Bo Sang Umbrella Festival in Northern Thailand
Tumblr media
Across Thailand, thousands of small craft villages dot the landscape. Each one specializes in the manufacture of a particular handicraft. Especially in northern Thailand, the choices seem endless. In tiny Ban Ton Pao in northern Thailand, everyone in the villages is involved in the production of handmade paper from Mulberry bark. In nearby Baan Tawai, the focus is on handmade furniture. Other villages produce lacquerware, silk clothing and linens, indigo dyed material, hand-woven baskets, hammered silver, jewelry, and more. But my all-time favorite is the village of Bo...

Shoyu Chicken with Hawaiian Mac Salad
Tumblr media
Have you ever been to a cookbook pot lucky party? I have to say, I think they’re brilliant. A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend a cookbook potluck where each attendee made a dish from a chosen book. I’ve seen a few on the Instagram and I’ve always been like, “hmm, that’s a good idea!!” What made it even better was all the recipes were supposed to be made from Aloha Kitchen! This book is so breathtakingly beautiful, from the photos of beautiful Hawaii to the food and recipes and the history lesson, it’s really amazing. Last year was the first time I had ever visited Hawaii and the minute I landed and was told we were having dinner on a former plantation, I had A LOT OF QUESTIONS. I honestly knew very little about Hawaii. So I did my usual quick history lesson on the car ride to the hotel and I didn’t learn nearly as much as I wanted to. Alana teaches the history seamlessly, interweaving it with food and how the cuisine and all of its vastness came about. I wanted to try SO many of the recipes but I settled on this Shoyu […]

Personal Note from Julie: Are You Interested in Becoming a Virtual Assistant?
There has been a lot of buzz in several of the Facebook and LinkedIn admin groups recently about virtual assistance. People have been asking, “How do I become a virtual assistant (VA)?” “Where do I find clients as a VA?” “Can I do VA work on the side and still work at my corporate job?” The questions just keep coming.
When I first started my VA business in 2005, there were less than 4,000 VAs worldwide. Today, based on freelancing platform data, professional association stats, I’d estimate there are 100,000+ VAs working in various capacities. Some are contracting with third-party freelancing sites, like Upwork or Freelancer, some are operating a side hustle while working full-time, and there are countless others running full-time virtual assistant businesses.
If virtual assistance is something you want to learn more about, we’re sharing a lot of great tips and strategies on our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages this week. You can also get more information in this week’s feature article where I’m answering some common VA questions.

5 Tips for Becoming a Virtual Assistant
One question I get asked a lot is, “How do I get started as a virtual assistant?”
Many admins are eager for advice on how to strike out on their own and begin their virtual assistant business. Yet they don’t know where to start.
While there’s no exact science behind becoming a VA, there are several things you can do to make the process a smoother, more successful one.
1. Network. Tap your personal and professional network to find clients and work. Reach out to former colleagues, friends, and family and ask if they or anyone they know needs a VA. This is a great way to generate new business, whether you’re a veteran VA or just getting started.
2. Subcontract. If you know someone who is a VA, ask them if they’re willing to subcontract work out to you. Also, don’t be shy about striking up new relationships with experienced VAs and inquiring about work. Most VAs are more than happy to help out someone who is new to the field. And even if they don’t have any subcontracting work, they may be able to refer you to someone who does.
3. Join online VA groups. There are a lot of VA groups on the web and social media that offer advice, resources, and even job listings. VaNetworking.com and the International Virtual Assistants Association are both excellent options. Do some research and find the groups that best fit your needs. Then get active in their forums and on social media.
4. Read and Research. There are several helpful books out there for virtual assistants, including Virtually Successful: 8 Simple Ways for Virtual Assistants to Find (And Keep) Clients and The Bootstrap VA: The Go-Getter’s Guide to Becoming a Virtual Assistant Getting and Keeping Clients, and More! Pick up one of these books and gain some valuable knowledge about the VA world. You can also check out VA blogs and websites for additional reading.
5. Create your plan and implement! When you choose to become a VA, you are choosing to run your own business. This means you need a plan and the drive to implement it! Before I launched my VA business, I built up a transition fund to support any gap in income, and provide some startup capital to launch my company. I invested in a logo and branding, professional headshots, competent legal advice, two certifications, and website development training. Having a plan made all the difference in starting my business because I had a solid foundation from day one.
Whether you’re nearing retirement and looking for your second act, you’re between jobs, or you simply want to be your own boss, being a VA can be an excellent career move. So, if you’re entertaining the idea of starting your own VA business, I strongly encourage you to pursue the opportunity! You never know where it might lead you. I’m living proof of that!

