Central, South ready to resume Westerville rivalry

After a two-year hiatus, Westerville Central and Westerville South will resume their rivalry with both teams coming off Week 1 wins that had far different endings.Ā The Wildcats controlled play for most of a 30-7 win Aug. 19 over Olentangy in a game played at Westerville North as a field-renovation project at South was nearing completion.Ā Meanwhile, Central pulled off a hook-and-lateral for a touchdown on the final play to beat North 23-20 win.Ā

Westerville South 30, Olentangy 7 South quarterback Dominic Birtha was so excited after hitting Preston Penn over the top for a 74-yard touchdown, he cramped up running down the field to join the celebration.

Westerville Centralās long winning streak in its series against Westerville North, which resumes Aug. 19 at Central, isnāt something thatās on the mind of first-year Warhawks coach Ed Miley. Central has beaten the Warriors in 12 consecutive games ā including 14-7 a year ago ā since the Warriors won the first matchup in 2008.

Hyatt (6-2, 203) signed with the Wildcats in 2020 after a standout career for Westerville Central High School in Westerville, OH, where he was rated a three-star player (.8647 out of a 1.000 scale) by the 247Sports Composite ranking system. As a senior he was named first-team all-district, second-team All-OCC-Buckeye Division and third-team all-state by the Ohio Sportswriters Association. He also starred om the track team, finishing third in the state meets in the 300 meter hurdles (38.15 seconds), the indoor long jump (21'8") and the indoor 60 hurdles as a junior. We was unable to compete in the state track competition as a senior when it was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Moments after the Westerville North baseball team won its first district championship in 34 years, Aiden Dickinson thought about the Warriorsā time inside the school as well as their efforts on the field.
āItās just something weāve dreamed of. Weāve brought it up in classroom sessions,ā said Dickinson, a junior second baseman and pitcher. āWe have a board where we write our goals, and this is the latest one we had to check off. (My teammates) have helped me all the way through.ā

With several underclassmen leading the way, the Westerville Central girls track and field team posted the best finish in program history at the Division I state meet June 3 and 4 at Ohio State.
The Warhawks scored 31 points to finish second behind Gahanna (47).

Westerville City Schools has chosen Dawn Sayre, current district director of Career and College Pathways, to lead in the principal role at Westerville Central High School, pending June 13 board approval.
Sayre joined the district last year from the Hilliard City School District.
Westerville Superintendent John Kellogg sent a message to district staff June 3, announcing Sayre had been selected to lead the school beginning next academic year.

The Westerville North baseball teamās chance at the OCC-Capital Division championship comes down to five league games, with the first coming against the team it is chasing.
At 11-5 overall and 8-1 in the league, the Warriors are scheduled to play host to Canal Winchester on May 5. That is the completion of a game that was suspended April 25, with North leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second.

Stating āitās time,ā Ed Calo has retired asĀ Westerville South boys basketball coach after 35 seasons.Ā
Ā āI went back and forth on it, I just labored on it for a long time and had discussions with the people I love,ā he said April 29. āIt was a tremendously difficult decision because itās been part of my life for so long. I enjoyed it so much, but there are reasons, obviously. I thought it would be a decent time because thereās a lot here still.āĀ Ā

George Crooks decorates his math classroom at Westerville South with wrestling memorabilia.Ā He loves the sport, but sayingĀ it was time for a change, Crooks has stepped down as coach of the Wildcats, ending his second tenure with the program.Ā āI thought about it all year long,ā he said. āThe main reason is I just canāt get kids. I just have to step away and hopefully the next group can get some kids and get things going again. You want people there, you want to do well and you want to have a good team and I just couldnāt get it together. Thatās the bottom line.āĀ

Westerville Central baseball coach Jeff Keifer reached a career milestone April 23 against a fitting opponent.Ā
Keifer earned his 300th career win with a 10-0 victory in five innings at Westerville North.Ā Ā
In his 13th season at Central, Keifer began his head-coaching career in 2003 at North. He also graduated from North inĀ 1986.

As the Westerville South softball team continues to battleĀ injuries, senior Kayti Williams has filled in at multiple positions and provided leadership while also leading the Wildcats offensively.Ā Ā
Ā āI know a lot of the younger girls really just want to play, so Iām not necessarily taking them under my wings, but Iām definitely giving them all the advice and knowledge I know,ā Williams said. āI like that challenge. I want to see all these girls succeed.āĀ
