thinking about how when you experience a lot of shame in your formative years (indirectly, directly, as abuse or just as an extant part of your environment) it becomes really difficult to be perceived by other people in general. the mere concept of someone watching me do anything, whether it's a totally normal activity or something unfamiliar of embarrassing, whether I'm working in an excel spreadsheet or being horny on main, it just makes my skin crawl and my brain turn to static because I cannot convince myself that it's okay to be seen and experienced. because to exist is to be ashamed and embarrassed of myself, whether I'm failing at something or not, because my instinctive reaction to anyone commenting on ANYTHING I'm doing is to crawl into a hole and die. it's such a bizarre and dehumanizing feeling to just not be able to exist without constantly thinking about how you are being Perceived. ceaseless watcher give me a god damn break.

In defense of Genesis’ behavior in the reactor, I would like to say that the Crisis Core Guide does acknowledge that degrading SOLDIERs have a difficult time restraining themselves. Many behave monstrously.

Genesis does not succumb to physical monsterhood as he believes, but his emotional turmoil and behavior is perhaps influenced by this instability when he engages Sephiroth.

This potentially explains his unnecessary moments of nastiness or mockery.

Castlevania: Nocturne, Season 2 Episode 2: "Angel of Death"

Something something mommy issues something something obsessed with how the only people Sephiroth seems to take seriously as threats are both women

Most of the party Sephiroth could not give less of a shit about. He is a god and they are all ants, so why should he? The only meaningful interactions he has with anyone besides Cloud, Tifa and Aerith im Remake/Rebirth is killing Barrett that one time, which was probably more of a meta reference to how Barrett was originally supposed to die when the original game was in development.

Cloud is a threat, of course, but even if Sephiroth believes that he mostly just views Cloud as a toy. He's a pet, he's his little puppet that he loves to break down and mess with so that he can bend him into the perfect tool. The closest Sephiroth gets to putting Cloud on his own level is at the Edge of creation when he offers Cloud his hand. Cloud rejects it so Sephiroth thinks, fine, if you won't be an equal you'll still make a fine plaything, and he acts with that mindset throughout Tebirth.

Aerith and Tifa, though? When the opportunity presents itself, he doesn't dick around, he tries to kill them, because it can and will cost him if they get in his way.

Aerith he seems to respect on some level as an adversary. He actually talks to her in some cutscenes, unlike the entire rest of the party, and he sometimes drops the usual smug face when he does. In Remake he answers her telling him "everything about him is wrong" with a serious expression, even if what he says is utter Jenova nonsense. He makes a jab at her during the dream sequence in the alternate world at the end of Rebirth, more then what he usually offers anyone but Cloud (and Rufus in one cutscene), and the "So this is where you've been hiding," line sounds almost playful. The vibe I get is very similar to Death from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Aerith is powerful, the closest thing to an even match the Planet can offer him, and I think he enjoys the thrill of it, even if he's certain he'll win. Might be because of how she, as the last Ancient, is a fellow "chosen of the planet." Like I mentioned here, he is visibly happy after he kills her in Rebirth, as if this victory over her is actually satisfying to him, compared to most of the time when he sees his success as a forgone conclusion. Then of course, the dead serious "I underestimated you," he gives her at the end like??? He's still condescending to her, that's a given, but that he gives her any attention at all is worth a lot coming from him.

The other woman in the party who gets attention from him is Tifa, and if Rebirth made one thing clear, it's that Sephiroth hates her. Not like the general aloof disdain he has dor humans, but genuine contempt. He tries to turn Cloud against her, makes Cloud try to kill her (which he doesn't even really seem to do with Aerith this go round, it's mostly the Whispers who make Cloud raise his sword, both the black and white ones), tries to finish the job himself when that doesn't work and, when he does address her, blatantly taunts/insults her by dangling his control over Cloud. And he doesn't address her very often, because where Aerith is someone/something on his level whose power he can respect, Tifa is just a normal human who is forcing him to take her seriously because of the threat she poses. Tifa is the strongest tie Cloud has to who he was before Sephiroth got his hooks into him, and Cloud cares about her a lot. Enough, as we saw back in the original, that their bond can break Cloud out of Sephiroth's control. Assuming this Sephiroth knows all the details of the original timelines, his targeting of her in Rebirth makes perfect sense. Tifa's mere presence is a monkey wrench in his plans. She's the most tangible threat to his control over his favorite puppet, and she doesn't even have the nerve to be anything other then a normal human. So he gives her more attention then the passive indifference the rest of the party gets, but it's more like he's trying to kill a bug. He doesn't say a word the whole time he's trying to tear open the Weapon to get at her. She's not worthy of his respect, but she's am actual problem and he can't afford to ignore her.

The only other person besides Cloud Sephiroth gives this kind of attention is Rufus, and it's a pragmatic thing more then anything else, since he just sends one of the black robes to keep him distracted with Wutai and only shows his real face to Rufus right at the end (and honestly I don't think Sephiroth would take the time to do that if the black robe was impersonating anyone besides Glenn. The only time he makes it personal with Rufus is when Rufus is about to fill one of his first friends with lead for a second time.)
