You can only redeem a Star Wars villain if he’s an angsty boi

Ben Solo desires to become like his idealized grandfather, Darth Vader, and yet he is so much like his actual grandfather, Anakin Skywalker. On the surface, they're both whiny, impetuous, and vindictive, but on a deeper level they fundamentally both want to give a shit about other people. They both act selfishly and ultimately in self-defeating ways because they've felt betrayed.

Anakin Skywalker was failed by the Jedi teachings, as Luke tells Rey. He wanted to care about his mother, and has that stripped from him by the Jedi training, which for the sake of non-attachment traumatically cuts him off from her. His love for Padme is initially pure, and only becomes polluted by possessiveness in his final fall to the dark side. Anakin initially turns from the Jedi because he believes he can protect her by doing so, and will have her support even with the loss of his Jedi identity, when she dies, he has nothing.

Kylo was failed by Luke himself, and once again Luke admits this in canon. Kylo sees Luke as a father figure, and feels betrayed when Luke tries to kill him, fearing his turn to the dark side, causing that very turn. It is against Luke and the Jedi that he turns, not against his parents. But his parents implicitly side with Luke, so Ben inevitably is alienated from them, and he too has nothing.

Because Ben and Anakin feel like they have nobody else to turn to, they both end up in abusive relationships as subs to Sith Lords who only desire them for their power. At least they are being desired. The mask that Kylo desires to disguise his loneliness with is same that Darth Vader hid his own in. Darth Vader can only turn against the Emperor in establishing a human connection with his son, and Kylo Ren can only turn against Snoke because of his bond with Rey.