Brunei – To Visit or Not, Given the New Sharia Law
Tumblr media
On April 3, 2019, the Sultan of Brunei imposed Islamic sharia law on all residents of the country, including the 30% of the population who are not Muslims. In a nutshell, this means that people will be whipped or stoned to death for gay sex, adultery, sodomy, and rape, and the crime of theft will require a hand and a foot to be cut off. This is an escalation of previous laws, which carried a sentence of 10 years in prison for anyone caught in the act of...

Carrot Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting
Tumblr media
I’m not gonna front, these carrot cupcakes are THIS carrot sheet cake recipe in cupcake form. A lot of people have asked me “can I make this sheet cake into cupcakes?” The answer is absolutely! It’s as simple as making the batter and putting it into cupcake liners. But listen, I know that might sound more than easy but sometimes we have to see it in its transformed state in order to actually be inspired to make it you know? Here they are transformed! These cupcakes are so delicious and if you want something sort of bite-sized for your brunch situation, then these are it for you! I love carrot cake. It is divine. And it’s always been incredibly high on my list of things to make when the weather starts to get a bit nicer. I love the bits of carrot, crunchy walnuts and large quick bread-like crumb. The cream cheese frosting is thick but also super fluffy (thanks to the heavy cream that’s whipped in there) and then I made a strong buttercream for the anemone flowers. Those are totally extra credit and absolutely unnecessary! I made them, mixing in a few colors to make them a bit […]

7 Simple Strategies that Will Make You a Travel Planning Pro
Travel planning is a part of the job for most administrative professionals today. So it’s important to stay up to date on the latest best practices and resources available for coordinating travel. But with a wealth of technology, tools, and other resources out there, it can be challenging to stay on top of it all. These strategies can help you keep your travel planning skills sharp and become a travel planning pro!
1. Regularly read travel websites, blogs, newsletters, and magazines. These publications often share the latest tools, tricks, and ideas for successfully planning travel. There are a lot of resources out there, though. So figure out which ones work best for the types of travel you coordinate and use them! Some of my favorites include:
Websites:
Christopher Elliott, Consumer Advocate: www.elliott.org
www.frommers.com
www.lonelyplanet.com
www.tripadvisor.com
www.orbitz.com
www.cruisecritic.com
www.cruisedeals.com
www.seatguru.com
www.flightstats.com
http://hotelandtravelindex.travelweekly.com/
www.bedbugregistry.com
www.landlopers.com
Read Magazines and Industry Publications
Business Travel News:  www.businesstravelnews.com
Meetings and Conventions:  www.meetings-conventions.com
Successful Meetings: www.successfulmeetings.com
Smart Meetings: www.smartmeetings.com
Midwest Meetings: www.MidwestMeetings.com
Travel Weekly: www.TravelWeekly.com
Incentive Magazine: www.IncentiveMag.com
Must Read Articles and Ebooks:
Savoya.com Ebook: https://www2.savoya.com/executive-travel-management-guide
AudaciousAdmin.com  http://www.audaciousadmin.com/blog/executive-dossier
OfficeDynamics.com https://officedynamics.com/comprehensive-business-travel-planning/
     2. Follow travel planning experts and service providers on social media. Social media is an excellent tool for keeping track of travel resources. Search Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn for the airlines, ground transportation companies, hotels, and other travel resources you regularly use. Then follow, like, or connect with them so you can stay up-to-date on the latest news, trends, and tips.
3. Attend travel events and conferences. There are numerous annual events and conferences that are hosted by travel or trade groups. Some of my recommendations include HSMAI’s Events and Meeting Professionals International. Some of these organizations also offer free or low-cost online training with industry experts – so keep a look out for those opportunities and take advantage of them when they’re available.
4. Conduct online research. If you have a pressing travel question, trying checking to see what you can learn on your own online. There are numerous travel review sites that often have advice and tips from experienced travelers.
5. Use a travel agent. Most travel agents are subject matter experts on destinations around the world. And reputable agencies regularly invest in training their agents and sending them to various destinations so they can share firsthand experiences with you. Use their wealth of knowledge and expand yours at the same time!
6. Ask other travelers. Getting advice from other travelers is one of the best ways to become a better travel planner. Ask as many people as you can about their experiences, what they enjoyed, what they’d do again, and what to avoid.
7. Get out there and explore! One of the best ways to become a better travel planner is to travel yourself. It can give you a new appreciation for the details that go into the planning process. You’ll also better understand the stress associated with various types of travel, as well as the importance of preparing your executive for a trip.

