On a very basic level, you are what you remember â your very identity depends on all of the events, people and places you can recall. Improving your memory will help you develop a quicker, more accurate retrieval of information that will increase your intelligence. Sharpening your short-term or âworkingâ memory requires concentration. For instance, study four unrelated words for 15 seconds, then set an alarm for five minutes. Pay attention to another activity until the alarm sounds. Then try to remember the words. As you get better, change and add to the number of words and increase the amount of time. You can do similar exercises with numbers, visual designs, spoken words or even try to recount the scenes of a television show you just watched.

Have you ever heard the wonderful silence just before the dawn? Or the quiet and calm just as a storm ends? Or perhaps you know the silence when you havenât the answer to a question youâve been asked, or the hush of a country road at night, or the expectant pause of a room full of people when someone is just about to speak, or, most beautiful of all, the moment after the door closes and youâre alone in the whole house? Each one is different, you know, and all very beautiful if you listen carefully.

I will reblog this quote until I have it memorized. I need to read it every day.

So hereâs something I know to be true, although itâs a little corny, and I donât quite know what to do with it: What I regret most in my life are failures of kindness. Those moments when another human being was there, in front of me, suffering, and I respondedâŚsensibly. Reservedly. Mildly. Or, to look at it from the other end of the telescope: Who, in your life, do you remember most fondly, with the most undeniable feelings of warmth? Those who were kindest to you, I bet. Itâs a little facile, maybe, and certainly hard to implement, but Iâd say, as a goal in life, you could do worse than: Try to be kinder.
In his absolutely fantastic Syracuse commencement address on the immense value of kindness, George Saunders echoes Albert Einstein and adds to this yearâs most memorable graduation speeches, including Debbie Millman on courage and the creative life, Greil Marcus on the false divide between âhigh" and âlow" culture, Arianna Huffington on success, Joss Whedon on embracing our inner contradictions, Oprah Winfrey on failure and finding your purpose, and Judith Butler on the value of reading and the humanities. Charting The Great Gatsby â a chapter-by-chapter breakdown by Pop Chart Lab, who have previously charted the visual evolution of cameras, the varieties of coffee, the history of Apple, Americaâs bike lanes, the composition of classic cocktails, the wonders of serif fonts, Gothamâs villains, and the 64 guitars that defined rock history.
The best thing since Kerouacâs On The Road, visualized.

I really love how the writing in Breaking Bad so thoroughly understands the importance of earning the payoff that I can post a bunch of shit from the show that spoils absolutely nothing but are some of the most upsetting/stressful images ever if the context happens to exist for you
Whoever said American TV is inherently substandard is a total fucking dingdong
