Port Talbot School Teacher Awarded Highest Netball Umpiring Qualification.
Alison Davies of Fforestfach has received the International Umpiring Award [IUA] from the International Netball Federation at the recent Netball World Youth Cup.  The IUA is the highest qualification level that can be achieved by a netball umpire.  Alison is currently the only umpire in Wales that holds the IUA status.
Tumblr media
On her recent achievements, Alison said:
“To say I have achieved my IUA at the Netball World Youth Cup semi-final is still like a dream which I have to keep repeating to myself,” said Alison, who is a PE Teacher and Wellbeing Director of the Upper School at the brand new Ysgol Bae Baglan ‘super school’ in Port Talbot.
“I have had the most incredible two weeks of netball at the Netball World Youth Cup – I have met and umpired with amazing and talented friends from around the world.
“So many people have played such a big part in me getting here, it’s a dream come true.”
Alison began umpiring in 2012 before quickly starting her international umpiring career later the same year in Gibraltar at a Netball Europe Ranking tournament.  She has since built on her experience umpiring at the prestigious Vitality Netball Superleague after being selected into its umpiring pool, and was heavily supported by the mentors, assessors and fellow umpires within the league.
Alison has had a very busy year umpiring around the globe, including the recent Summer Quad Series in Northern Ireland, the World University Netball Championships in Miami in 2016, and the Celtic Clash between Scotland and Northern Ireland the same year.
According to Alison, Welsh Netball have supported her every step of the way:
“I’m grateful to Welsh Netball and the mentors who have supported me all the way through,” said Alison, who is originally from Pyle.
“They’ve helped me to umpire at the U17, U21 and senior camps, and I’ve taken advantage of every opportunity Welsh Netball and the INF has given me.”

Welsh Netball and Men's Rugby 7s selected for 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games
Commonwealth Games Wales have today confirmed that the Wales netball team and men's Rugby 7s will be competing at next year's Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.
Netball and men's rugby 7s are the first team sport to be selected for a place in the Team Wales squad at next year's Games, having met the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) qualification requirements.
The Wales netball team retained their 8th position in the International Netball Federation's World Rankings, making them eligible for a place at the 2018 Games alongside 11 other teams.
The Welsh men's rugby 7s side qualified as 8th Commonwealth nation in this year’s World Rugby Sevens Series.
Helen Phillips, Chair of the Commonwealth Games Wales Board which today ratified the selection decision said: "This is fantastic news, we're absolutely thrilled that Welsh netball and the men's rugby 7s squad have secured their place at next year's Games.
"It's been an exciting year for Welsh netball, with the test series against New Zealand's Silver Ferns back in February drawing in the biggest ever crowds to watch international netball in Wales.
"Likewise, men's rugby 7s continue to perform well on the World series circuit and were unlucky not to medal in Glasgow 2014.
"Qualifying for the Gold Coast Games is down to the hard work and dedication of the players, their coaches and support staff at Welsh Netball and the Welsh Rugby Union.
"Now that netball and men's rugby 7s place in Team Wales is confirmed, we look forward to announcing other Welsh team sports over the coming months as they qualify for Gold Coast."
Sarah Jones, Welsh Netball CEO said: “We are thrilled to receive the ratified decision and are very much looking forward to being part of Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast.
“There has been significant preparation leading up to our successful qualification - highlights included an international three-day test series in South Africa last year, and the Swansea University International Test Series against world number 2 the Silver Ferns.
“We look forward to improving on our performance at Glasgow 2014, and building upon our success at the Netball World Cup in Sydney 2015.”
Geraint John, the Welsh Rugby Union's Head of Performance, said: "Competing in the Commonwealth Games is always a significant ambition for us, so we're delighted to qualify for the Gold Coast next year. The game is going from strength to strength in Wales, and under head coach Gareth Williams and assistant coach Richie Pugh our national side has been achieving some very positive results with an exciting young group of players.
"Whilst displaying some excellent performances in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and in Rugby Europe this year, the team has also managed to increase its strength in depth, so I have no doubt they will provide a formidable challenge as part of Team Wales in 2018."
