          the  man  frowned   (  or  rather pouted  )    as his  hands  were  slapped  by  the  boy.   who  did  this  CHILD  thing  he  was??  while  he  might  not  go  by  the  name  of  ‘flynn riider’  it  didn’t make  the  adventures he  went  on  under  the  false  name  any  less  valid.    so  what  rights did  this  literal child  have  to  slap  away  the  hands  of  a  seasoned  adventurer like  himself???  

             it’s  not  like  he’d  have  any  real  experience  in  o-    oh.   okay.    yeah  the  kid  was  right  and  that  would  have  ended  badly.    maybe he  was  more  out  of  practice  than  he  thought.   damn  booby  traps.   “  i’m  sure  we’ll  be  FINE,    kid.   i  mean  how  hard  can  it  be  to  get  out  of  some  complicated cave  of  an  old  science nerd?”  

          ☄  ||  varian  couldn’t  help  but  roll  his  eyes  in  a  brief  ,  RARE  show  of  impatience.  without  a  word  ,  he  pivoted  on  his  toes  and  marched  across  the  cave  until  he  was  face-to-face  with  a  statue  a  few  heads  taller  than  him.  in  perhaps  what  was  a  COMICAL  display  , the  statue  was  pushed  into   the  pathway  leading  deeper  into  the  cave’s  depths  where  varian  let  it  rest.  he  scooped  a  small  stone  from  the  floor  before  heading  back  to  eugene  ,  SQUINTED  ,  and  threw  the  stone  just  a  few  inches  in  front  of where  the  statue  stood.

           IMMEDIATELY:  explosive  sounds  rang  out  ,  followed  by  a  PUFF  of  colourful  smokes  ,  and  loud  WHIZZING  of  airborne  projectiles.  the  statue  was  covered  inch  to  inch  in  a  substance  similar  to  varian’s  sticky  gel  ,  with  small  arrows  sticking  halfway  out  of  it.

          “about  that  complicated,”  varian  said  once  the  dust  had  settled,  “don’t  forget  that  these  ‘old  science  nerds’ are  the  ones  that  came  up  with  half  the  things  we  all  take  for  GRANTED  ,  eugene.”

Deep Ass Starters.

Sometimes it’s hard to get in depth with your muse and their backstory, because you can’t figure out how to bring those things up with others. Here are a couple of starters intended to make things a little more personal!

“What’s holding you back?”

“I’m not comfortable with this conversation.”

“Will you /ever/ be comfortable with this conversation?”

“Let me in sometime!”

“It’s not that easy, you know.”

“It’s hard to connect with someone when all they do is push you away.”

“Why are you always so cold?”

“Who hurt you this badly to make you this way?!”

“What, did your ex mess you up that badly?!”

“Why do you keep fighting it any time you feel?”

“It’s a problem, I get it.”

“This is all kinds of messed up.”

“That’s not exactly a good coping method.”

“So what happened, with your parents, really?”

“What was your childhood like?”

“Everyone has at lest a little bit of mommy/daddy issues. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

“My parents aren’t exactly perfect models, either.”

“You were bullied? What for?”

“Was it hard? Coming out, I mean.”

“You can’t just run away all the time.”

“You can’t just hide all the time.”

“Are you still thinking about them?”

“I’m not the enemy here. But this makes me wonder who the real one is for you.”

“Is the reason you’re so cold and defensive because you feel threatened?”

“How long has it been since you last spoke to them?”

“You never talk about it, why?”

“How come you’re so different around them?”

“It’s like you don’t have a care or worry in the world.”

“You seem so perfect. I don’t get it.”

“What was your ex like?”

“I don’t think I was ever good enough for them.”

“Are you not comfortable being intimate?”

“Why don’t you feel comfortable being intimate?”

“Letting someone see you that vulnerable, it’s a scary thing.”

“Are you scared of being hurt?”

“Have you ever been taken advantage of?”

“Why are you afraid of saying I love you?”

“I never understood how someone could say those words so easily.”

“You’re hurting others the way you’ve been hurt in the past, don’t you think that’s ironic?”

“You use people to make yourself feel better.”

“I’m scared of being used again…”

“Losing someone isn’t easy, but you’re making it harder than it needs to be.”

“How long has it been since you lost them?”

“You’re too attached.”

“I’m not attached, I’m just comfortable with what I’m familiar to.”

