ough i started thinking about the inherent tragedy of a spare heir

what if you and your sister had the same tutors, same arms instructor, same conversations with your mother regarding politics and strategies and the million terrible choices a ruler must make. but all of them, from your nursery governess to your fencing coach to your mother herself, knew that she was real and you-- weren't. not yet. only if the unthinkable happened. what if you were a walking reminder that she wasn't invincible. what if you were tragedy's page, carrying its train, walking soft in the shadow of all of their hopes that you would never be needed.

i love u characters who are victims who don't show things in a way that's appealing i love u characters whos trauma leaves them with anger issues, with violence issues, with issues with connection and trust and being truthful i love you characters who don't get "better" in a way that's palatable, who don't find growth and meaning in their trauma

Jake wasn’t used to housing people who weren’t ex-pets. He wasn’t used to having people show up to his doorstep, bleeding and out of breath and barely on their feet. The man’s sandy-blond hair was caked with blood from a gash that stretched over his right eye and disappeared into his hairline. Deep blue-black circles looking almost like bruises were carved into the skin below his light-brown eyes. Jake stared at him for a moment before the stranger swayed and fell to one knee.

I could fix him. I could make him worse. Good for you. I could gently take the weapon out of his shaking, blood-soaked hand and hold him until he finally believes that he doesn't have to be defined by all the ways the world has hurt him. Then we could ruin the lives of everyone who has ever treated him like he's a monster who doesn't deserve love.

"Please- It hurts!" Whumper's voice sounded foreign bleating out such words. They looked up to see a wild grin distort Whumpee's face.

"Does it now?" Whumpee chuckled.

"Why are you doing this to me?"

Whumper long forgot their own actions, but the scars etched into whumpee's skin told a different story. If only whumpee understood that whumper has a twin.

Nonhuman expressions of affection are great. Purring. Exposing weak points as a show of trust. Head bonks. Preening and chewing. Nuzzling. Biting. Intertwining tails. Feeding each other. Little chuffs, chatters, beeps and squeaks. Fluffing up of feathers, fur or other things. Dancing to impress. Cleaning their fur, scales, feathers or skin. Sharing body heat. Ears pointing toward those you care about to show your full attention is on them. Slow blinking.

a trope I love and don’t see nearly enough: when a battle/fight breaks out but nobody bothers to free the prisoner.

whumpee is just stuck chained up or tied down while chaos erupts around them. perhaps dangling from the ceiling, or locked to the floor on their knees, all while getting grazed with arrows or bullets that just barely miss them. or maybe they don’t miss.

whumpee getting pummeled into when one assailant body slams another. someone else’s blood spattering whumpee’s face when one stabs another.

the captivity has left them so weak. maybe they’re barely conscious of the commotion around them, dazed eyes flitting over flying fists and spattered blood.

do they cry out for help? is there anyone they can trust here? do they dare? does anyone care? can anyone even hear them over all the commotion?

are their friends trying to rescue them? or is it just another team who wants whumpee to themselves? if their friends are trying to save them, whumpee is now they’re just stuck watching their friends get hurt by whumper’s goons and being unable to do anything about it but cry out to them and tell them they’re sorry. they shouldn’t have come. they’re so sorry.

terrified whumpee yanking at the restraints and begging their friends to turn back. that it’s not worth it. to leave them here and surrender, retreat, to escape while they can before they end up just like whumpee, chained up and useless and utterly helpless to whumpers whims.

I like the idea of a whumpee panicking when they see their friends coming to rescue them. they know there’s no chance they’d win, not against whumper. that was the only solace whumpee had, that at least their loved ones were safe, and now they’re watching that slip away with every team member captured before their eyes.

the guilt, the panic, the helplessness, I love it all.

I bet carving magical runes/circles onto a whumpee would be fun. not even spells that necessarily hurt them, just things that a wizard needs a carved-up vessel in order to cast. like, carve the necessary symbols into a whumpee's back so that they can be used to channel a summoning spell. cut the circles into their hands so that they can boil the water for you. very useful!
