reflection 2.0
(copied and pasted from document)
What could we have done to improve the outcomes of this project?
We found it most difficult trying to figure out a medium size and dimensions, despite having roughly measured prototypes. I think we could have decided on the measurements for each ring, metal type, designs and engravement for the ring metal bands. If this had been sorted and sent into Regal Castings earlier in the semester, we could have finalized some qualitative outcomes for our business and project.
I personally could have researched more into how we wanted the rings to be designed (for example, a typical band, or soldered with external metals and materials like CZ stones which are cheaper alternatives to diamonds). Delving in-depth into each jewelry pieces’ representation and why each ring would incorporate a quirky icon or object is important to understand about our own business journey.

some reflection
so in turn, for the final production process of this project, we could not get our ideal silver rings, engraved with "plan b" in on time for submission and pictures, unfortunately. we were willing to have something processed at least to an extent, to show for the studio. we were not able to have this done to a quality standard in time, which in turn we did not want any half-pie physical prototyping. i think this is because aicha and i are both guilty deemed perfectionists and in terms of waiting on a fabrication service and beforehand figuring out the dimensions which delivers versatile size - was simply impossible to do in a smaller timeframe.
i feel like we could have got a finalised and finished, quality physical artefact if we had to contact and worked with the Castors in an earlier stage of the project then it would have been sussed. it's not new to be having time management issues in a studio project - however, there were many, many indecisive moments that resulted in the KTB turnouts. we changed and altered a lot of the ideas we had (which is a normal process) which also would have contributed to us not having our finalised artefact for submission.

SWOT analysis for our business plan
Tumblr media
~
It's an essential task to jot down any possibilities in terms of the business. Anything we (business members) can consider a strength or weakness like skills or required knowledge we do not excel at or know. It includes also any potential risk, opportunity or offer whether it is entrepreneurial, financial, social or contributes to the business initiative.
~
Writing down what we think may or may not improve it can also depend on our success as we need to understand each members' concerns and ideas.
~
It is vital to include ethical considerations because it helps to kickstart the business foregrounds and provides a foundation on what to work on and where to go from there.

The prices of their tools and supplies are reasonable and not cheap yet not too expensive
They have good service reviews and are seemingly well-respected and reliable

next research topics:
Necklace clasps
Karat gold for chains
I feel that it is important that we know the different size lengths so that we know what particular and common lengths would be appropriate to market for our pieces.
Lengths are also helpful to note so that we can further look into layering chains
It will also be helpful to have this knowledge for customers who are unsure what size they should purchase.
For women;
14-16 inch = Choker (tighter close to neck)
18-19 inch = Princess (usually falls out at the collarbone)
20-22 = Matinee (extends just below the collarbone.
Tumblr media
For men:
18 inch= length comes down to the base of the neck