10 Cozy Things to Make for Easter
Tumblr media
I completely forgot to post a ’10 Cozy Things to Make in April’! WHAA! I don’t get where my brain was but it wasn’t working apparently. Easter is next weekend so I figured I’d skip to what you should make for Easter vs. April. TBH I don’t even know what I’m doing for Easter. Josh is throwing a pop-up and I’ve promised to be the hostess and make the flower arrangements. I’m guessing I’ll be totally exhausted and will most likely wanna stay in bed. We shall see! Overnight Cinnamon Rolls – But I also might make a batch of these rolls the day before and bake them up the morning of so who knows! Conchas – SOOO many of you made these conchas and I love seeing everyone’s iterations, with the different toppings. Instant Pot Lamb Shank – I made this last year and it was so delicious. The Instant Pot is a true time-saver and the chipotle sauce is something I make all the time. Cappuccino-Flavored Rose Cupcakes – These cupcakes are so delicious. White fluffy cake and mocha-flavored cake layered together to make the perfect “cappuccino.” Strawberry Sheet Cake with Rhubarb Frosting – One of the most […]

Lemon Berry Meringue Trifle
Tumblr media
This is the first ever trifle I’ve ever made! Some of you will probably be shocked, appalled, stunned. And the other half of you probably don’t know what a trifle is. Don’t worry, I will explain. In my extensive trifle internet research I read that trifles are very much English. And they do very much remind me of an eton’s mess. But just on a grander, larger scale, which I am very into. Especially since we’re in the thick of spring, which means Easter, brunches and gatherings. For this post, I teamed up with Pyrex and their new line of Pyrex Deep baking dishes. I love Pyrex so much and use their products daily. Their Deep line is extra special because it is up to 50% deeper – meaning you can fit even more pasta (for pasta bakes), a bigger roast (for Easter) and even more layers (for trifles). I also love that they all come with super secure lids so you can take to your friends’ and families’ houses and you don’t have to worry about spillage. I love all of their products; everything from their glass dishes for storing leftovers to measuring cups—they’re all amazing and affordable. These […]

Personal Note from Julie: You Need This if You Don’t Want to Leave Your Career to Chance!
If you received a call today from a recruiter with a lead for your dream job, how quickly could you get an updated resume to them? Do you have a professional portfolio of work samples to visually showcase your skills in an interview? Does your LinkedIn profile include a professional headshot and your current accomplishments?
If you want to be ready for career advancement and development, you need to have an updated job search toolkit. And if you need help developing one, this week’s feature article is for you!
When I wrote The Organized Admin
Tumblr media

Yet many admins don’t regularly update these key career elements, or – worse yet – they don’t have them at all. So, this week, our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages are focusing on the importance of having a job search toolkit, and how to create and consistently update yours.
I also encourage you to watch the free webinar I did yesterday, Spotlight Your Career: 3 Strategies for Boosting Your Professional Visibility. (You can get the replay here). Then, join us for our free 5-Day Challenge starting on Monday, April 15. I’ll personally help you create a powerful professional portfolio to showcase your skills and career accomplishments. It’s all free – but you must register no later than Sunday, April 14! After that, it will cost $67 to participate.
Don’t leave your career to chance. Put yourself in the driver’s seat, and create your job search toolkit so you’re ready for any opportunity that comes your way!

