Proposal
I have discovered unexpected amount of experience in 3D and printmaking, learnt a list of new techniques like for example, “Heat press” “Linocut” “Collagraph” and “Screen-print”. In the first week, I personally found the brief quiet hard to understand but as the week went by I started ask people to help me understand the brief, what I need to include and implement in to my work. Therefor I got a better understanding of the brief and learnt to start think more creatively and deeper into the project. Found owned and broken didn’t have to be based just on materialistic things, it can contain feelings and thoughts too, for example clothing are not just materialistic things, clothing can also be a way to express yourself or show your mood on that day. One day you can be wearing lighter colours and shades because you feel happier, or another day you could feeling down or moody you’d wear normal or darker colours.
My project is going to be based on my clothing line which will be designed for the youth that are self-expressive and are looking for something new, it’s something I’ve never had experience in creating and this project will help me get a better insight of the world of fashion and manufacturing, which will benefit me in my future business career. This project will show the different skills and knowledge I have developed and gained throughout my year of learning. As for now it has taught me more about clothing, manufacturing and the process of it all, such like the size chart, which is the measurements and adjustments of my clothing that have been sent to the manufacture to be manufactured, also it has taught me how to digitally design using Photoshop. I’ll be putting all these new learnt skills into my final piece. For my final piece I’m going to create a high quality 100% cotton hoodie in very thin thickness so it’s able to be worn in summer since summer season is around the corner, the hoodie will also include a screen print of a skeleton with butterflies I have made with Photoshop. I chose screen printing instead of other printings methods such as digital printing is because screen printing is imbedded into the fabric which will never break off or come off other than fade off after a long period of time. This piece of clothing will be exhibited with a 3D sculpture to show the 3D form of the skeleton in its natural form to compliment the piece of clothing and it’s true art form.
I’m going to use this project sheet to reflect through my work and ensure that my work links to the brief and its concept. If there’s any changes added to the project, I will make sure to show the development and how I got to that point by including research, ideas, testing and annotations. I will be looking at my brief every week to ensure that I don’t drift away from what plans and ideas I’ve made for the project and ensure looking back into this project proposal sheet that I’m on the right track.

Process of the 3d skeleton
Tumblr media
This is a foam version of a skeleton that i’m thinking of molding but firstly I added double sided tape to the top half of the skeleton so i’m able to stick two parts together. This will prevent from top and bottom half of the skeleton to come out deformed.
Tumblr media
I desperately needed some type of equipment to box in the foam skeleton so i’m able to mold it fully and fill it up with plaster afterwards. Luckily I found a plastic sheet that was long enough, to the point where I was able to roll it up into a cylinder and tape up the sides to prevent from changing it’s form. Afterwards I placed a foam skeleton inside the skeleton but I made sure to leave 3cm of space for the skeleton so the silicone rubber can get full skeleton detailed features. Further more I placed a wooden plate under the cylinder plastic so i’m able to carry it and place it in a secure area from it being damaged. Then I started to apply clay at the bottom of the cylinder to avoid any leakage when I apply silicone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I bought silicone rubber, I calculated that 1.1kg kit will be enough to fill up the skeleton all the way to the top however my calculations were wrong and it didn’t even fill up 1/5 of the skeleton.
Tumblr media
These are the chemicals I used to make the mold of the skeleton. I firstly had to use a weighting scale to measure the kilograms, before I decide to mix the catalyst together with silicone. Catalyst is a chemical where if you mix it with silicone it speeds up the process of it hardening, there are 2 types of catalyst going from Green to fastest and Red to slowest. Green catalyst takes 20-30 minutes to harden the silicone and red takes about 40-50 minutes.

Shockingly the silicone started to leak because I didn’t apply clay properly, and didn’t look more into details where it could potentially leak. There’s was little holes that also wasn’t covered up properly. The second I noticed the leaked I ran to grab tissue to stop it from leaking and slowly applying the clay towards the plastic cylinder to stop it from leaking any further.

Extra process of the 3D skeleton experimentation
Tumblr media
This is the final result of the skeleton which went horribly wrong, As I didn’t have enough silicone rubber to fill up the whole skeleton. I have calculated wrong thinking 1.1kg of silicone will be enough to fill up the whole skeleton, However I needed at least 5kg to 6kg of silicone, that way it would’ve cost me over £200 pounds just for me to cast a whole skeleton, therefor it was not worth it at all. I have decided to look for problem solving.
Tumblr media
After a period of time I decided to go and try out Alginate. Alginate, also called Alginic acid can be found in the cell walls of brown seaweeds. The Alginate is often combined with water to create a viscous gum paste, perfect for creating moulds of teeth, hands, feet or other. Alginate has a unique ability to hold upwards of 200-300 times its own weight in water, making it a very natural jelly like soft substance. The alginate can be adapted to the thickness needed to perform the casting, making it a diverse product for casting, thickening. Therefor I thought it was a perfect idea to use alginate to cast, that way I would save a tons of money and still come out with the same results or even better.
Tumblr media
This measuring cup was used to mix the alginate with water, I didn’t exactly calculate how much water is needed for alginate to set while mixing but I poured small amounts of water every few mixes to see the progress of it’s settlement. Once it becomes this gooey type of substance.
Tumblr media
I have started to apply the alginate once it became ready onto the foam skull to see how the skull would turn out if I did it through this technique, I had to constantly push the alginate up to the top of the skull to stop from most % of the alginate just dripping down the table, till it started to harden. I did this to avoid the skull from having a very thin layering in some areas, that could potentially damage the mold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is how the mold have turned out, I felt extremely devastated and unhappy how terrible alginate picked up the detailing of the skull, which I thought could be because I did the skull modling it’s full form. Later in the time, I decided to cut the foam skull in half, and re-do the whole processing with alginate as alginate was my cheapest option.
Tumblr media
I started to re-apply the alginate again but this time for both parts, top and bottom half, and repeating the whole process of pushing alginate back to the top constantly to avoid further consequences with the mold.
Tumblr media
The moment alginate has hardened completely, I have decided to use Mod-Rock, applying strips of layers of mod rock on top of the alginate to give it’s full strength from breaking for later on, when applying plaster for modling.
