Deep-sea light show brought to you by corals 🎇🪸⁠

In 2020, a team of MBARI researchers filmed bioluminescence from a variety of deep octocorals in their own habitat for the first time. The scientists worked with the pilots of the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Doc Ricketts to equip the vehicle with an extremely light-sensitive video camera.

Since many animals only glow when disturbed, they filmed the animals while gently touching them with the ROV’s manipulator arm or a soft paintbrush. They found that many of the most common deep-sea corals can create their own light, including several groups not previously known to glow. The researchers also analyzed the animals’ DNA to look for the genes that might be creating the luminescence.

Funny, id been told that same story of the newt in the kettle by my undergrad ecology professor in Virginia but with the culprit replaced by a Red Spotted Newt rather than a rough skinned salamander! I wonder if there's variations to the legend based on location, since the red spotted newt is a common species here but the rough skinned salamander isn't.

Rough-skinned newt (Taricha granulosa) in a cheap but effective newt trap! Collected in Washington, with permits for education purposes and released the same day!
