Dean runs across the ad by accident. He’s surfing local newspapers, scanning for something that might resemble a hunt, and he skims through the classifieds for the hell of it. Sometimes there’s fun stuff in there, chickens for sale, or even a haunted dresser.

People can mean a lot of things by “ghost town.” Sometimes there’s actual ghosts; just as often, there aren’t. A ghost town can be a tourist attraction, with actors dressed up in old-timey clothes and machines that turn pennies into little imprinted medallions, sometimes those places where you can try out the get-up yourself and get sepia-tinged photographs.

Dean hasn’t been to one of those in a while. He was thinking he should get Cas to go with him to the one in Dodge City, a while back, but now — well, now it feels weird. Cas is back from the dead, again, only now there’s this elephant in the room — I love you — and Dean’s not sure what to do with that.

He’s just pretty sure the answer isn’t bullying Cas into a Wyatt Earp costume.

Castiel stays in his seat, the dread in his gut weighing him down as they roll to a stop.

“It’s a gathering,” he says flatly, looking at the house.

“Down here, we call it ‘a party’,” James says. He kills the ignition and swings the car door open. Castiel steps out slowly, as if the ground below him is about to cave in. He can hear the soft beat of music thumping past the walls, and through the windows, he spots the shapes of people milling inside, some spilling out past the door. The house is built out of old red bricks, framed by dark panels and clusters of thick vine crawling up into the cracks. He reaches out, instinctively, for the grace that isn’t there, but all he has are his human senses—the vision of people smiling, laughing, holding a red cup in their hands; the smell of cigarette smoke and something sharper and earthier; the feel of the soft ground underneath his boots, fresh from the rainfall this afternoon. Anyone here could be an angel, a demon, or a monster. “Right,” Castiel says.

actually you know what I DO think they kissed (improv) and then execs saw the finished episode and were like “what the fuck” and edited it in a rage fuelled rush and KICKED misha and jensen out of the thank u video (for kissing each other). My opinion will definitely change sometime in the next ten minutes

Dean has entered into what he can only categorize as: Domestic Bliss with Cas. Something that should scare the shit out of him, but he’s weirdly been able to find peace with it. Probably because he’s not hunting, and there is no end of the world to worry about anymore.

Whatever the reason, he knows enough not to question it. That’s why he’s been ignoring the sharp pains in his head that have started to come around all too frequently.

do you have any fic recs for underrated fics? like under 5k hits?

yes! there are a ton of fics in my bookmarks with less than 5k hits, so it was difficult to choose a reasonable amount. here are some of my favorites:

in this louisiana bar, where s10 cas meets pre-series Dean and offers him some nice reassurance and comfort. very sweet. I recommend ANYTHING by fleeceframe in general, I love the way they write Dean and Cas. another underrated fleeceframe fav of mine is it's such a mystery (the way you know me)

*hold onto your voice, hold onto your breath, I cannot BELIEVE this fic has less than 5k hits. Dean rescues Cas from the Empty. Orpheus and Eurydice vibes (in a way). The writing is beautiful. Absolutely love this fic.

On Other Seas by aeli_kindara (another fav author of mine) which is a cute, feel good post-canon fic with toddler!jack and dinosaurs :) sequel to the equally as amazing In Small Ponds.

thunder road, which technically has more than 5k hits (5.9k) but I love this fic so much!!! dean and cas post-canon road trip. incredible vibes.

hope, love, glory a post-canon fic where Claire and Jack team up to save their dads