20 inch= comes down to the collarbone
22 inch= length falling just below the collarbone
Tumblr media
*Also added in kids chart as I know this would be something to develop hopefully in the near future.
Measuring chains is done simply by a ruler or tape measure. The chain will be lined up against the ruler from one end to the other and the clasp INCLUDED in your measurement. There is no need to include charms/pendants hanging from the chain alone.
Tumblr media
When noting down the length, usually it's taken in INCHES (although we can use centimetres). After taking its exact measurements against the ruler/tape measure, we would then round it up to the nearest inch or cm (if we don’t get an exact number).
Extra Info
A measuring tape would be very useful! (should be some available at your local dollar store) Wrap the tape around your neck keeping the tape measure parallel to the floor as you measure.
Then add 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) to your neck measurement to calculate your MINIMUM recommended chain length
Common measurement sizes:
13-14 ½ inch neck (33-36cm) = Best fits 18 inch (45.7cm)
15-16 ½ inch neck (38-41.2cm) = Best fits 20 inch (50.8cm)
17-18 ½ inch neck (43.2 - 47cm) = Best fits 22 inch (55.9cm)
Tips:
If you/we can’t do customized sizing then choosing a necklace length 2 inches up from your actual neck measurement that would safely fit you.
Height can be a factor to look at also when choosing a necklace length Longer necklaces can overburden shorter people Shorter necklaces can get lost on taller people So basically the shorter you are keep the length neutral as well as being taller and laying with different lengths and pieces that can be fitted around your main centre chain
Body Figure can also be looked at! Different lengths and thicknesses of chains can really flatter and bring attention to not only the jewellery piece but also to your body.
Pendants/charms can also add length to necklaces (and weight)
Chain Thickness
For thickness, it’s really up to us and what aesthetic we go for.
Chain thickness is commonly measured in millimetres
common chain thicknesses in my opinion for everyday styles. (You can pretty much ask for whatever and customised sizes for width)📷
Tumblr media
I like these sizes for everyday looks simply because the chains aren’t doing too much to hook in attention but fine enough as it is to be elegant on its own.
I also think selecting the right chain width will also be beneficial for having multiple chains on for layering and adding pendants on chains also
I also feel that bigger chains will be more statement pieces for our collection rather than everyday wear (photo here would be examples of thicker chains)
*This to be discussed when finalising our designs*
Necklace Clasps
The type of clasp we use on our products is a crucial part of holding our pieces (specifical chains) together. We will need to consider the weight and thickness of the chain to make sure we select the right clasps to keep it together.📷
The most considered safest and common in today’s manufacturing are the; spring-ring & lobster claw
Spring Ring
Cheap and lightweight
Doesn’t require soldering (easy to twist the O at the end of clasps and hook chain of our choice)
Can be bent (put out of shape) easily
If the pendant is too heavy ring may open (as well as chains layered with these clasps, might get caught together and open)
Tumblr media
Lobster Claw
Much thicker and durable/secure
Can be soldered onto a chain of our choice so they do open open
More expensive
Rotate on the neck (the heavy it is the more the clasps is going to fall through to the front of your neck)

