seen these shutdowns before, and he does not want this to be one. he swings his legs around the other side and looks at the manager]

"Mx. Manager? Do you have like...showers? And/or washing machines? I think we both slept in our clothes. Em, I don't know about you, but I feel grimey."

“Of course. There’s two showers in this room and extra clothes in an offshoot of the main area, I can take you. While the clothes you came in get washed you can wear those.”