Prepare for Career Transitions with a Job Search Toolkit
No matter how well you perform your job duties, no position is ever really safe. Even the most outstanding administrative professional can lose their job, through no fault of their own, at any given time. Your company could go out of business. Your executive may retire or transfer. A merger could render your job redundant.
No one likes to think about the rug being pulled out from under them. But if the unthinkable happens, you need to be ready to immediately start applying for new jobs.
Losing your job is stressful enough – you don’t want to compound that stress by having to quickly pull together everything you need to find a new position. That’s why it’s so important to have a current job search toolkit ready at all times.
What is a Job Search Toolkit?
A job search toolkit contains everything you need to be prepared for any career change, whether due to circumstances beyond your control or because your dream job suddenly became available. At the minimum, it should contain:
A current resume
A cover letter template that can be easily customized for any position
Your updated professional portfolio
A complete LinkedIn profile
Professional business cards
Resume
Whenever I attend speaking engagements, I’m always shocked at the number of people who don’t have a current resume. Some don’t have a resume at all!
It’s helpful to think of your resume as a living document. As you learn, grow, and add to your skills set, your resume should reflect those changes. The same goes for major projects and career milestones – you need to add these accomplishments to your resume. You want to highlight the measurable results you have accomplished, not just duties performed for each job on your resume.
Other areas you may want to highlight on your resume include leadership positions, professional association memberships, honors and awards, or specific areas of expertise.   I recommend reviewing your resume every three months and updating it as necessary.
Cover Letter
Despite what you may have heard, the cover letter is not dead. It’s still a vital component of your job search toolkit, and a way to introduce yourself and highlight your skills.
When creating your cover letter, make sure you have two separate versions – a formal one that can be printed, and an electronic version for companies that utilize online submission portals.
While both should contain similar information, your formal cover letter can go a bit more in-depth than the electronic version since online submissions tend to have max word counts.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach for a cover letter. It must be specifically tailored for each job. However, the basic template remains the same.
First paragraph: Introduce yourself. Briefly explain who you are, what position you’re applying for, and how you found out about the job.
Second paragraph: Explain why you’re a good fit for the position. What makes you the best person for the job? It’s helpful if you use verbiage straight from the job listing and find a way to directly tie your skills and experience to the job description.
Third paragraph: Suggest an action, such as a phone call or an interview. And don’t forget to thank them for their consideration.
Create a basic cover letter template with all your pertinent information, then simply customize it to each position.
Professional Portfolio
Your resume is a place to tell a potential employer what you can do. Your professional portfolio, however, is a place to prove it.
Anything you have done related to your career should be documented in your professional portfolio. Some options you may want to consider include:
Resume
Personality type or StrengthsFinder assessments
Past performance reviews
Forms
Writing/communication samples
Templates
Checklists
Project plans
Before-and-after screenshots of databases you made more user-friendly or spreadsheets you formatted
Procedures
Graphics
Websites
Course agendas and certificates from continuing education
Copies of diplomas or a relevant course syllabus or transcript (if applicable)
Letters of recommendation
Screenshots of LinkedIn recommendations
Professional association memberships and leadership roles held (if applicable)
Volunteer work
Awards and recognitions
I suggest having two versions of your professional portfolio – a physical version in a three-ring notebook, and an online version that potential employers can access. As with your resume, this should be a living document that’s updated on a consistent basis.
LinkedIn Profile
We live in an increasingly digital world, and it’s important for administrative professionals to adapt to it. LinkedIn is a phenomenal job search tool, and if you don’t already have a profile, you need to create one as soon as possible.
One of the things I love about LinkedIn is that it’s a two-way street. While it’s a great way to find jobs, it’s also a way for great jobs to find you. But to maximize your success on LinkedIn, you need a polished, professional profile.
Here are some of my tips for a standout LinkedIn profile:
Use a professional photo. While candid photos are fine for your personal social media pages, it’s important to have a professional-looking headshot for LinkedIn. Appearances matter!
Include elements from your resume. Your educational background and current and past job experience should be in your profile. This allows potential employers to quickly determine if you’re someone they should consider. If this information isn’t included, they’ll likely pass.
Strut your stuff. LinkedIn encourages you to list your awards, honors, and skills. Don’t be shy! There’s nothing wrong with showcasing your accomplishments.
Put your personality on display. LinkedIn is a professional site, but that doesn’t mean you need to pretend to be a corporate robot. Most employers are looking for a real person. Feel free to add some personal interests.
Ask for endorsements. Once your LinkedIn profile is up, ask your connections for endorsements or recommendations. The more people who legitimately and honestly vouch for you and your skills, the better.
Remember, adding more information to your profile will give you a better chance of being seen by the right people!
Personal Business Cards
You never know when an opportunity will arise. Personal business cards allow you to be ready for a quick exchange of information at any time.
Having your own business card, separate from those potentially offered by your company, is a must-have for your job search toolkit. These cards should include your name, phone number, email, and links to your professional social media pages and online portfolio. You may also want to add your professional branding statement, areas of expertise, or other important details.
Your business cards don’t need to be fancy or expensive – there are plenty of online templates that allow you to create and print them at home.
Don’t Be Caught Unprepared!
A job search toolkit is the best safety net you can have when it comes to an unexpected job loss. It allows you to make your next move much quicker, so you can jump into the job search with very little downtime. It’s also helpful when a promotion or new position becomes available, so you can be one of the first submissions and stand out from the crowd!
Are you ready to create or update your job search toolkit? These free resources will help you get started! And don’t forget to take our Career Preparedness Quiz for additional insight on where you stand and what you can do to better your position.
For even more tips and resources, I highly encourage you to check out my book, The Organized Admin

