Along with the Straight Story, the Elephant Man ranks as one of David Lynch’s most classically told and humane films, a hint that if he actually wanted to make ‘normal films’, he was always more than capable. His depiction of John Merrick is heartbreaking, presenting a man who is kind and intelligent, unlike his captors or tormentors (and there are many). John Hurt is amazing here, his performance doused in empathy.
