I should properly say that I'm already overthinking this AU & doing research as if I'm writing an actual release. I really am scared to be wrong/offensive. IM LITERALLY NOT A WRITER (But i would make a doc on this)

Going back to TAD in modern day. Everything next is just me spitballing a vague ideas for discussion. Not a novel book format. A lot of silly ideas

Rear Palace

While monarchy and polygyny still somewhat existing today, I doubt it'd be satisfying or modern to just keep that aspect. Instead, the Rear Palace could be a high-class closed off city for either Old Political families or Influential Celebrity families. Or Mafia. I didn't pick yet...

In any of these cases, Lakan could still be the head of the La family, which either serves under or is indebted to the "Emperor's" family (idk what to call this guy). The La family could be famous for having many intellectual and wealthy people in several professions. Lakan in particular could be the Head of a long-standing and prominent security company, which is also responsible for protecting and monitoring this city.

Concubines could be just potential brides for the "Emperor", the head of the most influential family there, the one which founded the city. Children out of wedlock? Just keep them a secret from the country. The city might know secret, but who are they to spread this info outside without permission. It's not like noone else there has career shattering secrets of their own they wish to keep. (Mutual blackmail, LETSGO)

Eunuchs can just be cut out, since every one of their worker is contractually bound, + cameras exist. They'll just collectively hound the workers from outside if they try anything funny. And workplace relationship are prohibited too, just in case.

Jinshi could also (pretend to) be one of the contract workers who just happens to be Head of Internat Security. But before this i also had a joking idea that Jinshi just pretends to be gay (i mean, he still has women clinging to him, but the reason could be this)

Red Light District

No idea if this modern AU should be based in an imaginary country or a real one, BUT, either way, I'd still say that the Red Light District should stay the same in concept. Even if prostitution is illegal in most parts of the world, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Maomao would still be an illegitimate child of a prostitute and Lakan. She would still respect the sex workers' job. She would also learn basic customer service and about sex.

Loumen was also once part of the famous La family, specifically an up-and-coming doctor in pharmaceuticals, but he got quickly kicked out when his degree didn't pay off, after the sudden death of one the family's son. While physically and legal punishment was not part of it, Loumen would still likely be ganged up on by those who knew he was responsible, leaving him with a severely damaged leg, and family support would be out of the question back then. With the great respect for his uncle, Lakan would try to provide any support he could, even offer to pay for the leg surgery, but Loumen would still refuse to accept.

TAD Modern AU idea

Loumen and Maomao run a local (underground) pharmacy / medical center, because the hospital prescribed overpriced medicine is not available to all in need around them. They low prices might be ruining their business, but Loumen never cared for that. They could be both producing medicines and smuggling some in.

Either way, an underground pharmacy will inevitably become connected to some criminal activity, even if it's just because they treat any patient they get without care for one's background.

One could definitely use that info as blackmail against the young medical student and her poor father, especially when she gets kidnapped.
