"you dont have to visit a national forest to appreciate nature! the weeds growing up through the sidewalk and native shrubbery in the hedgerow count, too" and "most wildlife needs large, intact swaths of native habitat in order to literally not go extinction" are not mutually exclusive, BUT i have started to become concerned over the complacency the first perspective might be enabling.

maybe a hot take, but i think you SHOULD be bothered by being surrounded by square miles of concrete and steel with no sizeable wildlife habitat within a hundred miles. it's damning countless wildlife and plant species to a slow descent into extinction. plus it's normal for us - as animals - to want to be in a more natural setting, tbh
