Conclusion
In my research of 2-Dimensional computer generated and telescopic images of of universe to 3-Dimensional jewellery, did not start of as a hypothesis for my thesis.
My research question was how can I interpret telescopic and computer generated images of the universe to jewellery. In the beginning I was going to use products like glow powder, mica powder, stone dust (crushed stone), CA glue and resin. I was going to use these products to show the deep space effect on my jewellery. I based my research on that.
Every jewellery design I had designed I took into consideration these products. Designing became tedious and I was limited to what I could design. After some time I realised that the pictures I see of deep are 2-Dimensional and on the other hand the jewellery is 3-Dimensional. This where the research question changed; it changed to interpreting 2-Dimensional  telescopic and computer generated images of the universe to 3-Dimensional jewellery. Surprisingly, everything puzzled together and my research was making sense to my designs and manufacture. With the help of other jewellers on Klimt02 I was able to design and manufacture 3-Dimensional jewellery.
In conclusion, my first hypothesis proved to be unsuccessful. The reason for that was, because my research question was wrong. Secondly, my approach to my research changed which led to a new hypothesis, ‘ interpreting 2-Dimensional telescopic and computer generated images of deep space to 3-Dimensional jewellery’. Thirdly, my designs were too simple, which meant that they were not suitable to be distilled and mass produced .Lastly, the designs I had were jewellery designs that already exist, and this made my practical work ‘conventional’. It was not unique or worth of doing a dissertation about.
My new dissertation to a study of 2-Dimensional images of deep space to 3-Dimensional jewellery proved to be successful. Firstly, it was successful by being able to gather data and distill that data to information that I could use to design and manufacture 3-Dimensional jewellery. Secondly, the information collected from other jeweller’s work online to incorporate it with jewellery inspired by 2-D images of the universe and interpret them to 3-D jewellery on my practical, proved to be correct. This is also because as jewellers we are used to thinking in 3-D. Thirdly, based on my second point, this enabled me to design and manufacture better as I was able to look back and reflect on other jewellers work while keeping it unique, 3-Dimensional and indigenous. Lastly, because my practical, design and manufacture, was unique my sufficient research enable me to refine my jewellery to simple designs suitable commercial purposes and mass production.

The space shuttle rings
Tumblr media
Image sourced from space.com
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The space shuttle rings are motivated by the design of the space shuttle. The first ring is organic while the second ring is geometric with distinct corners. This is quite different from my dissertation, but that does not mean that the space shuttle is any less important, because there is no going to space without the shuttle. Below is the link to an article about space shuttles.

Spiral arms ring
Tumblr media
Image sourced from @nasahubble on Instagram
Tumblr media
The spiral arms ring is a second jewellery piece that has been inspired by the Whirlpool galaxy. This ring is motivated by the extended spiral arms of the Whirlpool galaxy. At first I couldn't figure out how I can best show the Whirlpool shape on a ring design. After putting pen to paper I realised that the arms of the galaxy can be the centre of attention of the ring. Adding a stone in the centre made the Spiral arms ring a complete Whirlpool galaxy in your finger.
Here is a short video about the Whirlpool galaxy.

The ? Ring

When you look at the image of the interacting galaxies on top, you may see a question mark or a rose. I was intrigued by the shape of these interacting galaxies. I wanted to keep the shape of the jewellery similar to the colliding galaxies.  The interacting galaxies are collectively called Arp 194. The video below explains a bit more about the Arp 194 galaxy

The neutron star ring
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The neutron star above was discovered in May 2018 by astronomers, and it is the first special neutron star outside the Milky Way. Neutron stars are formed when a massive star runs out of fuel and collapses . If you would like to know more how neutron stars form you can use the link below.

I like the purple and the red hues of the star, which is what inspired the colours of the stones and shape of the ring.

The Block hole ring
Tumblr media
Image from Instagram @the.astronomy.daily
Tumblr media
The Block hole is one part of the universe I couldn’t wait to make jewellery about. I am fascinated by it and how it functions. The black hole ring is strictly how I interpret and see the Black hole. The shape and size of the ring reveals this. You can read more briefly about the Black hole in this article https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/k-4/stories/nasa-knows/what-is-a-black-hole-k4.html .

The Oumuamua rings
Tumblr media
Image from European Southern Observatory/M.kornmesser
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I named these two rings after the asteroid ‘Oumuamua’ (Hawaiian), which means messenger from afar arriving first. The Oumuamua interstellar is an elongated object and I wanted to show the shape and elongation on my jewellery pieces. The interstellar asteroid is about 400 meters long  .The inspiration came after reading an article about the asteroid. link to the article https://www.sciencealert.com/interstellar-visitor-oumuamua-asteroid-comet-non-gravitational-trajectory .
If you prefer watching a video than reading, you can watch the 3 minute video below about the Oumuamua interstellar asteroid.

Spiral earrings
Tumblr media
Image @nasahubble on Instagram
Tumblr media
I was browsing through my Instagram when I saw this image @nasahubble. It is a Whirlpool Galaxy with mesmerizing spiral arms, which caught my eyes. I thought the best way to translate the Whirlpool Galaxy was by making a pair of earrings. This allowed me to emphasize the spiral arms, which is what caught my attention in the first place.

The Milkomeda ring
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The name Milkomeda comes from the  Milky way and Andromeda galaxies when they have interacted or collided. That is when the Milky way collides with Andromeda. I watched a video on YouTube titled ‘What If the Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxies Collided? ‘. Immediately after watching the video I knew that I had to make something that will show the two galaxies in action. I paused the video halfway and took a screenshot of the 1st image on top .This is where the inspiration took off. Without designing I started forging and bending metal (which is something I haven’t done in a long time), but I knew that I would like keep the spiral and yellow colour shown in the image. The two yellow stones are Citrines.
The 3 minute video below, which is what inspired my Milkomeda ring,  shows what would happen if the Milky way and Andromeda galaxies collided.

The shooting star brooch
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The design of the shooting star brooch was influenced by the two pictures above. I call it the shooting star because it reminds me of a shooting star every-time I glance at it. The stone on the brooch represents a star as it fades away. Picture 1 (from the top) was accessed from an Instagram page called @the.astronomy.daily . It is actually an image of a rocket launch in Japan. The second picture (middle) is an image of Cat’s eye halo which is a planetary nebula. When I first saw the halo of the Cat’s eye nebula I thought of wire in a round shape form on top of each other, hence why the use of wire to mimic the halo .To read more in detail about the halo of the Cat’s eye nebula you can go to @astronomypicturesdaily on Instagram or use the link https://www.instagram.com/p/BpKC8WRl4y6/?taken-by=astronomypicturesdaily . In my design I combined the pic of the launching rocket and the Cat’s eye nebula halo. To see the design and manufacture process of the shooting star brooch you can go to my Instagram page @wk6jewellery.
