Billy keeps all the little things of their relationship. The movie tickets, the petals of a flower Steve gave him, every photo of them, the receipt for when they had to go buy more condoms at 3am, an arcade ticket, a bowling score sheet, even a note Steve left him one time about meeting him after school. All of it because he has never had anything like this, someone who he wants to remember and keep forever.

i like to imagine a roadtrip au where steve prefers to drive at night and billy prefers to drive during the day, especially early morning. steve drives them through dimly lit backroads in the middle of nowhere without getting them lost. he lets the radio play softly, barely noticeable as billy rests next to him. when the sky turns faint bllue at dawn, they switch. billy wakes to the world going from grey and colorless to bright and full of life. next to him, steve’s hair catches the morning light.

they get coffee and greasy bacon and eggs at what feels like the same diner they’ve visited for the fifth time. time seems to stand still and move on simultaneously. maybe they’ll stumble across a motel in the evening. or maybe steve will drive them through the night again.