a smol update
ah well considering the last few weeks have been quite messy in terms of productivity I have found that the submission date is leaping closer. essentially I have got my foot in the door in terms of research into jewellers, tools & supplies services. there are a few ways we could produce this project either manually or through a third party. we have inquired with some jeweller services in Auckland to work with and found a potential service located in Avondale. G & A Warburtons is a seemingly reliable and highly rated jewellers company that specialises in jewellery tools, services, designing and packaging - pretty much a great start off for jewellery making initiative. Aicha and I have set out to keep searching for other potential companies with cheaper or more convenient services. we are currently looking to send in the proper dimensions, designs and packaging preferences. as stated previously, we will produce only sterling silver and gold as these are more commonly worn and versatile metals. we have also opted to take a stance on our business name change from "UNKNOWN" to "Plan B" as we feel like there are many changes and challenges we’ve faced already during our business venture. we felt like this minor change can represent lot about the company - we just felt that UNKNOWN was pushing a general and mediocre “edgy” approach, and we want to be represented as authentically as we can.
Below are some research copied and pasted from google doc:
Plan B “Jewellery” Research/Inspo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFf4rmyMZWQ Youtube Inspo story on how Bobby White became a Jeweler
“Always a reason” behind pieces/creations (should be able to tell its own story) Letting jewellery speak for itself
Need your own style! Especially if you want your own designed products
When creating for other people you need to look at the person as a whole and work with that
Becoming a jeweller, you NEED to love the process! Need to love everything from designing it, creating new pieces to being in the office/shop for hours and days of repetitive work
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7fm3mG6jv4 Youtube clip more around the fundamentals of creating and running your own Jewelry business
Don't need to have any specific qualifications to get a head start into the jewellery industry
Key steps to making jewellery
Design Jewelry (used special 3d app)
Print 3d wax using 3d printer
Take 3d printed wax and turn it into gold (casting)
File, sand and polish gold piece
Setting diamonds on the piece (optional)
Final polishing of the pieces
Gold Facts
Pure/ 24 karat gold (stated as 999.9 gold as 100% pure gold is impossible to achieve) and always coloured yellow
Gold is mixed with other metals such as silver and copper because it is too soft and wouldn’t be durable to make jewellery with.
The higher the karat the higher amount of gold is in the piece. Common types of gold: 10K, 14K, 18K, 24K *In the US 10 carats is legally not considered the gold
Also the higher amount of gold the richer gold and colour in the piece E.g 10K gold has 41.7% & 14K has 58.3% gold
3 different colours to gold: White gold, Yellow gold and Rose gold Platinum silver palladium + pure gold = more white Cooper + pure gold = more pink/rose
Whiter gold to be rhodium plated due to casting process taking away its white finish Once these are melted together they can’t separate
Testing for Gold
Can buy an acid kit (eBay), this includes a scratchpad in which you starch your gold onto and then pour a small drop of liquid (supplied with the kit, each bottom is provided to test each amount of carat) on top of the scratch. If the gold starts to dissolve then it is less carat of what you have just tested for and if it does not then it is that carat or more
Electrical pen test; same method as an acid kit but with the pen, touch the gold piece and the connection pad will indicate the range in which the carat being tested actually is.
Most reliable testing is using a Gold testing gun (jeweller shops should have this already, so you can go in and ask for gold pieces to be examined and moderated)
*Carat markings can easily be faked
Eg having a 14k marking on a bracelet which is only really 10k
To check gold prices use https://www.kitco.com/
Diamond Facts
Diamonds are mined in countries such as China, Russia, Canada, South Africa, then other countries may buy them and are then purchased by diamond dealers in jewellery district (area in which focus on manufacturing as well as nourishing jewellery) who make pieces and sell them in retail stores.
Diamonds set in metal are called loose diamonds Jewellers look for how many loose diamonds they'll need, quality, size and quantity and then will buy off diamond dealers to make their piece.
Diamond carat and Gold carat are very completely different Diamond= Weight of diamond Gold= Purity of gold
The Four C’s
Colour - Diamonds have lots of different colour variations - Letter D means no colour, and no colour means the stone is worth a lot - This is the opposite to a stone that has more colour, the more yellow the stone the the less it is worth - Always look into colours D-H
Treated diamonds; diamonds made into different colours such as yellow, cognac (reddish brown) and blue This process is done by using white diamonds that are high in yellow colour (bad quality) and using a heating method to change its colour
Clarity - Some disadvantage to its beauty can be the cloudiness, scratches and pieces of black carbon of the stone (called Inclusions) - Like with the colour, the less inclusion the better the stone - There is also a clarity grading chart for diamonds - Good target for SI quality diamonds (Slightly Inclusive) - people checking for clarity of the stone usually use magnifying glasses to check
Cut: Different cuts of the stone can better its shine ‘round brilliant is a popular shape cut’
Carat weight: Carat is just the weight of the diamonds
Tumblr media
Using https://www.fiverr.com/ & https://www.cgtrader.com/
Used these two websites to look and download 3d models of pieces
cgtrader: shows you how 3d render model pieces would look like after it is finished. Here you can purchase the design as well as even contact the designer and also see how many diamonds you’ll need for the piece and the total carat weight
The cost of pieces will vary depending on how detailed and how big the piece is.
Once the designer has finished making your file, they’ll send back an STL or 3D M file in which will be ready to print
Good tip: build a portfolio of 3d files in which you will mask for production
Chain Types

