there's no greater betrayal than finally starting to read a book you've had sitting for months on your shelf or your desk or your nightstand and then finding out it's bad. like. i gave you a fucking home.

For the purposes of this poll, audiobooks and ebooks count as reading.
There's no judgement behind this question; anon doesn't read either. They're just curious about others' reasons.

I bet after Aragorn became king he would continue to be Just Some Chill As Fuck Dude. You go to the market and there’s the king of Gondor. Buying turnips.

It's PLR payment season in Canada, and I want to talk a little bit about the program, how it came to be, and its impact on Canadian authors' lives!
Tumblr media
BEAR by Marian Engel is one of Canada’s most controversial novels. Its original cover circulates periodically online accompanied by headlines like “WTF is going on in Canada.” It won the 1975 Governor General’s award. And yes, it is about what you think it’s about. It’s genuinely a really good book that wholly deserved to win one of Canada’s prestigious literary awards. But most people aren’t aware of the extent of Engel’s legacy beyond this book’s salacious reputation.
If you're an author in Canada, every February you get a payment from something called the Public Lending Right program. It's an amazing initiative that compensates authors for the use of their works in public libraries. And it has an interesting connection to BEAR.
Tumblr media
Engel was a founding member of the Writer’s Union of Canada, and hosted early meetings of the organization in her home. She was a serious champion of the rights of writers, and was a major player in developing and instigating the Public Lending Right. She’s one of the reasons Canadian authors get a (not insignificant) payment every February. She died really young—basically mid-career—at the age of 51. But what a legacy to leave behind.
The program is one of the many reasons why I love to encourage people to make sure their library carries my book, and it genuinely makes a big difference in my life. Being an author is financially difficult. It’s an industry that really relies on the passion tax. But the PLR program helps with that. So the next time you see the truly wild cover of BEAR, remember that the author, Marian Engel, made a huge difference in how authors are able to make a living from their art in Canada.

Took me until about halfway through college before I realized “study” means “play with the material in a variety of ways until you understand it” and not just “read the assigned chapters and do the homework” and I think that probably should have been discussed at some point prior to that.
