In some areas of Central and Southern Italy in the XVIII century, betrothed couple used to exchange a handmade pocket knife called ‘coltello dell’amore’ (love knife). Blades bore romantic words and incisions, while handles had decorations in white horn made to symbolize eyes (called ‘occhi di dado’) - an amulet to protect your loved one against malicious and jealous looks. These artisanal love knives can still be handmade to this day according to tradition.
