Britt Lower is actually insane.

I'm rewatching Woe's Hollow and that's just Helena. She isn't even pretending to be Helly anymore. Her deep voice when she says "I just wish I knew where we were going" is the same way she talks to Mark at Zufu. The way Helena acts here is also very different to Helena™, she's more relaxed and less performative.

So Britt plays not only Helly, Helena™ and Helena pretending to be Helly but also Helena when she thinks Lumon is not watching.

i love how helena is supposed to hold all the power but between her and helly, she’s the one who hesitates. she sits and waits for things to happen and barely ever makes the first move.

helly is all bite all the time. it’s a completely understandable reaction to a fucked up environment where compliance is tantamount to godliness. she’s goes after what she wants without any hesitation. helena only ever seems to act as a last resort: helly is an unstoppable ball of rebellion and helena talks down to her in hopes it will quell the fire. irving catches on to the charade and she goes for a low blow to shut him up. lumon bans her from going to the severed floor and she tries to argue that innies are animals and she needs to be down there. even in a romantic context, nothing happens before the ortbo because mark is used to helly iniating.

the demure, buttoned up performance helena lives in is literally contrary to her nature. she apologizes to milchick before going to the severed floor because she knows herself. helena has contorted into the perfect eagan but at her core she lacks belief. it makes zufu all the more interesting. mark is the one tether she has to the life she wants to live. she’s channeling helly with her look and her actions. her hair is down, she’s confident and charismatic. she’s leading the conversation. she’s initiating.

you could argue that it’s just another layer of deception, but i think it’s more than that: desire brings out the best in helena. or rather, desire is fundamental to who she is. as per britt lower, helly is “pure consciousness”. she’s exactly who she wants to be all the time. helena bottled up her own wants in hopes of being a better steward of lumon. if she followed her true desires, she wouldn’t be able to stomach the reality of being an eagan. at her core, she wants to run. helly’s existence proves that. after years of successfully neglecting herself, briefly visiting the severed floor reawakened that yearning. she wants to exist on her own terms and she wants to be with mark. actually pursuing something made that fire undeniable. helena is helly. at zufu we’re finally seeing that part of her rise to the surface.
