Moving Blogs!

Hey y’all I switch blogs about once a year and it is Time To Start Over!

one of the most important skills to learn for both personal growth and social change is to tend to our own wounds–and that includes experiencing our full range of emotions as well as having boundaries–and at the same be willing to look at the ways we wound others. just bc we are hurt by people or by systems doesn’t mean that we can’t also hurt people and benefit from systems which harm others. we are growing, but being victims doesn’t make us saints.

this is really scary, especially if we’ve been traumatized and our skills for coping involve a lot of black & white protective thinking (eg we were treated as tho we were worthless, so now we’re intolerant of criticism). but we have to trust our practices of kindness, trust that we can be imperfect without spiraling into self-hatred. to admit that we’re fallible is not to relinquish our boundaries or our worth. we can be in the wrong and retain all that value we’ve worked to see in ourselves. 

so whether we’re anorexics trying to be less fatphobic, white women confronting misogynoir, childhood abuse survivors dealing with our harmful relationship patterns, or whatever else, compassion for others doesn’t mean rejecting ourselves. we retain our intrinsic value as we confront these things. this is what frees us to practice intellectual honesty and openness.

I’ve read and watched a lot of horror/thriller/scary media and I still say, with no irony at all, that the “children’s stories made horrifying” about curious george by daniel mallory ortberg was the scariest fucking thing I’ve ever read
