What to do in the Jemez Mountains
The Jemez Mountains are about two hours from Albuquerque, and are full of things to do. On the way to Jemez, stop in the Red Rocks area on Highway 4 for the best frybread and Navajo tacos, sold across the street from the Walatowa Visitor Center.
Jemez Falls
Hot Springs in the Jemez

Hiking in the Albuquerque area
Some important things to know before hiking in Albuquerque is that, first and foremost, we are at over 5,000 feet. This means hiking in the Sandias could potentially lead to altitude sickness and harsher sunburn. Make sure to bring plenty of water, use sunscreen, wear good shoes and go at your own place. Secondly, the Albuquerque area is rich with wildlife. Try not to stray off the trail and keep an eye out for dangerous animals like rattlesnakes, big cats, and bears.
Here are some of the best hiking trails in Albuquerque!
Black Volcano & JA Volcano
These two trails are far out on Albuquerque’s West Side, but they give you the unique opportunity to hike two (or three, if you choose to hike to Vulcan) dormant volcanoes. You also get an unparalleled view of the city and the Sandias, which are especially stunning at sunset.
Piedras Marcadas Canyon and Boca Negra Canyon
Two rather short, easy hikes with visible petroglyphs.
North Crest Trail
A beautiful, moderately short hike accessed by driving up the Sandia Mountains.
Tumblr media
La Luz Trail
The classic Albuquerque long hike. Bring lots of water and snacks, and start early, because this trail is 8-9 miles long and will take you up to 10,378 feet. Check the weather before going, and take a look at the website for more information. It is possible to hike up and take the Sandia tram down, or add the North Crest trail onto your trip.
