Mass Spectrometry 101
Tumblr media
What is Mass Spectrometry, you may ask?
Mass spectrometry is an analytical tool used by chemists and physicists to measure the weight of atomic particles. These particles can be either single atoms or molecules. The results are used to create a mass spectrum (the mass-to-charge ratio graphically) to determine the isotopic signature of a sample, the masses of the particles, and even the chemical composition of compounds. Mass spectrometry is accomplished in this series of steps:
1) Ionization – Most spectrometers work with positively charged ions, though some work with negatively charged ions instead. The particles are bombarded with electrons to knock off at least one electron to give the particle a positive charge. This step is done even with particles that you would expect to already be carrying a positive charge, such as halogens like chlorine.

Why You Need To Visit Italy’s Secret Sparkling Wine Region
Italy’s answer to champagne is franciacorta, the country’s best-kept wine secret. Franciacorta—a name that refers to the territory, the production method and the vino—is a small bucolic wine region whose sloping hills overlook the shores of Lake Iseo. Sitting an hour east of Milan, it’s a popular wine-tasting getaway for Italians, but the destination hasn’t yet caught on in the United States.

Bordeaux is a great fall wine. However, first growth Bordeaux is outrageously expensive and also very hard to find. Second-wines of great Bordeaux producers, however, are pretty good alternative for trying out real, world-class stuff. It’s still very expensive! I just point this out so that people looking for the real deal don’t get too discouraged.
