One aspect of Theo’s sexual repression issues that absolutely breaks my heart, is that he doesn’t get a chance to come out to his mother. Very often queer kids feel uncomfortable or scared to come out, exactly because they think their parents will see them as completely new people; strangers, liars, frauds. You lie and leave things out in order to stay in the closet. You feel dirty and wrong for having kept such a huge secret from them. Letting someone who’s known you your entire life know, that you’re not who they think you are, is terrifying, (no matter how accepting the reciever of this information is). Theo’s mom is dead; Theo wants to stay the same he was when he still had her, he’s unwilling to grow up, not only because his childhood is the only thing he has left of her, but because it feels wrong for him to move on, change, grow, and ultimately be someone his mother never had the chance to know. He doesn’t want to let her down; live a ‘lifestyle’ that she might’ve not approved of; be someone she might’ve not approved of.
