HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Still an hour or so away for me, but I thought I might as well wish you all a thunderous New Year’s Eve and the what the new year brings isn’t too shocking. Honestly, I can genuinely say you’re pretty much all fantastic - and that isn’t just the copious amounts of alcohol I’m likely imbibing right at this second. If you couldn’t already tell from those terrible puns. I seriously want to thank you for following me and for welcoming back in to the rp fold after being away. Tumblr is a terrible place, but each of you make it surprisingly tolerable. My new year’s resolution is to pay you back in spades*. I might be on discord a little later to wish you all some further drunken tidings, so look forward to that. Otherwise, I’ll see you in 2019.

“I expected things to be different in the future, but you really don’t celebrate Christmas?” Being that it was the Girl of Steel’s favorite earthling holiday, it was hard to accept that it wasn’t being celebrated. “What do you celebrate instead?”

❝ Uh, not a whole lot, really. ❞ Garth mused, raking the edge of his jaw with his thumbnail.  It sounded a little damning when it was said out loud, but the simple fact was the Legion was recruited from a whole host of different worlds and cultures from across the length and breadth of the United Planets. It was difficult to find one that applied across the board. ❝ No one is gonna hold it against you if you want to celebrate it, though. It’s kinda been illegal to chop the real thing down for a few centuries now, but I could probably convince Brainy to fabricate you a tree if you want ? ❞

        The utter confusion she felt at his statement must have been obvious but she tried to laugh it off. “ Well… Alright then, I guess I will add that to my list of rules. Oh, Peej is… Peej is in space, I’m pretty sure. Or, maybe she’s just attending to her own business, but - yeah, if you stick around you’re bound to run into her. ” The Society member did her best not to read into his comment on Thom’s status. Instead she offered a thin smile before continuing in a clipped tone. “ Well, we DID ask him to join us, I was even one of the members who was sent to recruit him. I assume he’ll put in a good word for you, so maybe we will take you into our fold. I’m Stargirl, by the way, so sorry I forgot to introduce myself. What did you say your name was? ”

A consummate veteran of rubbing people the wrong way, it wasn’t difficult for Garth to notice the subtle shift in the Stargirl’s demeanor. The sudden brusqueness in her voice causing him to wince in turn. Less than two minutes. Hardly a record as things went, but it wasn’t far off. ❝ Uh, Lighting Lad, but most people just call me Garth Ranzz these days. At least to my face.❞ It was a weak joke, but perhaps dragging himself a little would offset his earlier transgression. Ideally he preferred to get on a prospective team’s bad side at least two weeks in.  ❝ If you’re Stargirl, I guess that would make that fancy stick the Cosmic Rod ? I thought I recognized it. R.J. used to have - will have? - a replica in his office, right across from the Wonder Woman holo display. ❞

      “Yes, because Saturn Girl makes sure to cover you.”

She sighs. Perhaps Tinya was right. She needs to be more sociable.

       “What is it you need, Garth?”

❝ That’s just how we flirt. She has a thing for rugged damsels. ❞ The legionnaire quipped without missing a beat, knowing full well he’d pay for the remark later once the Titanian was back within telepathic range.   ❝ Less what I need, more what I can do for you. I’m hoping if I take your next roster duty, you’ll be free to work your magic on Lar and get him to lighten up.❞  

Knowing that she wouldn’t take his supposed altruism on face value alone, he elaborated with a shrug. ❝ The man is kinda driving everyone crazy with this overbearing, micromanaging leader routine he’s got going on right now. He’s going full on Brainy. ❞

‘ i don’t know who i am. ’

SOFT ANGST STARTERS  ᴸ  STATUS: Accepting ❝That’s because you’re a twelfth level idiot that spends half his life swooshing his cape and the other half with his head up his shebs. ❞  If there was something to be said about the tough love approach, there was fair chance Garth would be the one saying it. Doing a valiant job of suppressing the wince that threatened to take over his face as he punched the daxamite roughly on the shoulder, somehow momentarily forgetting the man’s almost legendary invulnerability. A fact his bruised fingers would no doubt remind him of later. The unspoken sacrifices one had to make in the name of his friends. 

 ❝ You don’t need to know who you are, that’s what you keep us around for. You’re Mon-El, the passable Legionnaire known as Valor. Women want to be you, men want to date you, aliens are…❞ He made a mock hissing sound between his teeth, rolling his shoulders in a rough approximation of a shrug. ❝ Well, they’re admittedly mixed on their reviews, but I mean, everyone has critics, right ? You just need to know that you got this. ❞

The question caught him off guard, causing a momentary crack to appear in the otherwise impenetrable nonchalant facade he had fashioned around himself. The lazy habitual smirk he wore so easily melting away to a reveal a tentative frown, as genuine as it was fleeting, vanishing as quickly as it appeared as the legionnaire forced the walls back up. It simply wouldn’t do to show your literal hero that you were just that scared kid from Winath. So he did what he always did, crack wise and hope it somehow managed to covered the despair that lingered just a hairsbreadth beneath the surface.  ❝ You mean, beside the s m e l l ? I seriously grew up on a farm that smelled better than this century. ❞

❝ What, you mean time travelling superheroes aren’t your normal, everyday occurrence ? ❞ As reassurances went, sardonic responses probably wasn’t what the detective was looking for right about now. Imra, Rokk, Mon-El, they would know what to say at a time like this. They always had a way of finding the right words to both inspire and make you feel at ease. It was practically a superpower. The Winathian shifted his weight from one foot to the next, struggling to find even a scrap of that power right now. ❝ Listen, I was just a dumb kid from a farm out for a joyride when I ended up with these abilities. Trust me, I know all about the very strange times. You’re doing just fine. ❞
