it’s so disconcerting being a person and so difficult to take myself seriously as one that if I were revealed to be an alien in human disguise I wouldn’t even be surprised

Hi! I was wondering if you had any tips on how to work on a good posture. When I play the violin I’m just so tense so my left hand and shoulders especially just ache which hurts not only those areas but also my stamina and tone. How can I work on posture?
it’s kind of hard to say what the problem is without seeing you play, so here are some theories I have. fix whatever applies to you:
1. your left hand might be tense if you’re trying to hold up your violin with it. maybe adjust your shoulder rest and see if that alleviates a bit of pressure. alternatively, if you don’t have a shoulder rest, you probably need a shoulder rest
2. if your wrist touches the bottom of the neck when you’re playing in first position, that’s also a sign that you’re holding on too tightly and that can be fixed by putting space between your wrist and the neck.
3. you might be trying to compensate for a lack of sound with pressure from your left hand. some violinists have a tendency to press down much harder with their left hand fingers when they’re playing forte, but that’s really not necessary and creates unwanted tension
4. make sure your back is straight when you’re playing and that your violin isn’t pointing downwards
other things that might help: taking more practice breaks, asking/getting a teacher to show you what’s wrong, pressing down your left hand fingers with slightly less force, or even calming down before you practice

things I’ve said to my students
I teach little kids piano and these are some of the things I tell them and they seem to think I’m funny
“woah there buddy”
“be expressive, not aggressive”
“play staccato like you would play hot potato”
“yikes”
student: “why does posture matter?” me: “look at my hands when I’m playing with flat fingers. doesn’t that look weird? it looks kind of disturbing. don’t have flat fingers.” student: “you’re right”
“no no no don’t do that you’ll break your hand”
me: “what chord is this?” student: “g major. but can we name it carlos?” me: “…I don’t see why not”
“the man on my screensaver is dmitri shostakovich and you will learn to love his music, too”
“yeah this guy wrote angry music”
“we’re going to play this excruciatingly slowly. suffering is how we make progress”
me: “so a harp is basically just a naked piano.” my student: “so, you could say that inside a piano are the piano’s…organs.”
*miscellaneous sound effects and screeches*
*badly singing along as they play*
“composers were crazy. don’t ever let anyone tell you that mozart was sophisticated because he told some very bad jokes.”
me: “what interval is that?” student: “EL DIABLO”
“it’s going to sound bad, but that means you’re playing it right”
“please don’t play the piano with your elbows. you can try that at home”
“so the music says that it should be an f sharp but you played it as an f natural and I kind of liked that so we’re keeping it”
”if you can play this well I’ll accompany you with my plastic saxophone”