“Maybe the real reason you’re so controlling is because, deep down you’d rather have them in your grasp than lose them.”

he ESPECIALLY hates it when people assume he doesn't know what he's doing) #(or that he's not taking every precaution necessary to keep everyone safe.) #(he KNOWS his alchemy and inventions can be destructive. he KNOWS he has a bad reputation bc of it) #(and he isn't deaf to the rumours that spread about him and certainly not blind to the weird looks and worried glances) #(that even his friends and close ones make when he starts talking about alchemy/inventions/science)

weaknesses/flaws headcanons / @moonstonetm​ / ACCEPTING. send me a 👎 and i’ll tell you a weakness/flaw my muse has.

            ||.  sometimes  varian  can  come  across  as  the  SMARTEST  PERSON  IN  THE  ROOM.  both  because  he  IS  and  because  he  is  intentionally  making  himself  out  to  be.  this  doesn’t  necessarily  come  from  a  place  of  malice  or  an  inflated  ego  or  even  really  an  over-confidence  in  his  abilities  as  an  alchemist.

          while  ,  yes  ,  varian  is  100%  sure  in  himself  as  far  as  his  calling  FOR  the  art  of  alchemy  ,  chemistry  ,  science  &.  inventions  go  ,  and  he’s  CERTAINLY  not  one  to  second  guess  his  instincts  ,  he  can  get  caught  up  in  how  OTHER  PEOPLE  perceive  said  instincts  &.  natural  alchemical  talents.

          when  he  BOASTS  &.  proclaims  himself  as  a  MASTER  ALCHEMIST  ,  it’s  both  a  literal  claim  to  the  title  he  naturally  inherits  as  the  ONLY  alchemist  currently  in  corona  (something  that  is  frustrating  but  that  varian  takes  great  pride  in)  ,  and  a  way  to  REASSURE  himself  and  those  around  him  that  despite  his  bad  reputation  &.  the  rumours  that  have  spread  about  him  henceforth  ,  he  actually DOES  know  what  he’s  doing  &.  IS  trying  to  do  what’s  best  for  everyone  in  the  room.

         despite  this  though  ,  he  CAN  get  carried  away.  being  the  ONLY  aclhemist  in  corona  does  come  with  the  ingranied  notion  that  no  matter  how  often  or  in-depth  you  explain  something  to  someone  ,  unless  they  themselves  ARE  an  alchemist  (or  scientist.  or  inventor.  or  just  capable  of  comprehending  such  massive  scientific  feats)  ,  they’ll  9/10  not  get  it.

          ||. don’t  you  DARE  think  about  the  fact  that  ,  before  the  tail  end  of  QUEEN  FOR  A  DAY  ,  varian  was  never  angry  out  of  VENGANCE.  in  fact  ,  he  was  never  ever  truly  ANGRY.  he  would  become  UPSET  (  with  his  father  not  telling  him  the  truth  ;  not  trusting  him  enough  to  understand  the  gravity  of  the  situation  )  but  that’s  not  becoming  ANGRY.  ANGER  is  an  entirely  different  emotion.  

       the  times  when  he  SHOULD  HAVE  gotten  angry  ,  varian  became  DISAPPOINTED.

           the ONE  TIME  he  had  every  right  to  become  angry  -  or  at  least  FRUSTRATED  -  was  when  cassandra  broke  her  promise  to  give  him  five  minutes  of  her  time  to  help  him  with  the  expo.  

instead  ,  he  just...  takes  it  and  tries  to  SMILE.  he  tries  to  reassure  cass  that  it’s  okay  ,  it’s  alright.  it’s  not  like  he  was  looking  forward  to  it  or  anything  and  even  if  he  WAS  ,  well...  that’s  okay  too.  he  can  just  get  another  assistant  ,  it  doesn’t  matter  ;  go  live  your  dream.  go  make  your  father  proud.  he’s  HURT (and  rightfully so!)  but  he  doesn’t  want  cassandra  to  feel  bad  about  it.

      and  when  cassandra  talks  to  him  to  check  up  on  him  after  he  LOSES?  he’s  still  not  angry.  he’s  not  angry  with  the  unfair  judge  or  at  cass  ,  he’s  just  DISAPPOINTED.  &.  honestly  he’s  still  not  disappointed  with  any  of  them  or  the  situation  ,  he’s  disappointed  in  HIMSELF.

