the more i think it over, the more i think the framework for understanding gender-as-material-forces that i have seen offered by intersex communities, societally imposed gender/SIG, is incredibly relevant to all of us and should be adopted more.

societally-imposed gender is not a single factor, or based on a single factor. it is the outcome of multiple intersecting factors, none of which can be cleanly "mathed" out to predict any given person's positionality. it is contextual, and inherently arbitrary, because it is a description of an arbitrary, oppressive social force.

societally-imposed manhood and societally-imposed womanhood (which i suppose you could shorten to SIM/SIW, if you're feeling snappy and like acronyms) are not mutually exclusive, and the very nature of SIG is that it's possible to experience multiple forms of it in different contexts. presentation choices, medical history, gender assignment by the state and medical institutions, etc, all go into enforcing SIG on someone, but none of them map 1:1 to what gender is societally imposed on you. you must consider someone's full context, all variables involved, to understand how and why society is imposing a particular gender on them, and you can't really "work backwards" starting from a SIG and derive those factors without any other information.

furthermore, SIG is malleable, and can be influenced intentionally. "passing" is the process of manipulating aspects of your presentation and physical body in order to influence which gender society imposes on you. cis and trans people do this equally, by the way, which is an important part of this framework in my view. there is no inherent difference between a cis person attempting to influence their SIG and a trans person doing so, just a different relationship to the process due to social factors.

the most important utility of this term, in my opinion, is to phase out clumsy and awkward attempts at classifying experiences of gendered violence such as categorizing everyone into "male-aligned" or "female-aligned" based on experience of misogyny, or the use of AGAB language to describe categories of people outside of the specific context of birth certificates. all of these attempts have been crudely intersexist and make sweeping generalizations about gender-as-a-material-force that just straight up do not apply to sex-variant people broadly, whether perisex or intersex. genderqueer people of all types, particularly surgically and/or hormonally transitioning genderqueer people, have been caught up in the violence associated with these terms as well as intersex people.

no framework is perfect, naturally, but SIG offers a flexible, compassionate framework for understanding gendered violence, which empowers individuals to self-describe how gendered material forces affect them in different contexts, without making sweeping generalizations, misgendering themselves, or reinforcing constructs like the sex binary through our language. that's a pretty big step up from what the mainstream discussion has looked like so far.
