When Killing Your Brother Was The Only Option
What do you do when you're the 141st son in line for the throne? Kill 140 of your siblings. The oldest crime? Probably murder. But the next one was probably fratricide (which I guess is murder too). Cain & Abel. Romulus and Remus. Do you think they had K/DA for those?
I mean the highest kill count has to be the Pandavas killing their 100 Kaurava cousins (in lieu of righteousness to their warrior faith, but I digress). Their K/DA was 100/5 = 20- higher than many on the list for fratricide. Though I wouldn't say these K/DAs are just.
Fratricide is a sin- in almost every morality system (I do want to find one where it is acceptable). Is there any day that a sin gets washed away? Romulus killed Remus, but he built Rome (I mean if Remus, having to call it Reme would be very annoying). Rome changed Europe, and pretty much the world. Does that excuse what he did?
The Sword of Damocles hangs over not just kings, but princes too (or princesses, though Sororicides are super uncommon). Perhaps it was the environment that convinced them to shank their brothers. Perhaps it was their mothers, their loves, their advisors, their allies. Perhaps it was a preemptive strike- "I kill you before you kill me". Either you become the predator or the prey. Does that excuse their part in it? Does that wash their sin? I think so. Killing brothers isn't cool and all, but I can see where they came from.
