In Medusa’s Defense is a hardcover, cut-and-fold snake book. I go through it pretty quickly in this video but it’s meant to be slowly figured out and pondered. I wanted to re-think Medusa’s story a bit with more consideration for her perspective. Thanks for watching!!!

Behold, my first ever bookbinding! The fic is and as he fell (you walked away), by the amazing and wonderful @tea-with-veth

This project was done at the start of June 2022, and was made to be a gift for Tea, since she was visiting me and I wanted to do something cool for her.

Since it was my first project, and because I only did it in a week, I had to make up a bunch of stuff. For example, I ended up just using a family members printer. Which, while much cheaper, also meant I only had pure white paper. Still very proud of how it turned out though!

Bound: a wee chonk

I am a big fan of @moonflower-rose’s fics. No one does pining as well. And this duo of fics, the Summer 2009 series is just gorgeously written. I wanted to practice making tiny books, and these were the first fics I thought of. They’re a good length for this size bind - 12k and 20k. And because they go together, I thought it’d be fun to make them as a tete beche. (Dunno if I’m using that correctly. Is it “in the tete beche style”? Or is it a “tete beche”? Not quite sure.) Anyhoo, the point is, you can read the Harry POV from one end (Poppiholla) and the Draco POV from the other (Hoppípolla).

I’m glad I made this, not just because I adore the fics, but also because I learned a lot while doing so. (Wider margins!) I wasn’t about to let this lil peanut near my big bad guillotine, so I sanded the edges instead. Not a ton, but just enough to smooth them out a bit. I need to work on my patience while sanding.

In any case, I’m thrilled with how it came out. The book cloth (Dubletta in aqua/purple) is just beautiful, I’m so glad I kept this scrap of it! And the holographic HTV goes with it perfectly. (Some Cricut stuff I got on clearance.)

For @theladydrgn and @sylwritesstuff, editions of their wonderful Heyer inspired Sunday’s Child. I had trouble deciding on colors, and was originally going to go with blue and pink for ladydragona’s, but I liked the dark blue on blue much better. Hope you like it.

Alone At Christmas? (MDZS)

Well. This is certainly a thing I just did.

Alone At Christmas? by @captain-apostrophe is a modern AU where A-Qing hires Xue Yang to freak out her family, but then it turns out her dads are super hot...

Fast forward a few months and I got the brilliant(?) idea to do a decorative stab binding, which is (originally) a traditional Asian bookbinding technique. There are many beautiful variations on it, so I figured, as I do, why not make it dicks? Why not make it three dicks? And what better story to do it with?

(yes, technically there are six dicks, but there are two stories so it's really three dicks per fic)

In combination with this ridiculous design, I decided to embrace both the Christmas theme and Xue Yang's trashiness and use Duo Pepperoni for the bookcloth, and some very, very interesting marbled endpapers we've nicknamed salami sandwich.

The typeset was lovingly made for me by @three--rings in the 2023 typesetting exchange. She preserved the ridiculousness as well as all of the author's hilarious Santa photos (which, WOW, that is a whole thing!).

I'm very happy to have this in my possession! Thank you @three--rings for the typeset, and thank you @captain-apostrophe for making me laugh for a good couple weeks after reading this. :D

public libraries are so sick. there are five books I want to read and they're all relatively new so they're only available in hardback which is so expensive but it just cost me $0 to place holds on them. five books for zero dollars. it requires nothing but clicking a button and then going to the library to pick them up when they're ready. zero dollars. that's crazy

I felt that the long title lends itself wonderfully to a typography heavy cover - but I decided to jumble it all up a bit to mirror Draco's slightly confused state of heart and mind in this story.

Here is my bind for @no-name-publishing in a Renegade Mini-Exchange! This is such a wistful and tender story about learning to accept and love yourself, even when you feel unlovable, and I was absolutely ecstatic when I peeped it on his wishlist.

Lots of firsts for me this bind: first time working with leather, first time CHISEL-TRIMMING (:elmo fire emoji: insert here please), only second time power sanding (which I love tbh), first time BEADING a cover. I absolutely loved working with leather and the effect of beading, and wish I could take a video to show how sparkly the beads are in the sunlight! I also used ~ * f a n c y * ~ endpapers by Claire Guillot that I just knew I had to have for this bind the second I saw them, and will absolutely be returning to her for future binds.

All the typesetting choices are inspired by the 1611 King James Bible, as well as the beading which forms a cross when the book is fully opened. It's my first Supernatural bind—what's a girl to do besides make Biblical references? (jk, @clovenhoofbindery made a totally non-Biblical bind of the same fic and I have been LOSING MY MIND at how perfect and gorgeous it is)

remember when i mentioned i’d taken up bookbinding? well, i finished binding people will say we’re in love by @takethegrasskara and i’m so happy with how it turned out, i wanted to show off a little. i wasn’t sure i’d be able to pull it off, since it’s significantly longer than my first attempt at binding, but honestly? i’m obsessed. and now one of my favorite fics gets to live on my bookshelf forever!

Halfway through reading Dear Your Holiness by MollyMaryMarie for the first time, I knew it was going to be one of those fics that I read over and over and over again so it’s no surprise that it’s the one I chose for my very first bind!

@mollymarymarie thank you for creating such a masterpiece, I’m obsessed 🤩

Everyone in the bookbinding community has been so nice to me so far but I really wanted to give a huge shout-out to @vellichorbindery for sharing this gorgeous typeset with me and being so kind!!

Since this was my first bind, I definitely made some mistakes and learned a lot but I’m so proud with how the finished product turned out!

Fic: Foxcatcher

This book kicked my fucking ass. I had, in fact, FINISHED THE BOOK before I was flipping through it and discovered heinous errors in the typeset, so I threw it aside and remade it from top to bottom. The cover is Mongara-ori "olive crackle" which is a joy to work with - it's beautiful, and it FOILS beautifully. The endpapers are Lokta in a "curry" shade that I found on Etsy. I had finished case assembly just after midnight two days before I was supposed to give this book to Laszlo and I was staring at those bound hands like "HMMM.... what if I ACTUALLY BOUND THE HANDS...." and pulled out my trusty screw punch. Why not! Sometimes art demands some do or die!!

Anyway the first copy is garbo but the second edition is legit the nicest book I have ever made. Enjoy it queen, you deserve it <3

Book #23! A second edition of Wish You Were Here! in Flieder Duo, because the lavender/grey/pink tones perfectly match these sunrise endpapers. Part of the fun was loading up this ancient typeset and fixing some stuff from before I knew what I was doing, like getting rid of the page numbers on chapter title pages. For my beloved @yuujoh !

I painted this Rapunzel notebook a little while ago! It was meant to be a “simple” design… but I can never do “simple.” I used paint markers, looked at a ton of Claire Keane and Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure reference, and did a looooot of sketching to bring this journal to life. And I couldn’t be happier with the result! Read below the cut for my process!
