ICYMI: This photo of two women embracing on a train platform in Brazil has gone viral over the last week. Why? Here’s the caption translated:

I’m not prejudiced, I think everyone should do what they want with their life. But I think it’s absurd that I’m forced to witness a scene like this.

What one does is in private is their problem, but what one does in public concerns me. And I refuse to see a scene like this and consider it something normal.

I don’t wish bad on anyone, but these people should be careful. They’re defying social conventions and that can be dangerous. And if a tragedy occurs? Or worse, someone dies. Who is to blame? Me ?

Or worst of all is the example it sets children.

What will happen to the mind of a child who sees this every day? Children are going to think that it’s normal to wait for the subway on the yellow line.

So, don’t be like that guy over there. Follow the example of the girls. Wait for the subway BEHIND the yellow line, and only cross it after the subway has made a complete stop and opened its doors.

Super nice things to do for someone who has depression

- Chances are their room is a disaster and they have -846 motivation to do anything about it. Helping them tidy up will make them feel a little less overwhelmed. 

- Do their laundry. Even small chores seem to pile up when a person is depressed and not having clean clothes won’t make them feel any better. Washing their bedding is also great.

- Try to convince them to go for a short walk with you. There is a good chance they will feel a lot better after.

- If you can’t get them outside, at least open a window for fresh air and let some sunshine in.

- Prepare them a healthy meal with some fresh fruit. Many depressed people fall into bad eating patterns. 

- If they aren’t eating enough, make sure they are taking a multi vitamin since not getting enough of a vitamin causes depression

- Make them a warm, nice smelling bath. Aromatherapy is a great way to treat depression and anxiety. 

- Write them a letter or card to read for when they’re feeling really bad.

- Make them a recovery playlist with some of their favourite songs and anything up lifting.

- Make them laugh.

- Make them a cup of tea and sit with them.

- Listen to them and try to understand what they’re feeling.

How Carmen Carrera’s interview on Katie Couric’s show went down

Carmen discussed her goal to become the first trans Victoria’s Secret model, so the interview had a good start

The interview started to go downhill after Katie Couric starting to only ask questions about  Carmen’s transition and introducing her by saying “she was born a man and that’s why she’s on our show” 

But she managed to handle it pretty well

And then Katie asked this

But Carmen then proceeded to shut Katie down and explain that there are other things to discuss

I’m tricking my students into writing a research paper by having them write an open letter and then strengthen their argument by adding evidence. They were allowed to write about anything they wanted for the first draft of their open letter, and one of my 10th grade boys decided he wanted to write about girls who only like bands because the members are cute and don’t really care about the music.

I let him do it because I’ve found that shutting down a student’s idea at the first draft stage tends to make them more obstinate about the topic. I figured we’d get to the evidence-gathering stage, he wouldn’t be able to find scholarly sources and he would change his topic.

Well lo and behold, today he comes into class and tells me he’s changing his topic. Apparently, he couldn’t find any evidence and he figured he was being kind of hypocritical because he gets really excited about athletes he doesn’t even know and the only reason that’s different than fangirls is because it’s him. He actually told me that he realized that writing that first letter would be pretty condescending. He’s going to write about LGBT rights instead.

This next generation, y’all. There’s some good stuff happening.
