In my opinion, being a Hokage was the coolest stuff before they tried to make it complex and failed. It was like, hey, a Hokage is someone responsible for people. He's admired. He's respected. He's also responsible for people in multiple ways, not just being the strongest ninja to save them all. Hiruzen had to fight Orochimaru on his own, sure, but before he would at least have to make decisions to take care of the village (if he was good with that it's another debate). Tsunade had a billion things to do, and she had to make strong decisions. She sent Jiraiya, someone she was so close to, towards a very difficult mission (and he WAS one of the most capable ones, and without his intel Pain would be maybe even impossible to beat). This job is hard and complex because the ninja life is hard and insane and risky.

And I think that could have been cool AF if Naruto actually took more of that mantle. He was already admired and respected after Pain saga. The only thing he needed was the maturity for leadership, and to embrace more of that aspect. It would suck to watch the entire thing and see that he doesn't want to be a Hokage anymore, but the idea of him becoming a Hokage to take care of people and to be responsible for saving others was already there! Since the classic Naruto stuff! Naruto's main way of getting villains or antagonists to redeem is to headbutt them (sometimes literally) and say "THAT SUCKS DUDE WTF" and it works because he knows how war hurts. He knows pain. He knows rejection and he will force people to recognize and face that if he needs to. He, as a kid, already wanted to make a difference.

Thing is, at least for me, the biggest issue is that they never developed more of that aspect after the world got bigger. In the same way that other characters were deleted from the main narrative, any reason for Naruto to become a Hokage outside of "i want recognition and family, i want to be loved" were deleted or just never really approached. Clan stuff? Pff. Organization? Pff. Trying to, you know, protect and find ways to take care of people that went through war or the dangers that still very much exist in a ninja world? LOL.

Hiruzen and Tsunade at least had, idk, a council of assholes with too much power that would try to slap them into submission. The only reason they have for Naruto is that, idk, he has a lot of MANAGEMENT ISSUES? He needs to answer to everything? It's like Konoha can only change if it's on the other side of bad stuff. From a bunch of assholes trying to control the village, to only Naruto and Shikamaru holding the fort like there's no one else they can trust. TSUNADE HAD A SECRETARY. IT WASN'T A BAD THING.

Putting aside my opinion on Naruto deciding the Hokage hat is not for him, the idea of him becoming it is not THAT bad but it falls flat and not because there's no conflict, but bc nothing fucking changed (also again, it's like they are actively trying to make Naruto look like the worst parent ever, but they needed that sweet continuation money).

Sarada has to go to libraries to know about her family because Sasuke is not around to talk about it and one would think they teach children about one of THE FOUNDING CLANS and how they got murdered by the most groomed child soldier after Kakashi Hatake, but no.

Amegakure went to shit despite Naruto telling Nagato and Konan he would help with that, and Obito was actually right in berating Konan for believing a teenager about that shit (get explodized, idiot!)

It would have been nice to see a change, Amegakure being peaceful and a place that no longer suffers from being in the middle of conflict between countries, Konoha no longer training children to become shinobi, but politics being politics they know they'll need the trained dogs to sit and roll when they are told (but hey, at least the kids get to decide between ninja school and normal school!).

It's all the same, but since Sasuke is no longer an active risk it is like Naruto settled n went 'actually fuck everything else' and so he made himself attend EVERY LITTLE THING as hokage, just like Minato he is now the poster boy and he's gotta play his part but it isn't even interesting, there's nothing funny or entertaining or anything.
