Westerville Central’s long winning streak in its series against Westerville North, which resumes Aug. 19 at Central, isn’t something that’s on the mind of first-year Warhawks coach Ed Miley. Central has beaten the Warriors in 12 consecutive games — including 14-7 a year ago — since the Warriors won the first matchup in 2008.

Moments after the Westerville North baseball team won its first district championship in 34 years, Aiden Dickinson thought about the Warriors’ time inside the school as well as their efforts on the field.
ā€œIt’s just something we’ve dreamed of. We’ve brought it up in classroom sessions,ā€ said Dickinson, a junior second baseman and pitcher. ā€œWe have a board where we write our goals, and this is the latest one we had to check off. (My teammates) have helped me all the way through.ā€

George Crooks decorates his math classroom at Westerville South with wrestling memorabilia.Ā  He loves the sport, but sayingĀ it was time for a change, Crooks has stepped down as coach of the Wildcats, ending his second tenure with the program.Ā  ā€œI thought about it all year long,ā€ he said. ā€œThe main reason is I just can’t get kids. I just have to step away and hopefully the next group can get some kids and get things going again. You want people there, you want to do well and you want to have a good team and I just couldn’t get it together. That’s the bottom line.ā€Ā