PHOTO: The “Floating” Kota Kinabalu City Mosque in Sabah, Malaysia
Tumblr media
Kota Kinabalu City Mosque was the highlight of my half-day tour of Kota Kinabalu (KK), capital of the Malaysian State of Sabah on the island of Borneo. The mirror image of the mosque reflected in its surrounding lagoon has earned it the nickname “floating mosque.” Knowing my tour would include a stop at an important Islamic religious site, I had dressed respectfully in long pants and short-sleeved T-shirt. Upon arrival, however, I found I had not dressed conservatively enough. Women are required to cover their arms from shoulder...

Toasted Coconut Almond Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
Tumblr media
(This post is sponsored by ALDI. Thanks for supporting the sponsors that keep A Cozy Kitchen cozy.) Spring has sprung and I am INTO IT. I am in full baking maniac-mode and it’s so fun. I love making things with spring flavors and spring produce. It makes me so happy. I especially am very into making things with Easter in mind, considering it’s one of my favorite holidays to cook/bake for. I’ve been wanting to make a coconut cake for a loooong time and figured adding toasted almonds to it would make it a million times better. I was right! For this post, I teamed up with ALDI you know that it is the best place to stock up on baking ingredients. I always go there and buy double, triple of everything. On this particular trip, I went and purchased organic brown eggs, flour, sugar, coconut flakes, almonds and cream cheese. It was a one-stop shop for all things cute. I also baked it in this 9×9-inch Crofton Speckled Bakeware square pan that was super cute. Another amazing thing about ALDI is that it is on Instacart, which is a huge time-saver and easy convenience. (If you want, use code “ALDIACK” […]

Personal Note from Julie: It’s Here! Are You Ready to Celebrate Admin Appreciation Month?
It’s Admin Appreciation Month at All Things Admin! And we are so excited about all of the awesome training opportunities and admin recognition events happening for you in April! To help you keep track of what’s available, we’ve created our annual Admin Appreciation Month Celebrating Admins page to keep you connected.
As I’ve been traveling and speaking during the past few months, I’ve been polling my audiences about what they’re doing to stay prepared for career opportunities and job changes. Some of the questions I’ve asked include:
How recently have you updated your resume?
What is the state of your LinkedIn profile?
Do you have a professional portfolio of work samples?
The responses have been quite concerning.
Only about 20% of respondents have a resume that is current and ready to submit.
About 30% of respondents haven’t updated their resume for years!
Approximately 25% of respondents don’t have a LinkedIn profile, or haven’t updated it in years.
85% of respondents do not have a professional portfolio of work samples.
Your resume, a LinkedIn profile, and a professional portfolio are the three most important tools of your career toolkit! And you need all three of them ready to use at a moment’s notice.
So, to help you proactively put the spotlight on you and your career, I am doing a free webinar and 5-day challenge to get you started with your portfolio development process!
Free Webinar: Wednesday, April 10, 2019
Free 5-Day Challenge: April 15 – 19, 2019
In order to get both the webinar and 5-day challenge for free, you must register by Sunday, April 14! After April 14, there will be a fee to participate.
Throughout April, we’re going to be focusing on you and the administrative profession by sharing some of the fabulous feedback from our #AdminProud survey. My team and I have been enjoying your responses immensely, and we can’t wait to feature some of them on our website and social media. Make sure to connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to share in the fun!