Whilst team sports, weightlifting and para-sports places are determined by rankings, under a new Commonwealth Games Federation policy, individual athletes across other sports will be nominated by the National Governing Bodies based on eligibility and performance criteria.
Team Wales individual athlete selection will be made by Commonwealth Games Wales at the end of the year.

Netball on the Rise in Powys.
Netball activities in Powys have increased over the past twelve months as Welsh Netball make efforts to grow the game across the county.  As a result of hard work building relationships with Local Authorities, partners and volunteers, Welsh Netball have created more opportunities for the local communities to play and get involved in the sport.
Tumblr media
Working closely with the Local Authority, a brand new regular netball session for young children under the age of 13 was launched in September 2016 as part of Welsh Netball’s development programme called the Local Authority Hub [LA Hub].  Twenty-eight aspiring netballers, attend the sessions every month from November to June throughout the year, and took part in the region’s annual LA Hub showcase for the first time ever in June 2017.
17 candidates from all over Powys passed Welsh Netball’s Coaching course earlier this year and are now able to provide qualified Coaching in the county’s netball teams and clubs.  A brand new junior netball league was also formed in north Powys which has enabled local clubs to take part in a competitive netball competition for the first time.
Welsh Netball’s Head of Community Development, Ben Williams explains how his team’s work in Powys is part of the Governing Body’s vison to ‘Grow the Game’ in Wales:
“As part of our vision moving forward, we want more children and adults to become part of the great game of netball in Wales.  Whether that’s through playing, coaching, or officiating, we will continue to engage the nation in a sport which can provide them with much more than just physical activity.  Netball has proven to bring communities together, build confidence in young and old, provide new skills, and bring positive wellbeing.
“We’ve had a productive year and it’s clear that there is a demand for netball in Powys, with more development plans to come in the future, including expanding the LA Hub programme, and to grow the workforce by introducing our brand-new umpiring course to Powys, called ‘Intro to Umpiring’, in September this year.  This course can be taken by candidates in either Welsh or English.”
Hannah Pick, Welsh Netball’s Development Officer for Powys, who is currently promoting the sport at the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells this week, has played a key part in the developments made in Powys.  Hannah says that support from Local Authority, partners, councils, schools, and volunteers is crucial in the work to grow the game:
“I am delighted and grateful for the support we have had from the Local Authority, partners and members of the Powys communities in our joint effort to grow the sport in the area.
“I am very proud of the work we have done so far, but there is still much to do.  I look forward to continuing working with the enthusiastic members of the Powys community in providing as many opportunities as possible to enable more children and adults to be part of the growing netball family.”
Find out how you can get into netball by speaking to Hannah at the Welsh Netball stand within the Sports Village at the Royal Welsh Show this week.

Wales Fight Back to Win World Cup Thriller Against Barbados.
Wales’ U21 netball team have won their crucial match against Caribbean side Barbados at the Netball World Youth Cup 2017 [NWYC2017], winning 47-44.
Tumblr media
Head Coach Natalie Peperell said the squad gave it everything they had on court:
“The girls knew how important this game was for us and I’m proud that they gave it absolutely everything.
“It was not an easy game and that final quarter was tough, but our athletes kept their cool and fought well to take a close win.”
Wales have now secured at least a top 14 finish and will play their final match of the tournament for the 13th or 14th placing tomorrow at 1pm (GMT) against Trinidad and Tobago.
Wales have already played and lost against Trinidad and Tobago at their Pool match earlier this week. Head Coach Peperell said the win against Barbados will give them confidence against them again:
“We have played against Trinidad and Tobago already in this competition, so we’re familiar with their style of play and feel confident about tomorrow.
“No doubt it will be another exciting game and we’ll bring Welsh class to the court once more.”
Tomorrow’s 13th-14th play-off final will be available to watch live at Welsh Netball’s Facebook and Twitter (@welshnetball).  Tune in at 1pm (GMT).
Match synopsis: Wales v Barbados A thrilling match saw both teams fight hard to take the lead from one another, with the scoreline changing every minute switching in favour of either side.  Wales were ahead by two goals after the first quarter, until Barbados equalised early in the second.  It was a game of ‘tug of war’ throughout the rest of the match as both sides gained momentum only to be interrupted by the opposition.
