James whined softly, resting his chin upon the heel of his palm as he was softly lectured by Lily. “It’s not my fault that you’d look positively lovely in everything you mentioned. I mean, blame your parents wonderful genes for that,” he responded defensively. “But I liked the um, the muggle comic book one. With the bat. Wombat? No, that’s not it…” he trailed off, blinking as e tried to conjure up the name. “Woman bat!”

“I could have shown you a rubbish bin and you’d say it was the next big trend. But I’m sure my mum would be over the moon.” Lily rolled her eyes at the off handed compliment, though it was out of amusement than the typical annoyance, accompanied by a laugh. “Bat Woman! Put that on the list.” She pointed at the folder she kept the aforementioned list in, her hand making a tapping motion in air. “I hope you’ve been keeping up with these, I know I’ve given you a lot.”

Sirius merely cocked an eyebrow, not very impressed with Lily’s annoyance. “– I dunno maybe the fact that you’re out here alone when a muggleborn just got killed.” He shrugged as if it was common knowledge and it was. “You’re a smart girl, but you’re being absolutely so fucking stupid. If you wanted to go out and explore fine– but doing it alone? Even I’m smarter than that. I’m sorry that I seem to care about your well being more than you.” Sirius spit, acting angrier than he was. In fact he was more worried than anything, Lily had become a dear friend and for her to be strolling around at night for god knows what to grab her? That didn’t sit well with him.

 ...She really hated when Sirius was right. It happened a lot more than she would care to admit, and each time it was when she was the one making stupid decisions. They always seemed to balance each other out like that. Her stance loosened slightly, a sure sign that she was opening up to the idea that maybe he had a point. “Yeah, I guess you do,” she retorted after a moment. With that being said, she pushed off with her heel and started walking in the direction she was headed in before Sirius cut her off, turning around and walking backwards after a few feet to make sure the other was following. Her voice regained some of the playful quality it typically had with the other when she called back, “We don’t have all night, Black!”

Gryffindors were supposed to be brave. Or that’s what Mary kept telling herself, since the day they had found Terrance’s body Mary felt anything but brave. She felt like she had a target on her back seeing as she was a muggleborn. But she looked to all her other housemates and they seemed less than phased, her own friends included. So for awhile, Mary sat with her knees to her chest, hiding quiet cries of fear. Anytime she closed her eyes she saw herself where Terrance was. God, Mary wanted to be brave. Brave like…. Lily. Distraction was the key to success. As Lily had discovered early on in her life, it was easier to keep your mind busy until you were able to sort it out. It became harder as the years went on and her emotions seemed to grow a mind of their own, but it remained a tried and true method that she often fell back on when things got particularly complicated. Which was why instead of getting the sleep they desperately needed, green eyes scanned a passage of the book held tightly in her hands that described love in a way that made it seem both magical and sacrilegious, with a finger delicately following underneath each sentence to avoid the calamity of losing her spot. When Mary’s voice broke through the world Margaret Atwood’s words painted in Lily’s head, she jumped slightly out of shock. “Merlin, Mare, we need to get you a bell,” she chuckled. It took a few moments for her eyes to adjust to the faint glow the lumos she was using to read cast on Mary’s face, but upon noticing how upset the other looked any and all signs of mirth disappeared. Worry filled her voice, “I’m sorry, you’re upset and I’m making bad jokes. I’m a terrible best friend.”  Moving over so Mary had room, Lily’s book laid forgotten on her leg as she patted the spot next to her. “What’s wrong? Did you have a bad dream?”

“i could be saying the same thing to you. in fact, i should be saying the same thing to you.” lily took a step back, her arms crossed across her chest as she fought every urge to point at the prefect button pinned to her robes right now it was an accessory so no one asked why she was out. she had no excuse for being out other than her own inability to just leave things be like all the professors seemed to want them to. and her own damn curiosity got the best of her. so if she was going out to check out the ‘aurors’ for herself - well, sirius didn’t need to know that. "only if you tell me why you’re acting like such a prick nugget.”

Even though Rose wasn’t scheduled to have prefect rounds that night, she had decided to go check in on the prefects who were on duty, particularly Lily. Before leaving her dorm, she grabbed her prefect badge and pinned it to her robes, fully planning on lying about filling in for another prefect if she got cought by someone while looking for Lily. After having done rounds with the Gryffindor often enough, Rose knew the route she liked to take, and was able to catch up with Lily fairly quickly, even if that meant accidentally startling the redhead as she rounded a corner. Rosaline flashed her an easy smile, holding her hands up in defense. “I know, I know, but I needed to come check up on my wifey. Doesn’t that count as a good enough excuse? Besides,” she said, pointing to her badge, “no one would question me being out here with you.”

“rose --” lily wanted to be annoyed. but the company was much needed, lest she lose her sanity somewhere in the eon old tiles. and rounds were never dull with rose. so any annoyance she felt in the moments prior were expressed through a sigh and light shake of her head, the corners of her mouth tilted upwards. “i’m going to bloody hit you one of these days. but today,” she hooked her arm with rose’s, “i’m almost positive you’re my princess in shining armor. a few more minutes of this and you’d be visiting me in st. mungo’s.”

Thalia knew she shouldn’t have been out past curfew. She had absolutely no excuses to be wandering the halls so late at night - she wasn’t a prefect, she didn’t have permission, and she wasn’t being accompanied by anyone else. She’d broken pretty much every rule that had been put in place after the bonfire, but she was past the point of caring. She couldn’t fall asleep that night, unable to shake the feelings of restlessness and unease she felt. So without thinking twice about it, Thalia had thrown a jumper on over her pajamas, and had begun to wander the corridors aimlessly. That is, until she heard the voice of a prefect calling her out, and she froze. Turning around slowly, she felt a slight bit of relief at the sight of Lily, but not enough to completely calm her down. “Sorry.” She muttered, awkwardly stuffing her hands in her pockets. “I-I couldn’t sleep and I just… I needed to get out of the dorm. The door still doesn’t lock, because Merlin knows they’ll never fix it no matter how many times we complain, and it was… I didn’t feel safe in there, Lils.” The fear in Thalia’s voice was evident, and despite her best efforts to keep her composure, she had started shaking a bit, clearly rattled and caught off-guard.

it broke lily’s heart to see thalia so distraught. in all the years she’d known her, she couldn’t remember ever seeing thalia as upset as she was in that moment. it was a feeling that lily understood - each time she felt that fear creeping up on her, she found something to busy herself with so she wouldn’t have to be faced with it. being forced to do rounds alone when the other prefect failed to join was the first time she’d truly been alone since the news broke forth. she hated how on edge it was making her. her voice regained some of its usual softness when she spoke, worry now filling it, “that still doesn’t mean you should be alone, lee. do you know who else you could have run into? or how hurt you could’ve gotten?”
