Stranger Things turns seven years old today!

Fun Fact—when the show first premiered back in 2016, my friends literally BEGGED me to watch it.

I was under the impression that the show was exclusively horror, and I’ve always been the type of person where telling me to watch something is just going to motivate me not to, so I avoided the show for three whole years.

But on a random day in 2019, while scrolling through Netflix, I stumbled upon a preview for S3. I remember thinking the season looked significantly less scary than what I’d previously been shown by friends, so I gave it a shot.

Then the poor people of Hawkins melted into goop and joined into a giant spider-monster made of flesh and gore, so…I was wrong. And freshly traumatized.

But the show had captivated me so much that I not only sat through the whole season but immediately when back and binged the first two.

I had become emotionally invested in the fictional little freaks on my tv, as so many of us did.

By the time May 2022 rolled around, my younger sister and I had stayed up until 4 AM, when the first seven episodes of S4 dropped.

I am not exaggerating when I say I have never known an experience as amazing as laughing, crying, and screaming in horror with my sister that morning.

I went from “I am NOT watching this scary crap!!!” to “I cannot WAIT to see the scary crap!!!”

But this show has done more than just entertain me. It’s changed me as a person—perhaps even forged some new parts of me as well.

I was only sixteen years old when I first saw Mike Wheeler in s3 and went “OH NO HES A PATHETIC LOSER AND I WANT HIM.” I was sixteen when I first realized Will Byers’ unspoken struggle and went “OH NO HES JUST LIKE ME.”

I was sixteen years old when I realized the show I was watching had first premiered on the same day I was born.

It was like some stupid coincidence, that I and this show that was so integral to my development as a young adult the last few years had something in common. It’s a stupid thing to even consider, because I was not the only one whose life had been changed by Stranger Things.

Even still, it felt like the show, the characters, and the themes had been carefully crafted for me. The story that was being told—in some extremely simplified and less complicated way— was about me. My struggles. My triumphs. My monsters.

But I guess that’s the point of the show, isn’t it? To make every single loser and freak and regretful person feel special? To make someone who’s nobody feel like somebody? To forge a community out of those who longed for one, and to provide an understanding to those who needed it most.

Anyway, this has been my very long and overdramatic way of saying happy 7th birthday to Stranger Things, and happy 20th birthday to me!! :,)

The doors of the elevator open with a soft chime, and Will practically floats out into the hallway and back to Dustin’s apartment. It’s as if a weight has been lifted, one that he had gotten so used to carrying that he almost forgets how to walk without it. He can’t believe his life right now, and that’s saying something coming from Will fuckin’ Byers.

And when he opens the door, it feels both ten times more and infinitely less real to lock eyes with Mike in the kitchen.

Oh, I’ve got it bad.

Mike seems to get prettier as the days go by. It’s not so much him that’s changing, Will thinks, but the atmosphere around him. The universe lights Mike Wheeler differently than everyone else, the air is cleaner and colors are brighter around him. He carries an aura with him that makes him seem so otherworldly. 

Will just makes a tight smile and waves like the awkward high schooler he seems to have been reduced to, and Mike waves back with an equally dopey smile on his face.

“And what the fuck is this?” Dustin’s voice cuts through, and Will is yanked back down to earth and onto the floor to find his best friend sitting on the couch, eyes bouncing back and forth between the two of them like ping-pong balls in his head.

POST-KISS BYLER?!?! DUSTIN KNOWS?! ARCADE DATE?! WILL AND MIKE BEING ABSOLUTELY GAY DORKS WITH EACH OTHER?! WHEELERBOI IS IN FACT NOT DEAD AND STILL UPDATING THIS STORY EVEN AFTER BEING COMPLETELY GONE FOR TWO MONTHS!?!

guys I am SO SORRY for the wait for RESPONSIBILITY—I SWEAR I’m working on it, but with the holidays this past month and then Noah coming out (🫂💙) and a bunch of personal stuff, I’ve been INSANELY distracted, which is super annoying bc this upcoming chapter is conceptually SO simple—but I either can’t find the time or the motivation.