In the final quarter, Wales charged ahead with a 30-24 lead.  However, Barbados refused to take the hit and levelled the score at 30-30 with some quick goals.  Barbados found their confidence and led in the final quarter but Wales would not relent and recovered again to move 45-41 ahead. Wales held their composure and battled hard to steal the lead and the win from Barbados.  Final score: 47-44 to Wales.

Wales U21 to Face Hosts Botswana at Netball World Youth Cup.
Wales’ under 21 netball squad will face Netball World Youth Cup hosts, Botswana at their 9th to 16th placing quarter final match on Thursday at 5pm GMT.
Today’s game will decide whether Wales will secure a place in the 9th to 16th place semi-final, or the 13th to 16th semi-final.
Tumblr media
Despite an impressive victory of 72-30 over Grenada on Monday (10 July), Wales were left disappointed after losing 32-36 to Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.
Head Coach Natalie Peperell continues to work on her squad’s game plan and says that they will come fighting back to finish 9th in the world:
“Tuesday wasn’t our best day – the pressure got to us a little bit and we crumbled.
“But the best thing about this Welsh squad is their fighting spirit, and we’re going to come back fighting.
“So we hit the training court hard yesterday to rectify the wrongs and to get ready for the next game, because we’re going to fight for that 9th place.”
If Wales win today’s match they will go through to the 9th to 12th place semi-final on Friday, 13 July. If Wales lose, they will compete for a 13th to 16th placing.
“It will be a tough game against Botswana in front of their roaring home crowd” says Peperell.
“We just need to keep our composure and play our own game, and make sure we deliver our best performance.”
Wales began their World Cup campaign on Saturday 8 July in Pool D, and have played against England, Fiji, Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago.

Wales To Play Own Game Against Caribbean team Trinidad & Tobago.
Wales U21 face Trinidad and Tobago today at 3pm in their final pool match of the Netball World Youth Cup, 2017 [NWYC2017].
Tumblr media
After winning yesterday’s match with an impressive 72-30 defeat over Grenada, Wales Head Coach Natalie Peperell said the team are feeling positive about their next challenge:
“We will take the positives from yesterday’s game into our final pool match against Trinidad & Tobago.
“They play a similar Caribbean style so we will stick to our own game plan and processes by using our speed and quick ball to penetrate space and get the ball to goal.”
All Wales U21 squad members took the court yesterday with young players Bethan Johnson, a student at Brynteg Comprehensive School and Georgia Jenkins from Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg, giving stand out performances.
“Bethan Johnson had a really strong performance at WA for a full 60 minutes.
“Georgia Jenkins won her second cap for Wales yesterday and gave us a stand out performance at Goal Shooter – she scored fifteen goals in 15 minutes.
“With both athletes only 17 years old, the future looks bright for these stars.”

Celtic Flames Relish Success at New Zealand Super Club Debut.
The Celtic Flames have returned home to Wales after a successful trip to New Zealand for the first ever global Super Club netball competition.  Representing the northern hemisphere, the Celtic Flames finished in fifth place ahead of all other international invited teams outside Australia and New Zealand.
Tumblr media
The Celtic Flames were formed just weeks prior to the brand new global Super Club competition and claimed victory over the teams from Fiji, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago.  Comprised of mostly Wales and Celtic Dragons stars, the Welsh based Celtic Flames beat the Gauteng Jaguars – the South African netball premier league 2017 champions.  The Flames also dominated their match against Fiji’s Marama Vou team, which consists of several Fijian international players, who are currently 7th to Wales’ 8th in the international netball rankings.
Each Super Club team also enjoyed an allocated Community Day during the competition.  The Celtic Flames athletes met young netball fans from the Nelson community whilst visiting one of the area’s most scenic spots at Abel Tasman National Park.
Tumblr media
The Wales international players will benefit hugely from the exposure to international competition as they prepare for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, April 2018. Welsh Netball CEO Sarah Jones said the 5th placing is a great benchmark for the Wales players involved, and will assist with preparations for their Gold Coast 2018 campaign.
“This was a fantastic opportunity and the squad embraced every moment of it.  They not only learned and improved but also came home with three wins out of five.
