“I never cared who you were…”

“Come with me. Save yourself, you don’t owe these people any more. You’ve given them everything.”

“Never steal anything from someone you can’t outrun, kid.”

“About the whole no guns thing… I’m not sure I feel as strongly about that as you do.”

“I want what you owe me.”

“No…I’m afraid that you want to fail.”

“This means your hatred…but it also might mean saving your life. And that is more important.”

“Keep her close, he’ll come for her.”

“I’m afraid I can’t allow you to leave with those.”

“Torture. But not of your body…of your soul.”

“Survival is in the spirit. The soul.”

“Fear not death, let death fear you.”

“Well then, I guess we’re both suckers.”

“Maybe you’re being unrealistic about what’s really in your pants other than your wallet.”

“I watched you die.”

“Why are you here?”

“A hero can be anyone.”

“How can you move faster than possible, fight longer than possible, without the most powerful impulse of the spirit: the fear of death?”

“I had it under control.”

“Those weren’t street thugs, they were trained killers. I saved your life.”

“Fear will find you again.”

“You don’t fear death, you welcome it.”

“A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy’s shoulders to let him know the world hadn’t ended.”

“I do fear death. I fear dying in here.”

❥ NON - SEXUAL ACTS OF DOMINANCE

Sebastian had a way with words. to say the very least. He had a gift and notably so however, now was not the time for his exploitative use of vocabulary. Batair could usually take the man’s constant chatter but after the day he had just endured, riding the edge of sanity, he needed a bit of peace.

“𝙎𝙚𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙣.” Leon finally interjected mid sentence, voice low with command at just the sound of the other man’s name being spoken.

A single large hand was held up in an effort to not speak another word.

Note

Batair examined each tree thoroughly; watching how the branches intermingled with each other. The overall shape had to be… 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩. Sebastian seemed less than amused by his scouting, but Batair was convinced the surgeon was just the man he needed to pick out the grandest of all trees. “Yes, Prescott. I am entirely aware that buying a tree is the practical thing to do, but just look around you. The intoxicating scent of pine, the feel of the trees around you, listen to them and the right one will find us.” 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍, that’s what Leon thought of this experience.

A few more steps and Batair stopped mid track, eyes gazing up and for a man of his stature, that was serious. A gleaming smile overtook his features causing his beard to heighten in intensity. “Here she is.” He whispered. “I’ve found her.” He called louder to Sebastian.

Dropping his dense wool coat, he pulled the hatchet from its holster at his side. “It’s got to be what, twelve- no, fifteen feet tall?” Eyes admired the shape of the glorious pine until he turned back to Sebastian with a chuckle.

Maybe this was something that Leon had practiced back in Detroit with his old squad. Sebastian had been dragged on as someone to give an opinion, leaving him just slightly irritated at the prospect of being dragged out to chop down a tree–but he was, regrettably, Leon’s friend. He had to do what he could to help the other man.