Personal favourites from here
Tumblr media
Box chain:
+ I like how this is a versatile piece (worn by both men and women) + Pretty durable and difficult to break but easy to fix up + Length of chain can be worn any way to suit your look
Cable Chain:
+Like how delicate it looks on its own + Like that with this particular chain, would go nice with a pendant since its petite look isn’t doing too much
+ Can be thicker or thinner (really depends on what look you’re going for) + Most commonly worn
Tumblr media
Cube Chain:📷
+ Timeless design dating way back
+ Another versatile piece for men and women
+ Sturdy and easy to maintain
Tumblr media
Figaro Chain:
+ Love the mix of pattern sizes in this particular piece
+I like how elegant it can appear
Tumblr media
Snake Chain:
+ Gives a very chic vibe and details are good but also a simple statement piece
Strong Chain Types:
Need to consider its strength so its longevity is maximised
Cable, curb, Figaro and rope chains are usually the strongest
Weakest Chain: (be on the lookout for)
Chains with flat think links
Limited flexibility
Herringbone, snake and omega chains are usually the weakest
Best Metals for Necklace Chains:
Gold, Silver (sterling is more durable), Platinum (more expensive/similar to white gold) and Titanium (inexpensive, light and highly durable, darker colour than white gold and silver)

prototyping
&i have been hectically busy in the past few weeks but have managed to create some rugged-looking prototype concepts for jewellery we could produce in the future. some have been inspired by existing popular brands.
essentially, we are planning to start our business brand with jewellery being the prime focus. we want to address the idea that a little can go a long way, specially in terms of street fashion - extra pieces of jewellery or a handbag can inevitably enhance the appearance of an outfit. it is especially effective if you use symbols or pieces that affiliate with the theme or occasion. e.g. a bat ring in sterling silver for a halloween look, or a heart ring in gold for a valentines day look.
in the long run, we plan to elevate our ideation and continue in an innovative pathway with minimalistic pieces. we could potentially create handbags or scarfs in the future with the same approach. but, beginning with jewellery is a safe option as it not only be easier to start with one idea, but also because it is a significant decorative and expressive ornament worn for many different reasons.
these are the prototypes i made & inspo:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
these are other quirky items I found around my room that could resemble our business concept(s):
gameboy or controller
Tumblr media
soysauce fish bottle
Tumblr media
piggy bank
Tumblr media
toy car
Tumblr media
handbags
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trash to fashion:
One of the primal attributes to our entrepreneurial initiative is that we aim to showcase a quirky and unique brand, including each of the items that we would design and produce. We will be producing ideally cute and distinctive designs to represent the quirky and awkward personalities of the founders (Aicha and myself). For jewellery ideas, these can be implemented into necklaces, pendants, charms or earrings etc.

"unknown"
Tumblr media
to summarise literally the past five or so weeks of the semester, i have been working on subtle bits and pieces around this project. so, to begin with, my project idea is practically a business brand, focusing primarily on accessorising, rather than your typical attire brand with dominant items such as tops or bottoms. i want to start with designing and potentially producing jewellery first because it is an elegant form of dress and can be stylised, worn or expressed in various ways. i love the idea of being able to express oneself through fashion and wearables, whether it be a mood or occasion. one of my coworker friends from work are keen to work together along with the business' development. our brand will be called "unknown" as it identifies two introverts and the idea of sense of the unknown and questioning reality, and conspiracy theories.
why jewellery?
jewellery is a subsequent decorative ornament, worn by humans as early as 3000BC and can collectively be expressed or perceived in various manners. jewellery is an elegant form of expression without doing too much, which is a prime reason why we wanted to start off with this.
design process
we have yet to properly design and reciprocate our ideal visions for the brand. we will be innovating with what we have and ideally ethically source and produce our materials (silver and gold).
inspo
aicha (my coworker) and I both have distinctive tastes in our jewellery, although it is primarily similar. i generally prefer silver over gold and chunkier, thick jewellery, kind of like biker rings and chains. but also thinner elegant jewellery looks elegant and simple. aicha likes pretty much most designs and styles, too. we've looked into some webistes and stores for inspo too and found a few that resemble a similar idea to ours.
what styles or aesthetic do we aim to design and produce?
we each have our own different tastes in jewellery and accessory design but ultimately we both like all types of jewellery designs and aesthetics. although most of my family and friends tend to prefer gold over silver, i personally feel that silver is nice, classy, versatile and suits just about any fit or style (particularly dark coloured clothing as it will stand out bright).
different jewellery pieces can be significant to certain outfits, occasions or moods.
we have considered researching more into two very common and popular jewellery aesthetics which are common in modern-day street fashion. we both agreed that we could implement both of these common styles into our design elements but with our own distinctive twists. we like the ambience of thin and cute, minimalistic jewellery such as necklaces, chains or bracelets because it’s very elegant but subtle. we also love the commanding appearance of thick, blocky and dense jewellery such as chains, rings, earpieces and bracelets not only because of its aesthetic but how it can be paired with almost any outfit. often modern-day thicker jewellery, especially in silver, is inspired by the gothic culture and aesthetic.
we want to consider design elements that are versatile and quirky which correlate both without personalities and idea branding image. using designs that essentially, are unique and eye-catching but also for any or everyday wear.