“This was a brave move to put these players in to a global environment, with daily Sky broadcasting, competing with some of the world’s best. This was about learning and growing and everyone present has done that over the last ten days.
“Huge congratulations to Head Coach Trish Wilcox and the team for a successful week, and big thanks and congratulations to Nelson and Netball New Zealand for a successful inaugural Super Club.
“We’d also like to thank Sport Wales for their support, and to all the players’ sponsors who were behind our athletes every step of the way,” said Sarah Jones.

“Girls we are really proud of you both” - Netball mum Helen Dyke has high hopes for her daughters.
Mother of two Wales international netball stars Helen Dyke from Bridgend is about to fly to Gaborone, Botswana to support her youngest daughter Chloe Dyke as she represents Wales at under 21 level at the Netball World Youth Cup 2017.  Meanwhile, her eldest daughter Bethan, who also plays for the superleague team the Celtic Dragons, is playing at the brand new Super Club competition in New Zealand, with the Celtic Flames.
It’s a busy time for the Dyke family, so we wanted to know how it felt to be a mum of two such successful elite athletes.  And does she miss them when they go away?
***********************************************************
How does it feel to have two daughters playing at the highest standard of netball in Botswana and New Zealand at the same time?
I feel extremely proud of what they have achieved and excited for the opportunities to travel the world with great friends, playing the sport they love.
As their mum, do you get nervous when they go away to play?  Do you miss them? Do you keep in touch while they’re away? Yes, naturally I do get nervous for any International or Superleague game they play. I do miss them but on the other hand when they leave my house is finally tidy!  In all seriousness, my girls have always been away from a young age with their netball careers, and of course living away at University.  So I suppose I’m a little used to it.  We make an effort to keep in touch – we speak regularly on the family whatsapp group or we FaceTime.
Tumblr media
You’re off to Botswana to support – are you excited?  I'm really excited to go to Botswana to see how it compares to how Glasgow staged the tournament.  If the reception the girls received on their arrival is anything to go by it will be a huge success.  There are a number of parents going so I'm sure we will make plenty of noise showing our support on match day.
How would you describe Beth and Chloe’s characters?  They’re both often described as ‘pocket rockets’ – would you agree? Beth and Chloe are like chalk and cheese! Beth is so organised, methodical and precise with her preparations. Clo is far more laid back in her approach to everything, but gets the same results. I don't see them as similar players, but they both have great determination.
Are they close as sisters? They are close but do have their moments like most sisters. They’re both competitive but very supportive especially when they are both away from home.
Tumblr media
Did you ever imagine they’d get this far in their netball careers? No I didn't. As youngsters both girls had talent but that's only 50% of what it takes to get to this level. The fact they have achieved so much is down to the hard work they have put in, and the hard work that the coaches that they have both been fortunate to have over their playing years.
How were they introduced to netball? They loved to come and watch me train in Bridgend so as soon as they were old enough they started playing in Litchard Junior School, then joined Penybont Dragons and progressed on from there.
Tumblr media
What’s your netball story?  I have played netball since primary school and through to ladies’ leagues.  When the girls started playing I helped out with umpiring and coaching. I'm a qualified B umpire and a Level 2 coach. We are a very active family – their dad Richard is currently training for Ironman Wales. We are both members of local cycling and running clubs. We don't often get to do activities with the girls, other than our yearly ski holiday which we all love.
With all the training hours and the amount of dedication expected of the girls at this elite level – what advice would you give other mums whose     daughters are aspiring netball stars? Be prepared for ups and downs. Just be there to listen and support when they need to off load. If they ask your opinion about their performances always be honest as it will keep them grounded. Encourage them to learn from all their experiences - good or bad.
Tumblr media
Do you have a good luck message for Beth and Chloe?
Girls we are really proud of you both, enjoy every minute and make the most of these fantastic opportunities. Play with pride and passion and a big smile on your face. Love you both, Mum & Dad.

LA Hub End of Season Showcases 2017.
Each region held its annual End of Season showcase of all the Local Authority Hubs across the country.  Here’s how your Netball Development Officers had to say about the events.
Central South Wales - Sarah Palmer.