          so  to  have  moments  in  season  3  like  the  hot  air  balloon  with  Xavier  or  any  other  small  moment  where  varian  gets  IRRITATED  &.  FRUSTRATED  &.  ANGRY  with  other  people?? that  breaks  my  heart  ,  quite  frankly  ,  because  it  shows  just  how  deeply  the  effects  of  abandonment  &.  the  darkness  he  let  into  his  heart  because  of  it  run.

           ||.  varian  has  always  been  a  bit  of  a   ...  CLINGY  friend.  not  necessarily  in  a  bad  way  ,  but  once  he  considers  you  a  friend  (or  perceives  your  relationship  with  him  as  even  a  HOPEFUL  friendship)  he  can  be  a  little  difficult  to  shake  off.  he’ll  want  to  help  you  out  ,  give  you  gifts  ,  share  his  passions  -  anything  that  any  fourteen  year  old  kid  would  do  with  their  BEST  FRIEND.  except  you  aren’t  best  friends.  not  yet  anyways.  

          having  not  had  many  friendships  before  (and  certainly  not  many  his  OWN  AGE)  ,  varian  can  go  a  little  OVERBOARD  when  it  comes  to  showing  you  his  affections  &.  while  it  comes  from  a  place  of  genuine  LOVE  &.  GOOD  WILL  ,  it  can  be  ...�� A  LOT  to  process  all  at  once  ,  especially  if  you’re  the  sort  to  be  guarded  with  new  people.  (see:  CASSANDRA,  GREAT  EXPOTATIONS)

          after  the  events  of  RAPUNZEL’S  RETURN  ,  this  sort  of  overzealous  clinginess  becomes  a  bit  more...  ACUTE.  after  rapunzel  decides  to  extend  an  olive  branch  to  him  one  last  time  ,  varian  becomes  DETERMINED  not  to  throw  it  away.  he  does  everything  in  his  power  to  stay  on  rapunzel  &.  co.’s  GOOD  SIDE  ,  even  to  his  own  detriment  ,  because  he  doesn’t  want  to  LOSE  THEM.  they  already  abandoned  him  once  and  he  doesn’t  want  to  force  their  hand  into  leaving  him  behind.  AGAIN.

        needless  to  say  ,  even  WELL  INTO  his  redemption  ,  varian’s  efforts  to  be  seen  as  someone  VALUABLE  to  those  he  cares  about  only  grows  tenfold.

           ☄  ||  wide  eyed  gaze  SWEPT  OVER  the  remains  of  another  invention  gone  WRONG.  mangled  iron  &.  splintered  wood  lay  scattered  across  the  ground.  shaky  inhale  as  gloved  fingers  curled  against  varian’s  sides  ,  clutching  at  the  worn  fabric  of  his  blue  tunic  as  his  heart  sank  ,  and  his  blood  ran  as  COLD  as  the  sweat  on  his  brow.

              THUNDERING  STEPS  ,  a  glint  of  GOLD  &.  CRIMSON  uniforms  as  cassandra  and  her  SQUADRON  booked  it  for  the  town  plaza  where  the  science  expo  HAD  been.  seeing  her  --  varian  shivered.  gods  ,  the  last  thing  he  wanted  to  do  was  ruin  her  chance  at  leading  a  troop.  AGAIN.  yet  ...  here  he  was  again.  standing  in  the  thick  of  a  disaster  caused  by  his  own  hand  with  nothing  to  SHOW  FOR  IT  but  wreckage  &.  a  few  rushed  ,  anxiously  spewed  APOLOGIES.

           “—— CASSANDRA.  it —  i-i--  there  was  a  mistake.  a  simple -s-simple  MISCALCULATION.  i’m ——  i’m  SO  sorry.  i  didn’t  mean  any  of  this;  i’ll  clean  it  ALL  up.”

           ☄  ||   “AH-AH-AH. what  do  you  think  you’re  DOING?  don’t  TOUCH  that!”  the  young  alchemist  hurried  to slap  eugene’s  hand  from  the  pedestal he’d  nearly  got  his hands  all  over.  SEASONED  ADVENTURER  varian  may  not  be  ,  but  he  DID  know  alchemy  when  he  saw  it  ,  and  he  was  more  attuned  to  booby  traps  &.  pitfalls  than  he  might  seem  to  be  at  first  glance.  “this  is  an  ancient  relic  used  by  a  fabled  alchemist  from  eons  passed.  if  we  don’t  act  CAREFULLY  ,  there’s  no  way  we’ll  be  able  to  get  it  back  to  rapunzel.  AT  ALL.”
