Nothing complicated, just a 5x7 inch forest painting with lynx.  I love the splintered light at golden hour in the woods, knowing the last segment of your hike back to the trailhead will be in twilight, looking forward to a meal cooked over an open campfire…

My Father’s Secret by Winona Nelson - oil on masonite, 4 x 4 inches front, 2.5 x 2.5 inches back

It wasn’t until I was almost 30 years old that my father revealed that he had been in the Vietnam War.  He would speak often of his time in the Navy, but only recount his postings in San Francisco and Hawaii, leaving out his time in combat.  As is often the case with Indigenous veterans, his feelings on his involvement in the war were very conflicted.  I love my father dearly and knowing he had hidden these scars for so long breaks my heart.