This year’s LA hub programme has seen many changes, namely the increase in the number of LA hubs operating across the Central South region, as well as the combining of Cardiff and Vale and Glamorgan Valleys to fall in line with Welsh Netball’s strategic plan creating a Central South region. This season also saw newly formed coaching sessions for our LA hub workforce with a particular focus on skill development. It was lovely to see the time and effort put in from workforce and players alike in the recent Central South LA Hub showcase tournament, where players displayed a great skill set. The pathway most definitely seems to be working and I look forward to seeing many of these players continue their development within the Welsh Netball pathway for years to come.
“Amazing netball displayed by Central South LA Hub teams on the weekend… A great day 😊” – Bridgend U13 LA Hub Coach
“Privileged to play a part in their development, togetherness on and off the court. #Fabgirls” – Cardiff U13 LA Hub Coach
iIcredibly proud of how far these girls have come! It has been a pleasure to coach them and watch them grow!” – Cardiff U11’s Coach
“Fabulous day of netball today. The girls worked hard and performed incredibly well. The atmosphere was fantastic! Relaxed, inclusive and rewarding. Thank you for giving my daughter, Ffion such a fabulous opportunity throughout the year. Rachel has been amazing with the RCT LA Hub girls”.
“It has been an absolute pleasure coaching U13 & U15 Vale LA Hub this year. I have coached some of these girls since U11 LA Hub, so watching them grow as players & young ladies has been a real privilege”. - Vale U13 and U15 LA hub Coach
South East Wales: Claire Joll.
On Saturday 17th June 2017 at Ebbw Vale Leisure centre, the first South East regional LA HUB showcase was held. The aim of the showcase was to ‘encourage the skill development from across the season and showcase the player’s talent’. The showcase provided the opportunity for the region to come together and celebrate the players’ development, no scores were kept or celebrated throughout the day.
DTC head coach Coach-Aimee Phillips came along to see the girls, as hopefully some of the girls will progress on to DTC/PTC next season.
"‘I was thoroughly impressed with the organisation and smooth running of the tournament. The players were enthusiastic and clearly enjoying playing in the tournament. The support was excellent by coaches, parents and umpires and a real credit to the area. I was enlightened to see that there was not over emphasis on winning as I feel that players were encouraged to demonstrate the skills they have developed rather that tactics to beat the opposition.”
Throughout the day 250 girls took part in the showcase. The girls ranged from 9 to 15 years old. It was amazing to see many players not only taking part but enjoying the day and experiencing their first part of the Welsh Netball pathway. Support from friends & family was overwhelming with most court areas full.
The day was split into 3 sections, starting off at 8.30am with u11s. With 6 teams and having two courts the u11s had the opportunity to play everyone. We then moved onto u13s, with 10 teams it was decided that everyone would play everyone except playing their own team i.e. Newport V Newport. We then finished the day with u15s, with 7 teams involved the same format as u11s was used.
After each age group, a presentation was held whereby all players received a signed certificate from Welsh Player Nia Jones and had a team photo.
The following local authority HUB’s took part:
 Torfaen 2x u11 2x u13
 Blaenau Gwent 1x u11 2x u13 2x u15
Caerphilly 2x u13 2x u15
Newport 2x u13 1x u15
Monmouth 3x u11 2xu13 2x u15
North Wales: Abbie Kelsall
The LA Hub showcase for North Wales was held on the first weekend of June.  The U11s, U13s and U15s from Gwynedd and Angelsey, Conwy, Flintshire, and Wrexham all had the opportunity to play within the squads that they have trained with since November 2016.
There was a brilliant showcase of the skills the players had been developing in their session and the tournament was a rewarding opportunity for the coaces to see their players put in to practice the essential skills that they had been teaching them.
I’m already looking forward to seeing the development of all the players on their Welsh Netball journey.
Mid&West Wales: Hannah Pick The U11 LA Hub showcase was held nn Saturday the 10th of June 2017.  Four LA Hubs with 7 teams competed for the very first time, including Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.  Every squad had been newly formed in October 2016 with new workforce and players.  New umpires also helped and developed their skills on the day.
The U13 LA Hub showcase was held on the same day in the afternoon.  For the first time, an additional team from Powys also took part.  Five LA Hubs with 10 teams demonstrated their newly learned skills, along with the support of new faces within the workforces and umpires.
