Writing meronia in an au is always so difficult because how exactly do you capture that intense synergy and the buzzing of things left unsaid when you change their history? How do you still make them, them? Can it ever be? I guess since I mainly like them because of the way the years have encased hard feelings in ice and yet it can all melt away at a touch, a provocation of the other one’s doing. The way the desire to climb to the top is ingrained in mello in ways he both can’t stop running away from and yet wholeheartedly embraces. The way it took his life. The way near looks to the bottom and realizes he’s stuck up there because he surpassed god and took his place and he never meant to. The way he would kill for a ladder.

I think a lot about what Near's life was like after Mello left Wammy's. Near starts investigating Kira from square one at 13 years old. I feel like it's often acknowledged that Mello becomes acquainted with violence at a young age, but so does Near. I imagine what it would have been like for him, being asked to do want his idol couldn't while still a child, pouring over endless documents of death and violence. It's one of the reasons I find his calm demeanor to be so compelling. Near just takes everything is stride, even though the fate of the world has been put on his shoulders.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions but Near as a character deserves so much more love.

i'm sure i've said this before but i feel that near and mello both repress their feelings for each other but in, like, very different ways. near is like. i want something i cannot have and that's just how life is sometimes. thems the breaks. i will cope with this with perfect grace and dignity until my bones turn into dust. mello meanwhile just outright refuses to acknowledge that he's ever wanted anything in his life (or at least. he refuses to acknowledge wanting any of the things he REALLY wants, save for wanting to beat near). their saving grace, however, is that once near realizes he CAN have mello [and, is like, at least sort of secure in their relationship] he can access Spoiled Brat Mode and just directly ask for / demand what he wants. absolutely huge relief for mello because this way he can just be like >:) "well... i GUESS we can make out since you want me so so incredibly bad." instead of having to admit that he was going to fall to his knees crying if he had to go another thirty seconds without gluing his mouth to near's
