Whumpee thinking they have to love Caretaker because that is the only form of relationship Whumper ever allowed Whumpee to have with them.
Whumpee had been forced into a relationship with a very imbalanced power dynamic with Whumper but now thats all they knew. Its basically ingrained into them now. Its how they survived. They must love and show love to their superior in order to gain favor/ be considered ‘good’/ avoid punishments/ etc.
So now that Caretaker is the one that has filled the roll of Whumpee’s “superior” in their mind— though Caretaker vehemently denounces being ‘above’ them in any way and continues to reassure they are equals— Whumpee feels like they must love them.
Does Caretaker not realize thats why Whumpee is showing them love? Thinking, instead, that Whumpee truly loves them and allows themself to fall for Whumpee as well? Only to later come to realize that Whumpee doesn’t truly love them?
Or does Caretaker reject them, sending Whumpee into a panic that they weren’t being good enough? That they have failed in being what Caretaker wants and so they try harder and more desperately, hoping that they can be what Caretaker wants?
Does Caretaker not understand that Whumpee is showing affection for a reason and just assumes they are naturally ‘lovey’ and affectionate? Is Caretaker also a more affectionate soul and later feels guilty that they engaged with Whumpee, not realizing they didn’t actually enjoy that type of engagement?
I feel like this dynamic could have decent whump potential. Idk 🤷 …. Anyone have any other thoughts on this?

The whumper never wanted to be cruel, and they didn’t want the whumpee to suffer- but it was the whumpee or them. The whumper was under constant threat of torture and much worse if they didn’t hurt the whumpee. Maybe if they were stronger they would fight it, but they knew they were a coward, at the end of it all.

a whumpee who’s bone-chillingly tired after their experiences.
after it’s all over, the moment they lie down in their bed they’re out like a light, and it usually takes caretaker several attempts to even get a reaction out of them when they fall asleep.
occasionally they’ll wake up and get out of bed, but that’s only when they need to eat, bathe, or use the bathroom. And even then caretaker usually has to help feed them, bathe them, or make sure they don’t pass out on their way to the whenever they’re walking around.
other than that, whumpee is asleep, and stays asleep for a good while, maybe even over a week or two.

That moment when Whumper has knocked Whumpee to the ground and is standing over them, just waiting. When Whumpee finally tries to get up, they press them back down with a foot on the back. They don't hurt them yet. For now, it's all about power.

Characters being used as bait is one of my favorite whump, being caught between wanting rescue and hoping nobody shows up
Bonus points if they themselves got caught while keeping someone else out of harm’s way
Yesss 👏 Even better if somebody does show up and ends up failing to rescue them and getting captured too, so the bait has to feel the guilt for successfully reeling them in

"This won't hurt," doctor whumper tells whumpee, injecting the drug into their arm.
Whumpee swallows, "I know."
It does hurt. Every time. It's only gotten worse recently. But whumper knows what's best.
So whumpee grits through it, bears the pain. As their vision blurs, goes to dark. As they slump and whumper catches their body before they can fall.
Because the doctor always knows best.

You know, an emotional whump trope I never see is Whumpee crying while performing a relatively mundane task. They’re making food or doing laundry when the emotions just hit all at once.

Pspsps this is your sign to get real self-indulgent and design a fictional drug or illness that only does your favorite things, bc it's super fun and you don't have to do any research

I have a huge soft spot for a whumpee who’s a bit of a diva. A bit of a brat.
“You need a hospital.”
“Um no I need a cocktail.”

Ao3 needs a thousand more fics featuring a pairing in a cabin out in the woods, far from civilization, where one of them gets suddenly and disastrously struck with illness. Just totally burning up while it’s freezing winter outside, the caretaker worrying about having to journey outward for help. That’s it that’s the post

something i don’t see much of and want to see more of is the sounds of audibly shivering/being cold
it might be neglected because it’s harder to convey in writing without sounding kinda goofy, but i’m always a fan when something conveys sounds like:
the clatter of chattering teeth.
those short breathy bursts when someone gets a chill and shudders.
the little waver in someone’s voice as they battle the deep shivers in their core.
the rustle of fabric as someone tries to chafe warmth into chilled bones.
pls add more if you have any bc i just really like these details

Possessive Whumper who won't let anyone else hurt Whumpee. Who hunts down everyone that has ever hurt Whumpee and kills them in front of Whumpee. Whumper is the only one who can haunt their dreams.
"Shhh, Whumpee... the only thing you have to be afraid of now, is me."

actually the new superbat “this isn’t you 🥺” trope for when Clark goes evil should be Bruce putting his hand over Clark’s sparking/glowing eyes that are about to fire and closing them, entirely trusting that Clark won’t melt his hand off. and then Clark leans into the touch and lets the anger/magic/etc go as the heat sinks back into the capillaries around his eyes and dissipates.