The day went really well and I am so proud of my region’s professional manner and the support that came from the parents and guardians.  You created a superb atmosphere.
The next day, we held the U15 LA Hub showcase.  The event saw Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot take part with 8 teams in total.  All players brought a very high standard of play to the court with one memorable game for me was between NPT A v Carms A.  A big thank you to the coaches, managers and umpires who made the day possible.
A special thanks goes to Jan Richards and Claire Howells for mentoring umpires over the two days.  And, as always, Wendy Pressdee for keeping us all on track.  Can’t wait til next year!

BREAKING NEWS  Tactix players join Celtic Flames for Netball New Zealand’s Super Club.
The newly formed Celtic Flames will welcome Anna Thompson and Temalisi Fakahokotau, both from Silvermoon Tactix as their final players in their squad of twelve.
As with VNSL, NNZ Super Club rules allow for teams to include international players in their squad. Thompson and Fakahokotau will join the Flames directly from their ANZ season and Head coach Trish Wilcox is planning on integrating both players quickly into their new team. “The team are excited to have Anna and Temalisi complete our squad. Both players bring international and ANZ experience to the team which will complement the Celtic Flames squad. I am looking forward to working with Anna and Temalisi to utilise their strengths within the team as we challenge the opposition from across the globe.”
Anna Thompson made her Silver Ferns debut in 2009 after stepping up from the NWYC gold-medal winning NZU21 team. A true utility player, Thompson covers WA, GA and GS bringing great diversity along with her experience. Temalisi Fakahokotau debuted for the Silver Ferns in 2014 and made the move to Tactix this year following three seasons with the Northern Mystics. Impressive athleticism and natural talent make Fakahokotau a formidable defender.
The Super Club event will be held at the 1662-seat capacity Trafalgar Centre and all games will be broadcast live on SKY Sport 4.  The Celtic Flames have been drawn into Pool B with two of these qualifying ANZ teams, and Marama Vou from Fiji.

Competition Review-  Initial Findings and Update.
In early 2017 the NGB commissioned an independent Competitions Pathway Review. The review reached out to the Welsh Netball membership in order to gain views and feedback on the current competition structure and take recommendations for any improvements.
Four regional focus groups were conducted with key netball stakeholders . These groups were designed to gain honest and current reflection on the existing competition structure. Semi-structured interviews were also carried out with Welsh Netball staff focusing on four key aspects of competitions: Quantity, Resource, Quality and Challenges.  The results from the review show the collective opinions of key stakeholders who completed a survey or attended a forum. The independent review collated data into key themes which were consistently mentioned and therefore highlight the key findings for areas of improvement:
Fair selection and equality
Governance and engagement
Regulations
Priority calendar
Talent development focus
Inclusive pathway
Workforce development
The purpose of gaining feedback was to identify recommendations and actions moving forward based on the results.
Welsh Netball are fully committed to the needs of the membership and the sport and as such will begin to examine the more in-depth recommendations that will shape the future of the competitions landscape. Our intention is to secure a fit for purpose structure which is clear and has long term sustainability. As such we will look to minimise any potential impact on our netball stakeholders for the coming 2017/18 season.
Any immediate changes for the 2017/18 season will be communicated ahead of the new season. These will be small operational changes and not major structural shifts in the landscape as it currently stands.
While a full timeline of all the changes to be made will be released in due course, the following actions have been identified as key starting points for significant change in readiness for the 2018/19 season:
Introduce a National Competitions Steering Group to provide strategic direction and operational support to the delivery of competition in Wales.  Terms of reference and make up of the group to be created, shared, appointed and scheduled
Introducing a Welsh Netball governance framework in alignment with INF regulations  for the operation of competitions from Regional to National level. For clarity this is not intended to apply to domestic leagues.
Explore and encourage     potential partnerships for the delivery of competitions.
Promote a talent     development focus throughout the pathway and organisation.
Publish a holistic     national and performance competition calendar.
Further actions and information will be communicated with a timeline as soon as practical. We thank each member for their time and input during the review process. We are aware that further discussions will be required and support and input will be welcomed.
