When life hurts, dance heals and when you trust the process there’s no impossible.

I recently had the pleasure of catching up with my childhood friend and teammate, Matthew Benedict Cabrega, a remarkable 17-year-old dancer who has made significant progress in the world of dancesport, particularly in the standard category. I still remember the day I encouraged Matthew to join dancesport. He was hesitant at first, but I knew he had the talent and potential to shine on the dance floor. With a little persuasion, he began attending training sessions and workshops, and it quickly became clear that he was a natural. His dedication and enthusiasm for dance were infectious, and it wasn’t long before he became an official member of Dancesport Team Ormoc.
Matthew’s hard work has truly paid off. He has consistently excelled in competitions, where he has won multiple titles. His commitment to the sport has taken him to various competitions, and he always returns home with medals that reflect his talent and determination. Recently, he achieved a significant milestone by winning six gold medals at the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) meet, a testament to his skill and teamwork with his dance partner.
Matthew’s passion for dance has not gone unnoticed. He is now a recipient of a government scholarship program that supports young athletes in their pursuit of excellence. This opportunity not only helps him continue his dance education but also motivates him to push his limits further. With the upcoming Palarong Pambansa on the horizon, Matthew is more determined than ever to showcase his skills and represent his team with pride.
One of the most inspiring aspects of Matthew’s journey is his mindset. He often shares a saying that resonates deeply with him: “Expect nothing, appreciate everything.” This philosophy has guided him through the ups and downs of competition, reminding him to stay grounded and grateful for every opportunity that comes his way. It’s a powerful reminder that success is not just about winning but also about the experiences and lessons learned along the way.
