conflating carmilla and Liz was a poor idea, full stop, because while vlad tepes does explicitly inspire the literary dracula down to his home of origin and name, literary carmilla has none of the same links.
Her story takes place in Austria and Bathory was a Hungarian Countess, her method of claiming victims involves becoming intimately intwined with them in one on one manner (vs Bathory’s misuse of her status as a ruler to target servants and her subordinates), Bathory allegedly did what she did to preserve her youth while Carmilla’s actions carry no such motive, like the only real common thread they have is that they were both women who targeted and killed other women in Europe.
The only other thing is that popular culture has sometimes combined or conflated them them before (notably in series like castlevania) because saying that two famous literary vampires were inspired by infamous historical figures just sounds good. But there simply is not enough to suggest that is the case for Carmilla, she’s just a vampiric noblewomen.

I came here to rant. About a certain Webtoon community. I’ve been apart of their server for a minute now, and I’ve countless countless times seen the mods abuse their powers, or certain higher ranked people (patron) act as if they’re mods. Patrons can do whatever they please, and they get maybe a slap on the wrist. I shared an opinion about the new seasons of this webtoon and immediately had about 2 mods and maybe 4 of their patron members calling me stupid, illiterate to media, asked for my age and told me I was neurodivergent. Simply for stating the fact I felt the characters were out of character the new season because they very much are . And yet they allow any patron or mod to say whatever they please. And not just an issue with me, the mods got into an argument with another member for posting a gif calling it innapropriate (it was a gif of a man sliding toward his women, a very common meme at the time which very much was not innapropriate), despite the fact the creators have posted pictures of their characters in bunny suits and the entire series was way more sexual than the gif by miles. I’ve seen the mods neglect their job and I find it very saddening the fact they can’t see that. There’s also a specific member who’s constantly acting like they’re some sort of high mighty guard dog when I promise you you’re not. I enjoyed this series so much and was a patron at one point, but with the creators actions (that deserves a whole different post), the mods neglect and abuse, and the other patrons influence I can’t even feel the need to enjoy the series.

Bit of a rant, but can we normalize being nice about your opinions?? There’s this account on TT that I won’t name, but their ENTIRE account is claiming to be a “Starlight Express fan page” but all they do is hate on the Wembley 2024 revival. I know people don’t like it, I get why people don’t like it, I understand why people criticize it. But when your ENTIRE presence online is hating- not critiquing- a version of the show you don’t like, making fun of the cast, and ignoring when the cast and their friends comments on your videos telling you to stop being an asshole, that’s going far beyond not liking something. And people try to involve the Bochum cast in this as well! They’ll comment on their videos like “yeah, this is SO much better than the London version!” like, do you not think that makes them uncomfortable? And most of the people who do stuff like this are the same people who hated on 2018 Bochum changes for years, but all of a sudden you LOVE it just because you don’t like the current version? I’m not saying you’re not allowed to share your dislike of London 2024 just because the cast is active on social media and your criticisms might hurt their feelings, but just be a decent person about it. If you don’t like London 2024, don’t comment on the cast’s videos telling them their show sucks. That’s not just “sharing your opinion,” that’s being an asshole. Say you don’t like it, say why you don’t like it. But don’t make fun of the cast and involve cast from versions you like more into it.

I don’t know if this is a hot take or not- or even if other people think about this- but the part in older choreography of Pumping Iron with the women on their hands and knees pisses me off so much. I don’t know why, but it makes me irrationally angry

I think I figured out what my issue with nosferatu is that prevents me from giving it five stars even though it is probably my favorite movie of the year: as a lesbian who grew up so ashamed of my desire for women that I convinced myself that desire was evil and what I felt around men (a mix of dread and envy) was somehow purer I just don’t see how it’s that shameful for a woman to have desire for men, even if it is the Victorian era, because that’s still who you’re expected to have socially-acceptable sex with.
Socially acceptable sex is still an option for women attracted to men and I can’t relate to that. My attempts at socially acceptable sexuality were deeply monstrous and traumatizing because I did not truly want to be there, I just wanted to prove I wasn’t as monstrous as I believed my desires made me. If I felt that way in the 21st century, imagine how monstrous a lesbian would feel in the Victorian era when the prevailing belief was that respectable women were incapable of sexual desire and could only ever be sexual with their husbands. A woman experiencing lesbian desire at that time would be made to feel like a predator rather than prey (regardless of the dynamic in reality) which is far more compelling to me under the lens of monstrous sexuality.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Carmilla pre-dates Dracula. I’m glad Eggers’ take on Nosferatu did somewhat engage with the queerness of the original with Thomas but it feels incomplete to tell a story about monstrous female sexuality that is only about wanting what society does, at the end of the day, want for you within the bounds of marriage.
