himiko ached for a busy crowd, music loud enough to shake the dust off their bones. but at some point, the crowd became too much, too similar to eyes watching them rather than just strangers in a crowd. perhaps their encounter with cody had gotten more under their skin than they realized, put them more on edge for the other show to finally drop.

they stepped out of the club into the cool night and took their first steady breath of the night as they dug around in their bag for a cigarette and their lighter. shit. they glanced around, eyes falling on a person beside them. " i was honestly just going to ask for a light, " they said, holding up their cigarette as if it held all the reasoning required. " must've left my lighter at the office. would you mind? "

the only reason she'd agreed to this was because jake was at a sleepover. one of her co-workers had suggested they go out that weekend. jo had assumed she'd meant out to dinner or to a movie or something, but when her colleague had given a mischievous smile and suggested this club, jo knew that the younger crowd had assumed she'd turn them down. but joanna torress didn't back down, not even from younger professors and their clubs.

but the drink she'd ordered had been far too sweet, the lighting too harsh, and the music was giving her a headache. so she'd slipped away when the others had gone to the bathroom and escaped into the cool night air, where she instantly reached into her bag for a cigarette and her lighter. she took a couple of drags and felt muscles begin to relax at once. was she too old for this? as a group of college kids who could have been her students tramped across the street and into the line to get into the club, jo realized that she might be too old for this. as she was contemplating this, she felt someone's eyes on her and turned to throw them a look. "what?" she took another drag. "did you want one?"

himiko's face contorted, twisting into a look of contempt. yes, perhaps they had crossed a line, one that they had been on the other side of for years. as far as they were concerned, the girl was merely a weird dream that left an ache in their chest, a dream of something that couldn't and wouldn't be theirs. it was better this way. he has to know that, they thought.

how could a child thrive in a family where the leading solution to a situation was abandonment ?

" i have no idea what you're insinuating, mr. jensen, but i wasn't aware you were so interested in the world of lawyers. i feel bad for whoever you seem to find so revolting, " they replied, straightening their shoulders. their expression turned blank, pushing their emotions to the wayside. getting upset would only prove a point, or land themself in hot water. they were already trying to find a way out of the situation, though they knew they wouldn't be able to just let him have the last word. " i'm sure your daughter is, of course, your top priority. it's admirable, really. i'm really impressed you managed to settle down. if memory serves me, you used to be in a different side of this scene. " it's a comment perhaps more damning to themself as it might to him, an admission of what their parties were known for not terribly long ago. " luckily, we both seem to have come far, wouldn't you agree? "

if anything positive could come from this interaction, it was the fact that cody would have to give them credit where it was due. nothing had ever swept a good mood from beneath his feet as quickly as this; nothing, that is, except the day that natalie was left on his doorstep and himi effectively popped the bubble of his blissful ignorance. he'd been more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt – not with his daughter of course, but if they were willing to be friendly he would be, too.

" wait, what? " himiko blinked, confused as pieces started sliding into place. shit. of course the place that would catch their interest would be somewhere connected to him. what luck. " cody. i didn't think i'd see you here. let alone that you owned it." their tone was, perhaps, sickly sweet. " but i guess i missed a few pages here. if i recall, nothing about our connection required a commitment. at least not one beyond a singular night. " somehow they had managed to avoid such situations for the past several years, despite their residency on the same street. still, seeing him made the guilt in their stomach jump into their throat. they pushed down the apology fighting to come out and opted to focus on the topic at hand.

" i meant what i said, the compliments. i'm not going to pretend that was dependent on who the owner was, " they continued, holding their hands up in a surrender. " it's rare to find places that are so clearly loved. people tend to just assign that to houses. i'm fascinated to find out how you managed all this on top of your other commitments. since you clearly are very passionate about even a fleeting one. "

there really weren't any words for the level of calm that was spreading it's way through his veins. cody had gotten used to being on edge, whether it was waiting for the general loudness of natalie as she waltzed around the house or just the anxiety of waiting for someone to walk into the karaoke bar and order something from him. these customers were different, though. these were his people. the music was his music. hell, even the general layout of tilted stage was entirely his and his alone. for the first time in a very long time, cody felt serene.

he was more than a little surprised that there was so much interest in a nightclub on cornelia street, considering how sleepy the area seemed to be. it was a pleasant surprise, though, considering he'd pretty much hedged all his bets on the idea. he was busier than he ever felt he could be at new soundtrack, but he really didn't mind. most of the drinks could be made in one swoop. he was handing them out now when someone new wandered over to the bar.

he listened to her questions, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth as she complimented him effortlessly. he actually paused in his movements, signaling for someone else to finish the orders he had been making before crossing his arms over his side of the bar. ❝ what kind of owner would i be if i wasn't around for the opening, himiko? after all, when i give a shit about something, i commit to it. ❞

the opening of a new club had cornelia street bustling. it had been a while since something new had grabbed himiko's attention at least. all they really ever knew was work, sleep, dinner with their family, and their morning and night routines. it was all according to the plan - focus on their job, go to the organized blind dates they were set up with, keep their partying to a minimum. but with such a place on their backdoor step, they were helpless to the siren call. loud music, several drinks, and the bustle of a crowd would fix them, they were sure of it. they pulled out a dress they hadn't worn in ages - the last time they wore it was that night if they recalled correctly. common sense would've been to toss it, but they held onto it all the same. it was their go-to dress when they had been hosting parties nonstop, their lucky charm for a good party with minimal chaos. surely the same luck hadn't worn off over the years. the worst thing that could happen was a spilled drink, right? they walked in with a sense of false confidence, shoulders pulled back and head held high as they observed the room. there was no denying it was the owner's everything, a passion project. the music was, perhaps, not their usual taste, but it had been their bread and butter at some point. nostalgia ran through their veins, a half-smile crossing their face as they sat at the bar. " this place is amazing, " they said to the bartender, head turned to see the club from a new angle.