'21: a "new" start?
'i guess..this is my first post for the year 2021, nothing too special. but slowly trying to come back into this study mindset from been working a full-time job this summer, is a lot less motivating than i thought. i don’t really have any strong ideas or interests at the moment for a BCT project, or anything really - my mind is a kind of in a blurry state. but i guess some of my interests and hobbies have altered a lot these past few months and i can say that it has strengthened my general knowledge and interest in some particular fields. i found that i’m pretty interested in psychology and human behaviour although back in 2018/19 i would read some online articles and question forums about human behavioural psychology and why we tend to do what we do...
but i like the idea of implementing psychological aspects into an initiative because it brings more of a purpose and real perspective into a concept, rather than focussing on physical dynamics. this semester i see myself working solo on a project again (being a 'full-time' part-time student) which i feel would need extra time to figure out what i will be producing. currently i am brain-dumping concepts and interests into a google document to hopefully, generate a strong concept.
current world affairs:
COVID19
racial equality
gender equality
climate change
current Interests:
photography and photo manipulation
psychology and the human mind
filmography
commerce and marketing
FASHION
music or creative audio
influence of social media
current relevant topics:
anxiety
mental health journey/growing from depression
introversion
how is covid affecting me personally? my friends, home, work etc. ?
there is so much to wonder about and explore in the world, in modern society, and within my own generation. i want to implement a societal matter into my project this semester.
Sat, 27 Feb
We each jotted down some of our personal interests on a digital mind map because it gave us more flexibility in terms of research topics and concepts - we were able to narrow down each topic to a concept.

More artefact concepts...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Sam and I decided on a rough idea for the artefact design and how it will turn out, we each drew up some quick concepts of potential designs just to see how we could make it. It’s pretty much a little scope to figure out what we can try from here.
Basically these two designs are similar aside from the geometrical difference. There would have been a natural wood base, either square and straight or spherical, and a fitting lid. The lid would essentially have a built-in glass or acrylic base so that it would light up the ‘world map’ silhouette. This was more of a complex design that would have required an Arduino, a whole lot of coding and careful placement on the interior.
Considering there is less than a month until the end of the semester, we still have a lot of time to finish up on the installation. Sam is currently dealing with the laser-cutting of the base while we are both working on the work document. Sam has also thought to display a scrapbook with work and progress photos.

An artefact concept
Tumblr media
Please excuse the horrible image quality but here is a very basic concept I initially envisioned for this artefact to appear as. I thought that the design would be much less complex than what we are actually planning to proceed with, which is also quite simplistic too (a positive for us for sure...)
A flat world map diagram with protruding data measurements showing what is literally an ordinary graph. I imagined each country, or demographic or region of the active cases would differ slightly in (obviously size) colour or tone but it’s still pretty similar to the JHU designs...
Do keep in mind this was a quick yet last minute sketch (Probably late July or early August), and drawn a while ago although I don’t think it is the worse thing I’ve ever thought of, I wouldn’t mind recycling this design for a future data mapping project, maybe.

Hello, trello
Since we have not been quite updating the blogs about ‘Lighting up Covid’ and it’s current tasks, here is an up-to-date Trello timetable basically showing the bits and pieces we need to finalise and polish up before November 6 showcase night.
Tumblr media
I don’t know but I feel we are in pretty good hands at the moment, considering how messy this year has been so far. The ideation and communication put into this project outside of class has helped the progress push a bit more, especially with the assignments lel...
But I think to say the least, this semester doesn’t seem to be too drastic in terms of the workload.

“Lighting up Covid”
I haven’t really posted on here much, at all, I think... (Lowkey forgot about the draft I wrote from August) but here is an update on our studio project for sem 2, 2020.
All previous work mentioned in this post is updated from July - October.
Essentially, we are making a data visualisation artefact displaying the global covid19 statistics and density based on each country. We are currently in the process of laser-cutting a base made from natural wood and it will be done using the laser-cutter machine in the Art and Design building. We are also going to source a reliable and decent projector for the data to be shown with. The whole idea of this project is to basically show a physical and visual representation of how severe the active cases rates are in each region of the world to date.
The data we are going to be using will be sited from John Hopkins University of Medicine’s main website using the ‘active cases’ visual graph as a template. We decided to use this site for information as the data and research about various sub-topics surrounding the virus, seems pretty legit and accurate...
Group members
Sam - Head of research, design and create
Summer - Head of design, research and create
Artefact
The artefact is basically a natural-wood base cut into the shape of the world map, with JHU live data on global active cases projected onto the base showcasing the severity of covid-19 in various parts of the world. The moral of the project is kind of like a push, to further spread awareness about the virus. Ideally, this would be a walk-by or glance type of installation for the showcase night although we are not yet sure where we can set up until closer to the date.
JHU data visualisation online:
Tumblr media
This is essentially the ‘template’ we will be using. Its quite simplistic but delivers the message effectively (hopefully...) and until then, we will be working more into the group work content (timetable, individual tasks, research on why JHU is a reliable source to use etc. )

Tautai Pacific Art Gallery
We attended the Tautai Art Exhibition (unfortunately late) to check out the art displayed. Although the gallery space and work were very minimalistic, it was a pleasure to have been able to view and take in the work of various Pacific themed work and artists. By the time we had left I did not realise we hadn’t recorded the names of the pieces of work or the artists because we were in a rush. (Please feel free to correct the post below if you know the artists of the following images).
1. I personally think this piece was probably the most interesting and eye-catching work in the gallery and my favourite. I admire the minimalism yet it is so mesmerising as well as the structure. It was an interactive installation as you could walk around the strings (a Kim Possible moment).
Tumblr media
2. Now I interpreted this piece with rather “homey” connotations as I am part Samoan, this image looks very familiar to me. Green or unripe bananas are a significant part in island food.
Tumblr media
3. You can’t miss this one when visiting Tautai. Not only because its right at the front of the space once you walk inside but also very large, aesthetic and commanding in its stance.

First day of semester 2: Technology, Culture and Creative Practice
We went to the Auckland Art gallery to look at the exhibition and grasp the ideas or just simply look at all of the work. I loved most of the work set up. There were a few that obviously stood out the most. We needed to capture a photo of at least three pieces of work we liked and explain why in a post, so here it is ...
1). Robert Zhao Renhui - A guide to the flora and fauna of the world (2013).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was my absolute favourite piece in the exhibition. What stands out to me the most is the pastel/opaque colours and the symmetry of each object in each frame. It’s mesmerising in its appeal.
2.) Pieter Hugo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These photographs caught my attention with a sort of eerie structure? It could be the OCD talking. However, I found something about this work and its approach with a sense of unease - yet beautiful at the same time.
3). Christoph Gielen - CONVERSIONS, Suburban California (2008).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was fascinated by this (birds eye view) shot. It was another one of those pieces where you kind of delve into the image frozen in time. I gazed at it for a while because it also reminiscent of an album cover art called ‘Quality control’ by Intro and Quavo. (I knew itttt)

Cover art quick concepts - undefined name
1). Inspired by Andy Warhol pop art and heavy contrast in colours including the vibrancy. Was a quick concept which I didn’t not consider that the backdrop image (originally was a stock image of the sunlight rays at the bottom of a swimming pool) hd the stock watermark still (my bad...👀)
2). Inspired by Jaden Smith’s “SYRE” album merchandise designs. Typography and the overlapping of wording is interesting and bothersome as it is intentionally messy which ironically draws my attention more
3). A concept I did not consider even to save. It is not my ideal aesthetic for a cover art piece but was interesting to implement a sense of nature into it. After staring at it for a while it came to my attention that it resembled the nz lotto logo quite a bit, but hey...
4). Wanted a messy, scrappy concept - using elemis of a typical school book to suggest a youthful aura i am not quite sure if it worked. hmm...
5). Concept(s) that was derived from a grunge and yume-kawaii aesthetic. Practically a mix of cute, joyful, lovely + dangerous, pain, sadness etc. I ended up playing around with the colour coordinations as i genuinely like pastel colours but am not typically a fan of the “mediocre girl” aesthetic, girl things etc. That wispy image is fire but in various colours - It’s interesting to see your daily average things but displayed in a non-generic manner like change of colours, style, vibe etc.
